I am Japanese. This strategy using pump trucks may seem silly at first glance, but for us Japanese people, it was a very moving sight. This is because when Japan was hit by a disaster on March 11, 2011, a radioactive leak accident occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear power plants. With the building collapsing and a desperate situation with no water supply, the water in the spent nuclear fuel rod pool was rapidly decreasing. In response to this crisis, private citizens used pump trucks to spray water into the fuel pool, regardless of radioactive contamination. I was watching the scene in real time, and I was moved by the sight of these people taking action to protect Japan, regardless of the risks, and I felt a sense of awe and gratitude towards them. He may die, but he will face the crisis to protect his country. It always touches my heart to see their bravery at that time superimposed on the Godzilla scene.

Actually, the plan did not look or seem silly, it was quite realistic. They adapted what was available to make it work and they risked their lives for a greater purpose. If you have ever seen "The Amazing Colossal Man" the plan to use an actual giant syringe full of chemicals carried by soldiers to stop the giant by stabbing it in the foot was silly.

Am I the only one who's searching up Shin Godzilla reactions daily? I just love other people's reactions to this masterpiece of a film. Best Godzilla movie in my opinion.

To me, Minus One and Shin are among two of if not, the best modern japanese godzilla films alongside the 1954 movie.

The tragedy of this Godzilla is that it was in constant pain. Even when it was evolving it was a very painful process. Imagine that your body is rapidly evolving without you knowing what’s happening. Your bones are breaking and fixing themselves in new ways, your skeletal structure is completely shifting, and you can’t do anything about it. Godzilla really was just a scared animal that was in so much pain.

That tail at the end of the movie was Godzilla evolving to it's 5th form. Godzilla in this movie evolves to counter whatever danger it comes across, so naturally at the end of the movie, those things coming out of it's tail were meant to be a means of countering humanity as a whole. They would have been 10 foot tall mini Godzillas that would have gone on a rampage across the entire planet, and it was an outcome Japan just narrowly avoided.

In king of the monsters they used an oxygen destroyer in honor of what was used in the original gojira. Then they used a nuke to help revive him

This film is really good. The evolution of Godzilla is crazy. When he destroyed the city is terrifying. Good to know you enjoyed this one too.🙌🏻

I still hold that Shin Godzilla and Godzilla -1.0 are the best Godzilla movies post the Millenium era. Both so good in completely unique ways, must watch films for monster-film lovers.

20:54 Stage 1 was in the water, and all we saw of it was its tail eventually. Stage 2 was when he first came onto land, crawling through the riverways. Stage 3 was when he stood up and grew forearms. Stage 4 is his main form for the rest of the movie. And Stage 5... Well, mankind narrowly avoided that disaster. There are a bunch of video essays about Shin Godzilla, its themes and motifs, and they're fantastic. In my opinion, Shin Godzilla managed something not really done by the franchise since the original in 1954: It made Godzilla first and foremost, a terrifying, almost unimaginable force of nature. And, in classic Godzilla fashion, the movie was very much commentary on the world around it. The original was about the horror and devastation of atomic weaponry, including its unintended consequences (Google the Lucky Dragon 5 to learn more about that). Shin Godzilla was primarily about the slowness and inefficacy of Japanese bureaucracy in the face of a rapidly evolving crisis. In the movie, that's Godzilla. In 2001, it was the disastrous domino effect of a 9.1 magnitude earthquake, which caused a tsunami, which damaged a nuclear powerplant, which then spilled radioactive contamination into the area around it. They don't spend much time on it, but the abandoned boat floating in the bay at the start of the movie belongs to Goro Maki, the man who predicted the existence of Godzilla. He likely drowned himself in the bay where he knew the creature was, due to the loss of his wife to radiation sickness. I'm pretty sure this is my first time seeing one of your videos, so I don't know much about you. But if you're an anime fan, the director Hideaki Anno is most famous for his anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which I highly recommend. You'll see many similar themes, and he even used one of its most famous songs in this movie.

This movie is a response as well to the earthquake that caused the Fukushima nuclear power plant incident, the human story is basically meant to portray government ineptitude to respond to serious situations properly.

Godzilla is not the villain in this but the victim; the song that plays during Godzilla's first atomic breath scene says as much.

19:06 You mentioned the music here. The composer was Shiro Sagisu, who collaborated with director Hideki Anno way back in 1995 for the anime classic Neon Genesis Evangelion, where a different arrangement for this track can be heard. So, it's an example of the director plagiarizing himself.

This movie and GOJIRA 1954 are tied in second place in my ranking of the TohoVerse GODZILLA movies. They were tied in first place, but GODZILLA MINUS ONE took the #1 spot and knocked them into second place, with GODZILLA VS HEDORA in the #3 spot, and DESTROY ALL MONSTERS in 4th. Fun fact: Besides just wanting to make a fresh new GODZILLA movie, but it was also partially written as an indictment of the in effectiveness of the Japanese government in response to the Fukushima meltdown disaster in 2011.

If your looking to have more Godzilla reactions I recommend GMK or Final wars. Those are the more popular Japanese films that may get views. Final Wars is goofy and GMK is awesome and decently written.

Let me preface this to say this will be a lengthy comment/post. There are lots of Godzilla movies you have to choose from. I may offer a few suggestions that could help. These aren't necessarily the best ones. Godzilla is the longest running franchise at around 40 movies, so this is a more specific list. The original in 1954 is definitely where you want to start. I would watch both, the Japanese version and the American version with Raymond Burr. Technically, the sequel to that storyline is Godzilla 1985 (this is the American title), but I think it is called The Return of Godzilla in Japan. That skips a lot of Godzilla battling other monsters, and many of those are great. In 1962 (I think) there was a previous King Kong vs. Godzilla (think it was the 3rd movie about Godzilla), and the Godzilla vs. Kong from a couple of years ago has lots of easter eggs and little things that pay homage to that movie. Now, back to the shorter list...... Godzilla vs. Biollante is the direct sequel to Godzilla 1985 and there are 5 movies that follow that culminating in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah in 1995 that I would highly recommend watching all of those, because if my suspicions are correct, I believe ultimately this is where the Monsterverse will take Godzilla. I would also recommend Godzilla 2000 because you will get the first real explanation of an ability called "Regenerator G1." This will help tie some other movies together, including GMK (2001 film) and it plays a huge role in Godzilla: Minus One. Of course, there are lots of other movies, and many are great. The list I chose specifically is more of the menacing Godzilla with the exception of the films in between Godzilla vs. Biollante and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, but they are key with some plot points and set ups in the Monsterverse and where I believe that is headed. Ideally, it would be best to start at the beginning and work your way up, but it is definitely daunting, however it is also a mountain of content and I have yet to see any reactor do the entire franchise, so you'd be the first to do that. The Godzilla movies are broken down by era (theme and design) and that is way too lengthy to get into here. The last Japanese Toho movie prior to Shin Godzilla is called Godzilla: Final Wars and is a fun movie and has a ton of monsters in it. Good luck on your journey.

Regarding the Japanese government's hesitation, the following KZbin video may help you to understand why they acted as they did: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5OvfKCFarCka6M. The video is about Patlabor2 (1993) -- the movie was released long before the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Nuclear Meltdown (2011) -- but it explains the common undercurrent, the Japanese constitution and the lingering effects of the Cold War.
