Those water bottle/tripod/etc. drawstring pouches on the sides look like an incredible improvement. Question: I'm a fan of the concept of travelling with one backpack even if it's for weeks or months in a row -- any chance there was any "one bag" testing, as in travelling with one backpack and nothing else? For example, loading the X50 with a mirrorless ICU AND having enough room for clothing and everything else someone would bring with them when travelling, or with a mirrorless ICU, clothing and lightweight camping gear (if not the mirrorless ICU, perhaps the small ICU from Shimoda or from another brand). This all seems possible with the X70, but the size pushes the limit of carry-on compatibility; if it can be done with the X50, it'd reliably be brought on a plane... It'd be my dream backpack.
@ShimodaDesigns5 жыл бұрын
The X50 expands up to 57L, a mirrorless Core Unit is 10L - can you travel with one bag thats 47L? if so, you have your answer. It would be really subjective to say it could work for months - it all depends on your personal needs for your journey. I do travel for work with one pack often, but that usually just to the factory for a week at the most. I'm not backpacking around the globe... although this test maybe a good excuse to start ;)

Just ordered an x50 to replace my much loved atlas adventure. Very excited. I hear many amazing things about your bags, very well done. My question is to do with the roll top. This it to create a waterproof seal protecting the top section, however there’s a zip entrance to the same section, is this as watertight as the roll top.? Excited to use it when it arrives. Hi thanks the positive feedback. It is designed for bodies like the Sony A7 and smaller. A 5D will also snuggly fit. The Mirrorless Medium Core Unit is 28cm tall - so you max length needs to be shorter than that. It's a smaller bag made compact loads. You should look in to the bigger X50 or X70. - Ian

I do find all the Shimoda videos helpful, however I’m still finding it incredibly hard to decide between the x50 & x70. I keep flip-flopping between the two in my head! I’ve watched the separate x50 & x70 videos multiple times. I’ve watched numerous ‘what’s in my bag’ videos for both models too, along with lots of independent review videos. I can imagine that others are having equal difficultly deciding between the x30 & x50 too. Just thinking out loud here, but maybe it would be helpful to have an ‘x30 vs x50’ video, and a separate ‘x50 vs x70’ video, maybe showing typical photo/video kit that folk could take in each, while still leaving room for other essentials. Personally, I’m looking to buy with the thought of either one or two overnight stays away, maybe staying at friends / family, where I want photo gear, change of clothes, washing gear etc, but separately, I’m wanting to protect for potential of hiking / over night camping use too (with camera kit). There are things to like about both the x50 & x70. I like the size of the x50, for more general use, slightly lighter weight, more airline hand carry on friendly size & the side access opening. The negative (for me) is that once I put a camera body in, a couple of lenses, filters, a tripod or two, then in the top section put sleeping pad, quilt, stove & gas canister, 2L water bottle, food etc for an overnighter, then I think I’d probably run out of room for the tent & have to strap it to the outside. On the other hand, I much prefer the bigger deeper side pockets on the x70 (vs x50) for housing 2L water bottle, tripods, and potentially tent too, and the larger internals should comfortable handle all the other camping gear along with plenty of space for photo/video gear, but will I find it too big & too heavy? (rhetorical question). It’s all very well having a larger pack so you can pack the kitchen sink too....but if you can’t lift it, or walk for long with all that weight on your back, then what’s the point of having a larger pack in the first place!? I think, if the x50 had the same side pockets as the x70 - while still retaining the side access of the x50, that would have been the one I’ve have gone for. The side pockets on the x70 just look so much more substantial / useable to me, they look like they could pretty much swallow a 1-2 man tent - the top may still be sticking out, but it looks like a tent would be held much more securely & practically than strapping a tent to the top or bottom of the x50 and replying of the straps to hold it while hiking. Anyone else had/having trouble deciding between the x50 and it’s stable mates, either up or down size? Or am I alone in not knowing which way to go ;-)
@ShimodaDesigns3 жыл бұрын
If camping is on your list of needs, IMO you should go with the X70 - unless your a minimalist. the X70 is a just a few cm taller, deeper and wider than the X50 and the depth is compressible. Tents fit very good in the front pocket with out a stuff sack (of either bag). Depending on your tent and bag size, you may be able to pack them in the sides. At the end of the day, it's very hard to find one bag that does everything... in my opinion, buy what you need now and consider another pack for the more niche needs in the future. For my self there is no way I could exist with one pack... if I had too it might limit my hobbies and sculpt my choices in adventures. But based on your post and if just one bag... I would go X70. - Ian

@@ShimodaDesigns ....understood, you are trying to run a business there too, not just create online content for the likes of me ;-) I’m likely to buy imminently anyway, so way before such a video will be available. I just thought that it might be the sort of thing others that are struggling the x50 or x70, and by the same logic, x30 or x50, may appreciate being able to watch in future. I think the really tricky thing with these bags is that with the roll top, the bags can potentially expand and hold so much more, that maybe one can get away with an x50 and get the advantage of it being within most hand carry on rules, while still being able to carry cameras and over night camping kit when needed too. I’m sure others will be deliberating between the x30 & x50 too in a similar way.

