One of the things that made me grateful for the release of Godzilla Minus One is the fact that Toho will leave Shin Godzilla alone and not force a sequel from it. Shin Godzilla is a masterpiece that's better to be left alone. The final scene with the humanoid Godzillas will get our imagination going and the follow up story in our head will always be better than what Toho could do with very limited budget. It's also thanks to Shin Godzilla that Toho finally being confident in making Godzilla movies again, with CG this time. Before Godzilla (2014) & Shin (2016), Toho really didn't know what to do with the Godzilla IP other than to lend it to Hollywood.

So a few things I think you'd appreciate, especially as a Godzilla fan: Shin Godzilla's design is _extremely_ reminiscent of the physical deformities from Chisso-Minamata Disease, which was a big influence on designs in *_Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind_* & *_Princess Monokoke_* by Hayao Miyazaki in depicting themes of post-war Japanese corruption and dumping waste material into a body of water causing the tragedy the way this does. The success of *_Nausicaä_* created both his Studio Ghibli & Hideaki Anno's Studio Gainax, so it's not surprising to see Anno using those themes as a foundation when tackling the 2011 Fukushima disaster response in a lot of the human elements of this film. The lyrics to the song, "Who Will Know" that plays during the destruction of the night attack on Tokyo are explaining Godzilla's emotional experience. They're haunting and make that scene even more emotional. It heavily emphasizes the inherent tragedy of monsters, but especially with the previous context of the suffering that's known from diseases like radiation poisoning inspiring the original *_Godzilla_* & Chisso-Minamata in this one that makes scene carries even more weight to Godzilla's perspective, and why it's seen as a constant aspect of post-war Japanese struggling. When they initially pause the attack because of the civilians, it's because the JGSDF (Japanese Government Special Defense Force) that was formed post-war has to act in an extremely defense-specific capacity, and thats why there's SO much red tape when they could be the cause of a casualty, and also why their hands are often tied when it comes to American intervention. It's the same reason why they're eventually strong armed into the thermonuclear bombing of Tokyo option, and have to resort to back channel means to overcome Godzilla by other means. Lastly, Godzilla's purple beam attack in this film ended up getting a nickname by Japanese audiences calling it the "mass-resignation beam" because of all of the members of the government who die in that single attack when it hits their evacuation helicopter. Love your reactions as always, but especially as someone else who's seen all the Godzilla films, this one has made a really lasting impact on me in a way I didn't expect, and it seems thats probably the case for you as well. (As I'm in the EU, I've gotta wait a while before I have any way to see *_Minus One_* but I expect that will be just exceptionally amazing as well).

It’s interesting how much better a lot of Godzilla movies become when you do research into the film and what the director was trying to do with it. Even some of the 60’s more campy films have some deeper themes in them that often aren’t obvious at first till you do a little digging into the production. I’ve seen minus one twice already, and I don’t think you will be disappointed. I took my mother with me to see it. She is not a fan of Godzilla at all, but she loved it and came with me again and loved it just as much the second time, she even talked my dad into coming and he admitted after he liked it as well (I knew he liked it because he stayed awake the whole movie, they are older so it’s big if he stays awake, it means he was drawn in to the movie)

About the nuclear bomb, from a grounded standpoint, it could be quite effective. Most people immediately go to the "radiation" aspect of the bomb, and think it would make him stronger. Godzilla may have a pseudo-nuclear reactor inside him, but the main effect of a thermonuclear bomb isn't radiation, it's to create a 2 mile wide ball of 100,000,000 degree plasma in a single moment. To be fair, Godzilla has been known to survive nukes in the past, but shin godzilla is a bit different. As powerful as shin godzilla is, he is seemingly much more damageable and mortal, like an animal, than most godzillas. If a few bombs from B2s can make him bleed, it's quite possible a nuke will just erase him from existence. The only concern I'd have is that if any single piece of him survived, he could regenerate or something, due to what's been shown of his mutative powers.

A quick reminder that everytime in the movie someone says that something is impossible for shin to do he does it. -It's impossible for him to go on land. He goes on land. -It's impossible for him to have a nuclear reactor as a energy source. They confirm he is getting his energy from nuclear fissure -It's impossible for him to survive atomic bomb. ??? Even one of the people on Yaguchis team questions if the bomb is a good idea and how can they be sure if it would work. So I don't know about you but I see a theme here, so I wouldn't be so sure about that bomb killing him.

