This guys video really wasn’t the greatest, but he is clearly a very patient and humble person. Read his replies to people’s really mean comments. I’m really impressed and I’m subbing for that very reason. Also I changed my thumbs down to thumbs up. Godspeed sir✊✊

Hi i have just bought some good condition deore pods deore 590s my bike currently has the newer alivio 4000 which one is broke my question is are the deore better shifters?
@mtbboy19932 жыл бұрын
I've not tried Alivio 4000. M490 worked well, even in in winter the change to lower subzero temps did not crack the plastic. The plastic on the triggers was strong, resistant to temp rapid changes, low temps, - 10c was not an issue. But acera M360 cracked. I hav epics of all of it on flickr. But I sold both.

I am done with mechanical shifters as they don't fit me. Atleast anyone I've tried or seen so far, but not tried the new Shimano 12 speed shifter. But I suspect they won't fit me. M590 did not have i stand release, you had to let off the trigger to shift. Newer and higher in the range they have that feature, atleast XT m8000 and XTR m9000 did. Those were robust, also withstood taking the bike out from room temp to - 10c. I smashed and scraped the carbon trigger on some rock slab somehwere I think, and it survived that, the carbon reinforced up shift trigger also did well, the xt has alu downshift trigger and plastic up shift, but it's the strong kind of plastic. But I had to sell them due to ergonomics not working for me. I use Archer D1xtrail now, electronic shifting but with regular rear derailleur. Works well, great ergonomics with the paddle remote. But for some reason one shifter had dead motor after few months, first unit gave out few weeks ago. But I got it fixe sunder warranty, so will do that again. But I have issue swith my thumb misalihning during shifts so that was one of the reasons I gave up on mechanical shifters, if it happens it hurts, but with electronic shifting it does not hurt as there is barely any pressure. So I don't get fatigued.

In what sense these are better than lower series shifter? Do they have metal case or more durable parts inside?
@mtbboy19938 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean. I never stated these are better than anything. For some reason my worst vids are the most popular. This is a old Deore shifter mechanism has metal, but Cover is plastic so is triggers. Also dotn use lube, use grease, I did ran out of grease.

@@mtbboy1993 I didn't mean to criticize your video. I am just asking because you have experience.
@mtbboy19938 ай бұрын
This is Deore so not pticiest, I don't remember much about the shifters from that year. Haven't looked inside them all. But old ones all had plastic. The ratchet mechanism was steel, and indicator were plastic. Album: www.flickr.com/gp/mtbboy1993/7NkiS5qA58 I liked the light trigger action, bit down and up shift, same with m6100 the 10 speed Deore, but did not like it did not have instant release which XT and XTR models had. But XT M8000 and XTR M9000 had firmer action as there was kind of a bump in the stroke. Maybe to prevent accidental shifts. But ergonomics and too long downshift throw was too much for me. No matter how I positioned it one of the triggers would bother me. Also would hit and rub my thumb on the lock on clamp on the grips. I've not tried the current Shimano shifters, but there's a 8nsoeed coming with shorter lever throw. I don't know if the XT and XTR shifters has that. Not sure about ergonomics on those. But I suspect they won't fit me well. For ergonomics and no fatigue and pain I use Archer d1xtrail paddle remote, suoebrlighy action, it's electronic wireless, controls a box mounted ont he chainstay pulling wire on a mechanical derailleur it works with any rear derailleur, can set speed, and it calibrates the wire at every start up. I hav issues with thumbs misaligning which can cause pain if it happens during a shift on a mechanical shifter, but with this system this is not a problem.

This inspired me to just hold the opened shifter under the hot water tap, with a little bit soap, then letting it dry and oiling it.
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
best to use grease not oil, as oil will leak out. I later used Sram butter.
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
soap is a good idea, and a stiff brush, that should probably clean most of it out. what I did here was not perfect. but can't reshoot this as I sold it.

@@mtbboy1993 I understand, but I don't want to risk hardening of grease blocking up the little latch again, especially in the winter.

@@rogerlahaye1948A thin grease like slickoleum shouldn't have this problem. That's what I plan to use when I service mine soon

Hi what's the lube you used
@mtbboy19933 жыл бұрын
Weldtite Wet Extreme, but I can't recommend using a lube, you should use a grease, I just used what I had at the time, the video was more to shoe how to take it apart, I knew using a lube was wrong, but this video is old, I did not use a proper editing software, and did not have a mic, so no voice over, but I recommend to use a light grease, Shimano has Shimano branded grease for shifters and gear wire, cables, but what I used later instead of the lube wad Sram butter. But as I've sold all my shifters I can't remake the video and do it properly. But if I kept them I would have redone it properly. I now use electronic system, Archer D1xtrail. Cus it eliminates fatigue and fits me better than the shifters I've tried and have seen.

Can I use WD 40?
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
NO, AND Don't even use the oil I used, I reccomend to use Sram butter, Slick honey, Slickoleum or similar grease.
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
To blast the old stuff out yes, as a quick fix yes, you should have proper grease there.
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
But WD40 has a bike maintenance line. www.wd40.com/ they have degreasers, lubes, but they don't have any grease.

What kind of Oil is that red one?
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
It's Weldtite wet Extreme but don't use it use Sram butter/Slick honey instead. Cus using oil will make it leak. Same with spray lubes. This is a old video, I just wanted to show how to take this thing apart, so ignore the lubrication choice.
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
This lube works better for lubing chain for winter, extreme wet, conditions, but also works nicely for ratchet hubs, I use it on Hope pro4, but on shifter rit will leak on the hub it won't.
@studio-84 жыл бұрын
So what is best choice? Still lubricant won't fill small gaps. Liquid will but there is mix of plastic and metal parts in this shifter. Silicon or just waseline oil? (used in precision mechanisms)
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
@@studio-8 I reccomend grease, sram butter for example is very slippery, thin, but still a grease, its made for suspension lubrication, and used in dropper posts too, works nicely on hubs too.
@mtbboy19934 жыл бұрын
@@studio-8 drivetrain lubes or silicone spray won't damage it, but not the best for this application. But be careful with using wrong cleaning sprays, some can damage some rubber or plastic I guess, so best to use the known choices.

This hurt to watch! I thought he was going to use as much oil on it as he did cleaner! And use a real screw driver, that tool is for our on the bike, not in the shop!

I know, this is what I had on hand. Whole vid sucks, but I keep it up as it shoes the disassembly. But I sold the shifter. I wanted to redo this video, forgot to , but then I sold it. So can't redo it properly. I did not even us eptoper editing software then. For some reason my most watched videos are my worst. 🤔 I reccomend to use suspension grease instead of oil, this was before I found that. If I ever do wrenching vi's in the future they would be better, now I even have a tripod, edit in Resolve. 👌