Hello! I've spent the last week doing a ton of "onebag" travel backpack research, and am planning to back the kickstarter for an X50 in the next day or two, but there's one thing I haven't encountered in all of my ready and watching -- the opinion/experience of a non-photographer of the Shimoda bags. My partner and I are planning on doing a 3-month trip to Japan next year, and, being a cartoonist, I plan to capture my trip with pen and paper rather than a camera. Despite this, the various Shimoda bags seem to be have the the best combination of features (interior access, storage, weatherproofing, expandability, structure and support), and have landed at the top of my list. Still, I feel just a tad unseasy, having been unable to find even a single mention of someone using one of these bags sans core units. So my question is, have you had much feedback (or personal experience) using these bags without a camera or core unit? Does leaving the core unit out negatively impact the bag's structural integrity and "hike-ability"? unrelated bonus question: Is there anywhere on the bag where a patch could be sewn on without compromising the pack's weather-proofing? When initially considering the explore, I was excited to realize that the front-most fabric already had holes into it for loop-stowing which implied that it wasn't itself vital for weatherproofing. This system has been changed for the Action X series (which seems like a good move in in except for this superficial corner case XcP), but I was curious if there is any other part of the bag with a similar "fabric-facade?" Thanks for your time! - christopher
@ShimodaDesigns5 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher, thanks for considering our gear. The bags have the same reviews for comfort and carry with or without the camera specific mentions. They are ideal for both uses. The fact they are designed to be weighted with camera kit will be even better since you likely will not match that weight. I designed these bags (in Japan) and use them for more than just photography. Basically any day I need a pack, I am using one. It's definitely over looked but IMO these are as good as any day pack out there - if not better. The harness and its quick access phone and accessory pockets alone is enough reason to sport one around town. I do not suggest sewing patches as it compromises the weather proofing but if you are going to do it, the outside front pocket might be your best choice. The reality as long as the sewing of the patch is done well, it will keep the holes it creates somewhat filled. Regards Ian

Hi. Is there any chance of storing a 400mm f2.8 (Canon RF) in a x50 or is this option available only for x70 and DV core unit? XL DV core unit is great when it comes to deep but also X70 has its limitation when it comes to airflights. I take into consideration that 8/10 You will pass thought the gate, but 20% can happen. Also I know that I can take out the core unit and carry separate but will the handle of the cover not have any problems with the weight of around 12-14kg of gear?
@peterwaisnor2241 Жыл бұрын
For the X50, the Large DSLR v3 Core Unit interior measures 10.6W x 15.7H x 6.7D in, and the lens dimensions are 6.4 in x 14.4 in., so it should fit. Usually the limitation is the lens hood. A 3rd party lens hood like Zemlin offers will usually be smaller in diameter and allow the lens to fit in the Core Unit. You could compare the 15.7 x 6.7" Core Unit dim to your lens/hood combo. The single top webbing handle of the lightweight skin should not be used for 14 kg in weight, but there are two handles that can balance the weight.

@ShimodaDesigns5 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes you should be fine, but consider any heavy water pressure can make a negative difference. For example leaving it on the base of the boat in water- will increase the odds of weather penetration. But if you are referring to traveling from big boat to land via a Zodiac or just ripping around in relatively calm waters, you should be more than fine. People do that with all sorts of backpacks in Antarctica. ...Passing the drake via Zodiac... might be a bad idea ;)

Hello is there space behind the camera core to slid a gimbal in? I found this to be one of best places to store a gimbal in other packs. Since a hydration bladder would take up alot of the room on the rear large pocket. And most camera cores are not designed to fit the awkward shape of gimbals.
@ShimodaDesigns3 жыл бұрын
Only if you had a mirrorless Core Unit and small low profile/compact gimbal. One thing for sure is that it would a pain to access. I'd try a few different ideas... move your water to the side panel pouch (use a Nalgene or similar). Split your water between 2 bottles (my preferred choice) - one in the bag and one in the front shoulder strap pocket. Both ideas will free up the front pocket. The last is use the side panel pouch for the gimbal. While we make the bags bladder compatible, it's my opinion this way to pack water is the least effective. Even using 2 smaller Platypus bladder will free up more carry options and be more efficient IMO.

It really depends on the size of you tent and sleeping. My winter bag is 3x the size as my summer, my 2 man ultralight tent is half the size of my 3man ultralight... but I can say with confidence that the 40-60 rain cover is sized to accommodate a tripod underneath. If you want to play it safe try the 70. Perhaps room is not an option but you can also try the front pocket for your tent or bag. It's a good use space and eliminates the bulky shape of a rolled bag or tent.

@@ramoned20 It will be quite big without gear underneath but you could possible tuck some of it in between you back and the bag. I would not recommend it. Your performing a task that is completely opposite of what it's designed for. Also you might forcing materials/synthetics into your water - which seams counter productive of filtering your water.
