Shimano Reel Maintenance | A to Z

Shimano Reel Maintenance 101 is part of being a good angler and I've been slacking on it. (Video Table of CONTENT Below!) In this video my friend Kerry teaches us how to do basic reel maintenance as we service my Shimano Chronarch 200E7. (Cleaning shimano Chronarch 200E7) We used one of my reels but the info in this video can be used to service any baitcaster. Thank you to you and your friend for the video. I've been fishing since age 3. I started throwing a baitcaster at 11. I've grown up on Abu Garcia 5000 & 5500's. Now, with the Curado and Orro in possession, I've been intimidated at taking them apart. Your friend was extremely thorough and gave me a renewed confidence as well as some great tips and instruction. I have always used the Quantum Hot Sauce and Reel Lube (that one comes with a needle applicator as well) but, it was also good to see that there are some other products out there that I may need to look at. I loved his tip about using the finishing nail punch as well as using the flathead to break the lock on a screw before using the phillips. Thanks so much for helping those of us out there that haven't gotten to that level of maintenance yet!

Not bad! Pretty good job on the cleaning and re-lubing. It's nice to see someone who knows what he's doing and has some insight about how to maintain a reel according to proper mechanical insight.

Very important to clean them after salt water.....I usually clean and lubricate my reels after every trip to ensure it always performs great! As always nice vid Roman!🤙

This has really helped me. While watching and rewinding the video occasionally I just cleaned up a Shimano Curado 200PG. It is about a mid range reel but the back story was that my son who lives up in the Northern Territory of Australia in East Arnhem Land was helicopter fishing and they landed by a secluded creek. On the bank of the creek he found a broken rod with the Curado 200PG. No idea how long it had been there but was in reasonable condition with some sand and rubbish in various areas of the internals. It was fully spooled and the braid is in very good condition. What happened to the owner? Well no one was missing in the area and no big crocs were seen hanging around. The spool release button was not working until I cleaned it out and greased that area of the reel. I think the thumb cast release seized and the owner threw it away in disgust. Issue probably from not servicing the reel adequately or not at all. Now I have a new overhead to tackle some Northern Territory barramundi. Cool!

Wow Colin! That's a great story. Australia sounds WILD. It's something else when Crocs are a real factor when considering what might have happened to someone fishing from the bank.

Hi Charles, I'll let Kerry know. He doesn't yet. We will be working on more reel maintenence, repair, and upgrade series for this channel. no I have a similar one. I have an number of reels- spinning and casting-so either video is good. Of all of the gears and parts on a reel that seems to need cleaning the most is the worm gear assembly-which Kerry said he uses a little oil- but I did not see him take it apart to do any cleaning -why would that be.

I can’t seem to take out the drive shaft on my chronarch 200e6. Kerry took it off with ease, and I wiggle and pull with no avail. Would he have an idea on how to get it out?

The spool is part of the drive shaft so maybe try using it to pull it out. Hold it by the spool to push it out the opening when the side plate is open. I hope that helps. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

HI +Conreale, Sorry the video didn't help you. It was a long video maybe I can clarify it for you here. What's the question? Might have been laying out the parts in assembly order then moving them while putting it together and forgetting the order.

This got me too, in fact, exactly why I looked this video up. That square drag nut had a washer that stuck to one side, and on one side, it had a round area around the shaft hole that had been milled out. Upon reassembly, I wasn't sure which side the washer went on, and which direction the milled side should face. The video wasn't super clear about that, but I think I guessed correctly lol.