Shin is 100% CGI,quite an impressive one I'd add considering the only 15 million dollars budget of the movie. There was a partial animatronic in scale, you can actually find BTS of it,but it didn't end up in the final cut, heck,I don't even know if the process went beyond filming it. Shin is 118 meters (388 ft) tall, just a few meters/feet shorter than Legendary's Godzilla current height. Those pieces of disgusting flesh among the rubble (that come from the injury caused by the bombers' missiles I believe) are actually growing as separate entities to colonize the surroundings. In one deleted scene, they even grew eyes and teeth!

Watched this for the first time a few days ago. I’m a huge fan of director Anno’s work on Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the cinematography & editing had a distinctly similar feel. One of the most unusual things for me, as someone who’s mostly familiar with Western cinema, is how often the characters in this movie looked straight into the camera. It was jarring at first, but it’s actually really effective at getting you to feel like you’re part of the action. It puts you in the shoes of a government minister being briefed on Godzilla’s attack. A very direct way to create immersion for the audience.

If you look at concept art for the movie, there were a lot of surreal further evolutions planned beyond the mini-zilla humanoids that began to budd off, including a giant humanoid "angel" with wings made of dorsal fins, which feels very inspired by the otherworldly designs in Neon Genesis Evangelion which Shin Godzilla's director also made. I absolutely love Shin Godzilla, it's tied with Final Wars for my favorite movie in the series (obviously, for very oppposite tonal reasons, haha) but I do think that it'd help the climax match the horror and intensity of the night scene in the middle of the film (which as is is undoubtedly the movie's crowning achievement) if the ending had Godzilla start to transform again into this sky-filling angelic figure with beams across the horizon right before it gets frozen, then you could still have the stinger of it budding off mini-zillas to have the "becoming a collective since human cooporation is what beat him" theme. Honestly., Evangelion itself would be a great thing to react to!

i saw somewhere that there was a concept art of its fifth form which involves its shedding its whole skin from the fourth form and what emerged was a almost tranquil godly humanoid feminine appearance of a godly being. Almost motherly some say that it might be mother nature herself trying to take back what was hers and destroy humanity. and what i liked about this is it is constantly in pain forcing hundreds of years of evolution into such a little time span i almost feel sympathetic towards it. There was also another form of its 5th form which involves binary fission where he’ll break off and create another godzilla or split into two.

These are part of the lyrics to the song "Who will know" which plays during the scene where Shin Godzilla uses his atomic breath/heat ray. The song is meant to be from Godzilla's point of view, stating will anyone ever realise that it's not a monster bent on destruction, but rather a creature in constant pain who can do nothing but move forward: If I die in this world Who will know something of me? I am lost, no one knows There's no trace of my yearning But I must carry on Nothing worse can befall All my fears, all my tears Tell my heart there's a hole I wear a void, not even hope A downward slope is all I see As long as breath comes from my mouth I may yet stand the slightest chance A shaft of light is all I need To cease the darkness killing me

One of the thing I like about Godzilla movies is usually the solution to the big bad isn’t a bigger weapon, it’s a smarter weapon. That our conventional weapons are not effective so we have to solve a scientific problem. Godzilla Minus One did this as well. We can’t overpower Godzilla so we have to out smart him. It usually not just “a big bomb” that will kill Godzilla, sometime that just gives him power.

What I think of myself as a Japanese is that the portrayal of politicians who are constantly engaged in useless discussions with no one willing to take responsibility is so realistic as to be laughable. In the movie, there are protagonists who try to make quick decisions, but in the real Japan, there are no such people, and even if there were, they are crushed by politicians who have grown old and powerful. I believe that "Shin Godzilla" contains a message of hope for the rebirth of Japan.

honestly, even though the third act felt a bit long, the whole ideology against a third nuclear bomb being dropped on them was just so powerful. The disgrace it felt to allow the same country that did it before to do it again. And then, having the people of Japan manage to (temporarily?) defeat Godzilla and defend their country just such a good feeling. Minus One is possibly my favorite ending to a Godzilla film, with the emotion. But this one felt just as powerful of a statement in ending, along with the horror of him at the end too.

