I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

Love that bank Landing technique Tim :-)... I do the same, early release, tree and clear that lure and rod out of your way just in case you have to dive in after that fish lmao. Super, super low profile, solid 1 piece frame, 95mm power handle with the lew's Winn Grip round knobs. I felt like I got a better reel with the Lew's. Time will tell on how it holds up I assume! What’s your take on the one on this reel and which of the previous two reels is it more similar to?
@tacticalbassin6 жыл бұрын
The metanium and Curado K have the adjustment in almost the same place. This adjustment is on the side plate like the chronarch MGL. To me it is easier to see and adjust.

I’ve been trying 13 Fishing reels beside my Shimanos and Abu Revos and I’m truly impressed. I kept my distance because of the generic sounding name and that was a mistake. What are they doing that gives them that special feel when casting and retrieving? It’s like they are a completely different machine to what I’m used to. To be honest, even their $100 reels will either cast with or out cast my others. To me the only question is longevity. I guess I’ll find out, but if anyone wants a cheaper reel that rivals much more expensive reels, give those 13 Fishing Origin reels a try. Their Concept A, C and E are excellent. I bought the new Concept Z3 to go with my swimbait reels and I can’t put it down.

Hey Tim, You mentioned it has the feel of a “high-end round reel”. Any experience with a 100/200 Calcutta Conquest and how the Bantam compares? I know the Conquest retails for almost $200 more but it is about 4 years old. Which would be a better buy if you could get either reel for the same price for comparisons sake. BTW, love the vids but you and Matt have cost me a lot of money this offseason lol.
@tacticalbassin6 жыл бұрын
I do have the conquest and they feel alike. It depends what your primary purpose is for the reel. If your thinking swimbaits id go with the conquest, anything else I personally like the low profile reels.
@cy_yakfishing33586 жыл бұрын
TacticalBassin Thanks for the input! Haven’t gotten into big swimbait fishing yet, the Conquest seems to be a popular reel for that. I’d be looking to throw smaller moving baits: squarebills, lipless cranks, swim jigs, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, etc. I think I’ll give the Conquest a try for those purposes. I’m sure I’ll end up with a Bantam in a higher gear ratio somewhere down the line.

So if I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the metanium should I get this instead or is the metanium still in a different class?

I think that they are for different market segment. But if you are thinking of the metanium, u should really consider looking at the chronarch to save some money. I have both the metanium and chronarch and I would say there's not a whole lot of reason to go metanium other than that aesthetic.
@kylekooda13546 жыл бұрын
Fong Vang yeah I have the new cronarch on my shaky head rod and like it for bottom contact baits but from what I've heard the metanium shines with moving baits. I throw a lot of chatter baits, big spinner baits, and smaller A-rigs that I'd use the metanium for
@fongvang9356 жыл бұрын

I don't know why Shimano has to put such a short handle on the reel. At 84mm it is frustrating short whereby 90mm is basically the minimum standard these days. To begin with, this reel isn't exactly cheap in the first place at $350 a pop, once you add on an aftermarket handle, you are easily talking about $420 already which is Metanium MGL money. Having said that, the Metanium MGL also comes with a 84mm handle apart from the XG. I think is Shimano's strategy in order to be able to market the reel at a lighter weight. Imagine if you put a longer handle on the Bantam? It is already 7.8oz as it is, it will definitely break the 8oz mark.

Never owned one but my brother got one to try. It will cast good 2 times and backlash the next 4. I’ve been giving the 13 Fishing Concept reels a go. I even like their cheap reels for backups. They were a surprise to me after staying away from that generic sounding name for so long. If they will last, I’ll buy more and even the Concept TXZ, one of their nicest. Just don’t care much about the colors, but I just won’t look at Th em while fishing with the way they cast. Some of the smoothest I’ve ever picked up
@Rascallucci6 жыл бұрын
One of the issues of the Bantam or essentially the bulk of Shimano's high-end line-up of reels is the fact that they still come in stock with a ridiculously short 84mm handle. Why is that? In this day and age, 90mm is today's norm and even then I sometimes further upgrade to 100mm. While 90mm is acceptable, 84mm is literally unfishable. Is just horrible. Now, let's look at how many Shimano's high end reels are affected, it includes the Antares, Antares DC, Conquest, Conquest DC, Metanium MGL, Metanium DC and now the Bantam MGL. I don't know about you, that is a problem and I will tell you why. These mentioned reels as they stand are already expensive enough, could you imagine having to further invest on an aftermarket 90mm or 100mm handle on top of that? Take the Metanium MGL for example, the reel already costs $420, adding a handle can easily drive that total amount to $500+ which is insane in my opinion. We are not talking about a cosmetics upgrade here, we are talking about a very necessary upgrade based on an unreasonably short 84mm stock handle. In my opinion, I think that will deter some from buying the reels. If I was in the market for a mid market Shimano baitcaster, I would probably pick the Chronarch MGL instead which by the way comes with a 90mm handle. Or may be I would have been prepared to spend more than $280 on a Chronarch, say even up to $350 for a Bantam MGL for example, but certainly not when you take into account of a $100 aftermarket handle on top.
@jeffreylenz73145 жыл бұрын
Alex. If you buy the Jdm version you would save over a 100 dollars and that wil cover your 100m handle. Problem solved

I (Tim) have both so since you're asking my opinion here it is. I really love my Gen 1 revos. Ive raved about them in a lot of past videos and they still work great today. I have the 3rd and 4th gen Stx and Premier and choose to use Chronarch. So far this Bantam MGL seems like a stronger Chronarch.

Maybe it's just me? but smaller reels for smaller fish and presentations and bigger reels for bigger fish and presentations? Sure they may work for the occasional hog, but if you are in an area where hogs are common do you really want to go too small?

Man, my experience with these high end reels from the Calais to the Metanium to this is Bantam. They are worth the money. However for about 90% of the people these our out of the question financially. Its like a high end sports car, They are a blast to drive and serve their purpose but a ford fusion can get you to work too.lol

Yep! We totally agree! This was a highly requested video but we included our favorite reels at at various (cheaper) price points in the video description.

For everyone complaining about the price of these reels, budget for them. Set aside $20-30/month and wait till Black Friday or Christmas and buy one. Plus, it will last you a looong time. Quality tools last if you take care of them.

So I watched the video and i was thinking , wow , that seems like a pretty cool reel, maybe I'll grab one. I then went to Tackle Warehouse and read that they were $349.00 each!! No that does not include the rod , that's the price of the reel. I literally almost fell out of my chair. For those of you lucky enough to be able to afford a $349 reel , good for you, that's fantastic. For me, that's way waaaay beyond my budget, I spend that amount on three reels so and usually have enough left over for Chick Filet, but it is is pretty to look at which is about as close as i am able to get.

We hear you! Open up the video description and you'll find that we showed the price but also understand your concern and linked a handful of other reels we really like at their prospective price points. Each one is a good deal at its price.

If you need that much braking control to throw a weightless senko then it’s too much reel for you lol

I don't understand the breaking system I don't want to spend alot of money and just back lash the snot out of it
@tacticalbassin6 жыл бұрын
This reel has an internal breaking system where you can turn brakes off or on. In this video I turned 1 off. There is another "Easy to adjust" braking system on the side of the reel. Its the wheel on the side that is numbered 1-6....6 being the most resistant.

Haha man 350 bucks for a reel is pretty high end in my book...

I'm just watching this video and am seriously considering getting the bantam MGL. Only concern is that I don't want to get it and then half a year later the new one comes out. When do you think this reel will be renewed?
