No laughs or cries. Just some praise - keep at it, you're doing a great job. As a fellow South Bend nut, I love to see people get into machining because of these great machines.

I am WAY late to the party, but I did the same thing to my 1925 SB 9 C. I found that going to the local auto parts store and buying a cheap set of feeler gauges makes for great shim stock.

Glad you made this video. I received an old Barnes #4 and have never done any bushings. At least I have an idea of how much play it can have.

good luck... I'm no expert at rebuilding lathes... this is my first one... but shimming the headstock was easier then I thought it would be...

I bought the 9a set off of eBay (rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5337979757&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FRebuild-Kit-for-9-South-Bend-Lathe-Model-A-New-%2F150497962557%3Fhash%3Ditem230a60aa3d%3Ag%3A2rYAAOSwV0RXq9RE)... it came with extra stuff but had everything I needed...

Just curious, how did reshimming the spindle work out for you? I have an old Atlas 10-D with the babbit style bearings. I removed a couple thousandths worth of shim and felt the spindle seemed kinda tight. So I put them back for now lol.

Can i use Extreme Pressure Grease instead of oil in those bushings?????

what color is your lathe? It looks really cool in my opinion. It looks 'blued' or blackened ........ I do see black paint which is chipped in places. I like it

thanks... I turned my first real work today... just a 1 1/4 rod turned down to fit in my 3/4 collet with a 1" turned end... going to make a saw arbor that fits in my r8 collet for my mill... now to mill a keyway and then thread an internal thread and make a couple of other small parts : facebook.com/groups/882142658553809/permalink/906554156112659/

Looks like a series R. Is your main thrust bearing a plain (not a ball thrust) bearing? Not talking about the fiber washer people always talk about replacing, I mean the bearing that takes forward thrust on the spindle.

Dave Gingery used aluminum foil for shim stock in his homemade lathes.

Skimmed your comments, didn't see anything about the washers under your bearing caps. Probably causal to this issue? In my head, lifting that bearing cap up off mating surface that far with washers probably contributed to this issue.