You can tell this is a great Godzilla movie, because it stimulates so many ideas among thoughtful people. For instance, they say democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the other forms. An authoritarian government might have made decisions much more quickly, but it could easily be the wrong decision, costing far more lives. The democratic process, the necessity of going through the slow, frustrating work of collecting and weighing everyone’s ideas…it’s seriously imperfect, but it really is the best we can do. You never know who may have an notion or approach that strengthens the effectiveness of the final policy. Or even entirely exceeds it. The need for compromise, patience, and trying to discover the best solution to a complex problem - or even to know when to take use that protocol, as opposed to when to simply execute on the snap decision of just a few people - particularly when lives are at stake - these are questions that haunt society. Your reaction was engaging. I especially appreciated that, during the first “atomic breath” scene, you immediately grasped the scope of what you were seeing. Many people don’t. Or they don’t understand why it’s so emotionally resonant in the Japanese context. In that, and in later parts, of the film, it requires a level of historical knowledge I had thought basic to anyone over the age of 10 (or so) alive today, but have been proven wrong. This isn’t a grumpy “kids today” argument. This isn’t the fault of kids and young people. It’s the responsibility of each generation to provide a thorough education to the generation that follows it. It’s an absolute necessity to sustain a functional democracy. But we are creating a society of ignorance, granting high school diplomas to citizens who don’t know what a single thermonuclear detonation using a modern atomic weapon over a population center would actually do, or even that the US is the only country to have ever done that.

The Atomic Breath sequence is perhaps my favorite in all Cinema. Because not only is it really not an attack (Until he destroys the Bombers) It's really Godzilla puking out all of the Nuclear radiation that's built up in his body (which is why it's that awful, acrid looking smoke at the beginning) before it's set on fire and then turned into a focused, dangerous beam of Nuclear energy. IT even hurts Godzilla as you can see his mouth smoking from the damage it's done to him.

Shin Godzilla is the ever evolving "monster". Almost every scene you see of it shows it evolving. His body changes to what happens or what will effect him in a short time frame to support survival. It needs to breath Air out of water? Evolve to breath air (7:50). Cant go through buildings easily? Evolve with stronger legs and bigger tail (11:10) Getting hit with something you cant reach? Evolve to fire a beam (22:55) Multi-able targets? Evolve to fire more beams (23:25) Cant hit everything with back beams and not enough beams to shoot everything it the mouth? Evolve with a tail beam (31:10) Unable to fight a army by yourself? Evolve to be the army (36:20) As of why i stated "Monster". The origin of it was a prehistoric sea creature that adapted to eat nuclear waste in its habitat. It was forced to then endure millions even billions of years of evolution in minutes. Everything that happens to it causes it pain. It would possibly evolve so much it would in theory become a God.

The last scene showing what was going on with his tail is to show that they managed to escape complete extinction. As you know godzilla was evolving to adapt and "counter" any threats to him, when tanks and planes were attacking, the breath and his "lazers" from tail and dorsal plates were the response. But then once he got pressured by the humans he started to think of them as the main threat, and started to produce a "counter" to that threat, similar to how our body produces antibodies agaisnt a virus, humans were the virus and the humanoids coming out from his tails were the antibodies, he was going to release those creatures to wipe all humanity and protect himself, those humanoids were bigger than humans and their only purpose would be to exterminate humanity.

I think what makes this one of my favorite Godzilla movies, is that its the first one in a long time that tried to make an actual modern version of the OG movie, I know that the 2014 movie tried to do that too but this one did it a lot better. And on top of that, part of the reason why the Japanese government was dragging their heels at the start of this movie was to mirror of the real life government of Japan took so long to deal with the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, really go look that up, it was one of the major inspirations for this movie

This is like one of the best Godzilla films out there, because the fact that Shin is different from other Godzillas, the way he is portrayed is so interesting because he is just a fish at first but intake the radioactive dump that was dumped in the ocean, and when he arrived at land with blood dripping is Shin suffering in pain, because some say Shin wants to die but his body cant die because its resisting it, and whenever he roars means screaming in pain. And in his atomic breath scene, the music played in the background and the lyrics starts to sing that was like his inner conciousness conveying what Shin really feels in the movie.

To me this is hands-down the best Godzilla movie ever made. It's a perfect combination of old-school and modern filmmaking as well as the perfect combination of old-school Godzilla and modern Godzilla. I felt like I was watching the original 1954 release the first time I saw it and still do. I love how we got the realistic, "boots on the ground" version of a logical and dramatic response to a real-world catastrophe of epic proportions. We got to see the backstory of the world's greatest monster come to life as it evolved and mutated from horrific creature to monstrous deity and how can you not love that? Thanks for reacting to this modern-day classic!

Basically Shin counters everything that Damaged/Killed it. Aquatic form > Went on land and died because only had gills > eveolve into bipedal (to move better) and lungs > returns fully evolved to be amphibious > US managed to injure him using the bunker busters > counters by evolving anti air & phase radar.... hence why the "ending" shows that thing coming out of the tail. Humans bested/killed it > evolve into humanoid form to be the apex of the food chain

I'm japanese. When you mentioned "The Third Bomb," I was surprised at the part where you shed tears for the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 80 years ago, and at the same time, I thank you for your tears. I think this is a movie about what we can do when a war or disaster strikes that citizens cannot resist, how we will face it, and how we will die. As you say, it may not be a ``Godzilla movie,'' but it's still in my top five movies ever.

