Hi, is it possible to put 34/36 chainring from XT/SLX to deore 1x12 crankset? They use the same direct mount but Shimano site states "deore chainrings only to deore crank" etc. However it shouldn't really matter.

Thx for the explanation, this is something that you will just have to experiment with and probably end up with a few redundant parts, but you can always sell them, till you get it correct for your particular bike. I think it's fine to mix and match parts to get the chain line 'centered' in relation to the cassette and to have the chainring and crank arms clear the frame.

Thanks for the explainer. I’m not sure I understand why the hub spacing has any affect on the clearance on the chainring and chainstay though. Wouldn’t that clearance be totally dependent on the tire clearance the frame was intended for as well as things like how thick the tubing is? I get that the hub spacing affects the chain line in the sense that you want the chainring centered on the cassette and that will change with hub spacing though.

Thanks for the video. I thought 52mm chain line was for 148mm boost (not 55mm). I got the M7100 crank for my bike (boost rear end). Should I have got the M7120?

Shimano lists both m7100 (52mm) and m7120 (55mm) for "boost". I suppose it really depends on your frame clearance. Shorter chain stays and wider tires keep pushing the chain lines further out.

I dont fully understand it. I actually use a shimano xt boost crank, which means 121mm with two spacers. So if I would buy a 115mm the crankarms and the chainring would be to close to the frame of the bike ? Am I correct? Because If so I just learned something from your nice video. Thanks

Thanks for that super informative video! Luckily I got the M7100 for my 2008 SLX upgrade. I still have some issues with the chain line that I need to understand… 🤯 as now, the chain runs straight when it’s on the 4th smalles gear on the cassette which I assume shouldn’t be the case 🤔

Hi Mate, so basically if I want to get SLX 1x12 for my Nukeproof Scout V3 Boost. I need to pick the M7120, but the chainline with that is 55mm instead of 52mm. So I will need a 3mm offset chainring to get the chainline right?.

Bike manuf said my bike is 52mm CL. The 510 crank Q is 177. If 7100 is 52 not only am i tight on frame my W is down 6mm. Is 7120 52/55 as opposed to 55 only? Thx. -U10

Hi sir what model could you recommend for me my bike is a non boost frame and Im using a 104 bcd crank so when I install a chainring I can only fit a 38t oval inside so the chain is aligned and 42t outside now here’s the problem if i buy the m7100 Im worrying if the only chairing I can get is below 38t but if i buy the m7120 the spindle is too long or the spacers can do it fine but when I buy my bike before it using a squre tapered bb and a 3x setup so Im thinking that the m7120 can do it just fine ny bike is a cannondale trail 7 2014

Yes the M7100 chainset works fine with a 11 speed cassette, you will need to use the 11 speed chain.

No, left crankarm is the same but you need spacers : the M7120 axle is 6mm longer than M7100 ; therefore one spacer of 3mm on the left and one on the right side

@Danny van Veldhoven Yes, assuming we talk about single chainring configuration, with FC-M8120 (or m7120) you have to install a special Shimano 3mm spacers on both side to get 55mm chainline , cause the axle is 6mm longer ; with M8100(or m7100) you have 52mm chainline without spacers. Both are for Boost frames . Maybe some frames are designed to accomodate larger tires , so someone invented 55mm chainline option to avoid larger chainstays . I see the Trek Supercaliber XT specs (i think 2022 model) : i read Shimano M8100 crank with 52mm chainline. Max tire size 2.20"
