Some tips I've learned: - You can insert the two springs and the tensioner bolt and thread the axle through those - A screwdriver helps to push the jaw away when installing the cover plate - Check the bearing surfaces for pitting or play before regreasing

Thanks I just upgraded 4 of my bikes to Shimano XTR PD-M9100's. This video really helped mainly because Shimano spring tensions are horribly unreliable matching pedal to pedal. With the tension screw all the way down on both new r/l pedals, then using a little little crescent wrench to measure the tension on either side maybe even 3 to 5 clicks tighter than on the other side. Or one pedal both sides very much tighter than the matching pedal. The only good fix for this is loosening the over tight springs by bending them because you can't just tighten up the other side or pedal for all to match or you get a pedal that with springs with too much preload. Hense, on every set (still after all these years) of XTRs' (amazingly almost never have to do on XT level), I have to do the loosening procedure. So this video helps when I have a spring that slips past the pressure plate in my procedure and have to take it apart to rebuild. Btw, not old cleats cause remember, i am measuring the tensions by hand not just with the cleat popping out. I kinda with with all the work this has been would just have gone with the Xt8000's, but the 9100's slightly wider pedal body is work it with thousands of revolutions a year.

It's good you went for the m9100, the m9000's bearings can be dodgy, I'm on my second axle on the rh side and it's a common issue, I've been servicing SPD's since my first pair in 1990, to sickbikers level of strip, m9000's have the most unreliable bearings of all SPD's.... Warn your friends! 😂

I accidentally bought Eggbeater Titanium Axle for my Shimano M540 SPD pedal, after seeing your detailed video instructions, I was able to install the titanium axle with a washer. It had different end-screw, instead of 8mm hex nut, it had 4mm allen bolt at the end, and only required a washer to do the same trick. So I added aluminum one for extra 1g, lol! Thanks for the video, otherwise I wouldn't bother opening and just would've sold my M540. Great service! Viva la SickBiker!

@@cannondany Yeh and the M540 I assume. I used your video to put together my M520 I had pulled apart without taking pictures like I usually do. Was struggling with how to put the springs back on and consequently the adjuster back in. This video saved me. You might consider adding M540 and M520 into the title? Coincidently the spindle on the M545 is actually the same, so the M520 can be "upgraded" to something more solid (albeit 7g heavier per spindle) if you want to sacrifice the M545 (I had a broken pair).

This is very useful. I always serviced Shimano pedals by unscrewing the body from axle, wiping axle, wiping inside the body, then filling the body with new grease and screwing it back on the axle. This pushes out the dirty old grease through the bearings and the seal using new grease, you need to push the seal back in afterwards for this pedal, or not, since it is probably going to come out again anyway. If grease coming out is still dirty, I'd unscrew the body and fill it with new grease again, and repeat until only clean grease is coming out. It's probably not the best way and adds resistance from having the pedal completely full of grease, but it was quick to do, so I could do it more often. But I had the 8mm bearing race just crack and fail on one of my pedals after about 5 years, can't find just that part, so getting new axle assembly.

Isn't all that maintenance kind of useless if you don't replace those broken rubber seals that keep all the mud and sand out of the pedal body? I mean they might be better for a while until the sand particles and moisture work its way pass that broken seal again. Also do you know what those seals and bearings do cost if you replace them? Is the replacing them wise to do or is the price so high that its almost cheaper to buy new pedals?

@@brethoekstra9001 You can get spare complete axles but it still isn't cost efficient. Agree with your comment re poor quality seal. After my first ride with these pedals, the seal had migrated inward with a lot of grease egress. Love that you service these. Why on earth are replacement parts not easily available. I found your video after a rock strike broke off the cleat retaining clip. I can’t find a replacement anywhere as yet. Yes I can afford to replace, but it seems such a waste when we should be recycling / re-using and repairing.

You are correct. That seal is pathetic and it is not readily available as far as I can tell. It is the same seal my $55 shimano pedal use and does a poor job at sealing. This is a poor offering for a company like shimano on a premium pedal. Spare parts should be available at a minimum. My pedals had 12 + 12 ball bearings.

If you want to use Shimano cleats with all your bikes your only option is to have XTR if you want lightest pedals they offer. Like I have same cleats for my Enduro, XC and Trekking bikes so I can use the same shoes for all of them but having Wider XTR on Enduro, those smaller XTR in XC and clipless on one side and flat on the other in my trekking bike in case I want to go with normal shoes some time too. In my opinion Shimano has covered all the cycling types very well and you can get spare parts to those from almost any bike shop around the world so I kind of don't see a point to have anything else unless you do only racing and seeking the lightest option out there.

I used these pedals on my all-road bicycle. No trails, no rocks, nothing.. XTR and Dura Ace have 3 years warranty. 3 years and 2 months after buying them, one of the parts holding the cleat, the ones pushed by the springs, split in half while riding casually. The grain of the metal was pretty coarse, indicating poor material quality or a defect in the metal treatment. The store told me -literally- that things break, buy new ones. They didn't help me at all. Shimano didn't even bother to answer. They don't sell that spare, but you can take it from another Shimano pedal or buy the cheapest ones (520) for spares, they are exactly identical, it's a bit tricky to replace, but you don't need special tools, there's a video explaining the procedure on youtube. Shimano quality is not what it was, it's not only their infamous cranks... They don't adapt to new technologies and standards either. These pedals still use cone bearings! In 2023, just ridiculous. Once you get some dirt inside, the cones get scratched and the whole thing has to go in the bin. I recommend XPEDO CXR instead. They are cheaper, lighter, SPD compatible (you can use the same cleats if you rent a bicycle with shimano pedals) and they are more reliable. They also have 3 ball bearings on each pedal. Easier to service and if one gets damaged you just put a new one in and pedals will be like new. On top of that, you can use them to do the hack with Favero Assioma pedals.
