G’day Dennis I’m the guy who asked you to do a video on the Calcutta 400B, many thanks for this as usual your video is spot on and I feel confident to tackle my reel. Absolutely agree patience and a sense of humour are essential not only with fishing gear but life in general. Again thank you. Cheers Iain

Thanks for the video. I needed it to take off the cover for the level wind mechanism. I wasn't sure which screws held the cover on. BTW there's a hole in the frame so you can put your screwdriver straight on the larger of the three screws for that side cover. I put in new SPOOL ceramic bearings and now the reel is better than new. The bearing dealer said don't oil ceramic bearings.
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
Thanks - yes - you can run the ceramic bearings dry. Some come sealed and oiled and need no service at all - Dennis

Very popular reel over time! I'm not much a fan of shimanos new saltwater stuff, outside of the Tranx, but the Calcutta is a classic. Guys love the thumb bar for jigging and as you showed it's pretty simple in design! Sometimes classic designs done very well live forever. Like the original Daiwa BG or the Penn Baja special for the west coast guys.

A small amount of reel grease on tip of the screwdriver makes it possible to stick the small screw on it. The tackiness of the grease will help hold the screw, and make it easier to position it in a vertical plane. Thanks for posting.

Great vids, they’ve helped me a lot with servicing my ambassador and Calcutta reels. Many thanks! So a question for you. What grease do you prefer for a marine environment? I was using Superlube but found it gummed up too quickly. A friend recommended Clenzoil (firearm oil) saying it won’t break down as quickly, and I’ve found it works pretty well. But I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a better option than either of those. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks for the video I will use this as reference to perform service on my shimano calcutta 50, 200dc and 400. I have questions about Daiwa tatula 200 hs. The reel is making an awful noise while casting im not sure whats wrong. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix the problem. Thanks
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
That is hare to diagnose from your note, but if it is only happening during casting, then it is probably the spool bearings or the line guide and worm gear mechanism that need lubrication - Dennis

Good idea to put a little steal wire through those bearings and do a small twist that way if the fall or anything like that they won’t get mixed up on you.

Was reading on some forums thtvs9me don't like the d because you have to take the plate off by the handle to adjust the brakes. Is that the spool brakes or which? Thanks in advance
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
It would seem to mean spool brakes, but I don't think this spool has them, so I believe they are referring to the drag washers - Dennis

Question. I’m not trying to look for problems but I think my c3 abu Garcia may have a drag issue. I setup the reel on a rod with 20 pound test line and put it at 45 degrees in a rod holder.. I got a digital scale and tied the string to it. I set my drag super loose and pulled on it. Set it a little tighter and pulled again etc. I was trying for about 5-6 pounds of force. I did get to 5 and a half pounds on the scale before the drag let line out, but I had to set that star drag super, SUPER tight to get it. This reel is supposed to have a max drag of 14 pounds. I have to be at or near max, I couldn’t physically tighten that star much more at all without breaking it. I’m nowhere near 14 pounds. Does this indicate a problem with my drag system? Does the rod make the actual number at the scale different than it should be somehow? The drag did pull pretty smoothly and was quiet. Thanks for any help.
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have worn drag washers that would need to be replaced in order to increase the drag pressure. If they aren't worn, there could be debris on the drag washers surface that is impeding the performance. Either way, sounds like they need to be serviced - Dennis

hi good night my friend Dennis how are you !!! Dennis I have a little problem, I took my Calcutta 400 apart ok! But I don't remember if the copper washers put them before the clips! Can you help me Dennis ???
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
I am unsure of the washers you are asking about, but I think you mean the ones under the star drag adjuster? The sequence from the main gear out is: Gear sleeve, two tension washers with the holes that fit the shaft exactly, then the washers you are asking about??? then the star adjuster. If you mean different washers, please let me know what part of the assembly you are working on. Be well - Dennis