Shin Godzilla is such a terrifying creature. The way it constantly evolved to counter any obstacle it came across really gave it the feeling that we are watching a true, unstoppable force of nature. And with concept art of its 5th form and beyond, showing it would have evolved so far beyond what was thought to be possible, it truly is the most powerful and horrifying Godzilla that has ever been put to screen.

There is actually another horrifying deleted concept art about Shin Godzilla where Shin Godzilla instead of mutating and evolving to his next stage he is 'shedding' his old form and then to his next form and each time he sheds a nuclear explosion would ensue where his skeleton from him shedding from his old form would be visible in the nuclear explosion like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon after that his skeleton would regenerate and become his next evolutionary form

I need these Humanoid-Zillas to be a thing in a future movie, it can't just end like that, you can't tease me like that. Shin was the first (original)Godzilla i watched in like 25 years, before that i happend to watch bits and pieces of the old ones, airing around here around christmas time xD Loved it. Shin Godzilla starts kinda slow but it keeps building and building with every minute.

The entire motif of this version of Godzilla is EVOLUTION. Every time it developed a new trait it was in direct response to challenges it was facing. Having trouble walking on land? Evolve some bigger, sturdier legs. Overheating easy? Evolve a self-cooling system. Being attacked from long range? Evolve to shoot lasers from your body. And so on. The final scene was Godzilla's next evolution which got interrupted due to the coagulant. What better way to fight against an army than to become and army yourself?

After a few viewings of this movie, I have come to a theory regarding Godzilla's origins. It seems no one thinks about the beginning before Godzilla is shown. The boat that the scientist owned is found abandoned right where Godzilla becomes its first evolution. Does this mean anything? Perhaps, did the scientist commit suicide for the turmoil Japan put his wife through? And if so, what happened to him? We don't ever really get any information as to where he was and if indeed he did throw himself off the boat. My theory is that he might not have even committed suicide. Maybe he dived overboard and swam down into the bay and possibly the radiation contained in that area made him merge with fish and other sealife which became the start of Godzilla...? Going over the movie quite a few times, I have never heard any explanation as to why the boat was abandoned and where the scientist is. It's implied that he committed suicide.

The film was a huge hit in Japan, people who had never seen Godzilla movie before to the theater. The main reason is that the film's depiction of Godzilla is very similar to the Great East Japan Earthquake. Godzilla was an earthquake, a tsunami, and a nuclear power plant. In the real world, people lost a lot of things, and the Tohoku region is in the process of reconstruction. On the other hand, in the world of the movie, it is a fantasy that if people work together, they can overcome the disaster of Godzilla. Shin Godzilla is a film that Japanese who experienced the disaster can relate to. It was not a big hit in the world because it was completely aimed at the domestic market.

Godzilla story in this is so sad a creture forced to forever evolve feeling endless pain, even if it wanted death its body simply wouldn't allow it and just evolved to fight against anything. If you listen to the lyrics of the song playing during the atomic breath scene the ladies lyrics are sad and with pain while the male voice is the need to survive no matter what. Shows the two sides of godzilla a creature in pain but forever fighting.

Nothing can survive a direct hit from atomic bomb. You may he saying "in 2019 he survived a bomb" not really, that wasn't a direct hit. I assume that was an atomic bomb and not thermonuclear, and especially considering its size means it wouldn't have that wide of a fission range. Anything within the fission range would be pulled apart atom by atom, and in a thermonuclear explosion, it would then be reassembled into microscopic bits of random elements. Even if it was just fusion alone, the chemical makeup would kill any living being, with all of its cells and water getting turned into random elements and compounds. The director of Shin Godzilla even stated that nothing can survive a sirect hit from a nuclear bomb.

I always thought if there ever was a Godzilla and Cloverfield crossover series of movies those things coming off Godzilla's tail at the end of the movie could battle those weird spider/parasite bugs that fell off the Cloverfield monster and attacked everyone on the street and in the subway in New York. That would be pretty wicked to see that.

First I thought the monster appearing in Tokyo Bay would be Godzillas enemy inthe movie but then it was Godzilla itself and I was sad but the more I learned about the movie the more I loved it. Might be my favourite Godzilla by now. So my opinion on it evolved just like the monster in this movie, you could say :D I can also recommend the movie "Fukushima" in terms of humans against catastrophe.
