While it does definitely have less story cutscenes than something like SMT IV, I still think the story is incredible. The minimalistic style to the storytelling really just clicks with the rest of the game. And it’s not like nothing happens in the story either. There are tons of different factions in the demon world that are constantly at war with one another. The different ideologies are really deep and complex, each with their own ups and downs. Just like the rest of the game, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I personally think it is amazing.

1:34 Correction: Lucifer. Satan and Lucifer are considered separate entities in the MegaTen universe, with completely different goals and convictions. Edit: 6:16 While I agree it sucks that the music remains compressed, chances are that ATLUS simply couldn't update it due to having lost the source files of the music tracks. After all, game preservation in the 2000s wasn't exactly the best and they haven't shown any signs of still having access to those old files. The OST release lacks the multiple solos of the battle themes (which is why they couldn't just slap it on top of the game (that and it lacks some of the in-game tracks)) so the signs mostly point to this theory.

This is definitely an "Our Band Could Be Your Life" kind of video game. Distinctly not everyone's cup of tea, but for those it clicks for, this game is absolutely unequaled. Personally, this is one of my favorite games of all time and, to me, one of the very few JRPGs that could reasonably be called "Art".

@@nkoonkukoo yea experimental maybe wasn’t best word to use? the progress from semi open world from 3 and 4 to the incredible world and gameplay 5 has is what i was primarily discussing. while persona’s definitely helped with this progression with p5s world, persona is a much different but still killer series. it sucks that it was having the main course for a while tho, but also it was deserved a bit ?

Personally, I feel that some of the charm is lost by the HD paint- there's some kind of grit to a low-res (not pixelated or low-poly) game that feels appropriate for nocturne. I especially think smoothing out textures and resolutions highlights the issues with the original graphics like bad animations/models. The same goes for the music- I think the chunkiness of the original was a big part of its identity, so I'm glad they kept it. I genuinely think the low-res cutscene shown here looks more fitting for the tone and models than the HD gameplay. This is similar to the Majora's Mask 3DS remake for me, I think a lot of the creepiness went away when they smoothed everything out.

I played it on pc it was pretty much omost like a gotcha but it was fun if you got into it also it was all in Korean so it made no since on how i was doing on quest ... so i ended up not understanding the play an just kept capturing an fuseing new monsters until i had 4 god based demons

I'm just gonna copypaste something I said to other people who are getting into Nocturne for the first time: I wouldn't recommend starting on the extra easy ''merciful'' difficulty as it dumbs down the game very much to the point it can be played on auto without party members. Normal is aight for beginners and you could even try hard if you have experience with the Persona series. If you feel like you're having too much trouble with a specific boss fight you're free to turn down the difficulty, but playing on merciful for the whole game is just pointless IMO.

I don't see much that's worth it in the deluxe version. Apart from getting the game 4 days early, the only dlc that might actually be worth it is the DLC pack that gives you music from other SMT games.

I can’t wait to pick this up, both since it’ll be my first time playing it, SMT game in general, since I’ve only played Persona thus far, and I wanna own it physically. I won’t remiss anyone for waiting for a sale, since this just seems like a bare minimum remaster like with 3DAS. But since it’s only $50 and I’m not really interested in anything that’s coming out in June (or have a PS5 to actually play it, like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart or FF7R Intergrade), I don’t have much of an issue copping it when the normal version drops next week.

I’ve been a Persona fan for ages and it introduced me to SMT, and I’m glad it did. I haven’t finished SMT 1 and 2 but I absolutely love both games. The mmorpg was developed by another company, imo it had a lot of potential and a lot of charm but it was too much p2w and imbalanced with characters being too much stronger than demons and defense being great on paper but useless on higher levels as a certain build could passively tank and deal dmg at the same time.

A "remaster" that _doesn't_ update the textures of their models, leaves the music with same compressed PS2 audios, and doesn't even change the aspect ratio for cinematic cutscenes either. How this a "remaster" again? Seems like a basic HD port with add VAs and QoL changes like saving anywhere and being able to directly choose your fusion demons skills.

The 7/10 might seem a bit harsh. But seeing things like the bad looking FMVs, the compressed music and the price (Not to mention the performance issues in the first version). It's very fair, because they're reviewing the remaster itself instead of the game. I'll actually wait for a Steam sale, price seems more fair and I can't stand the fact that they didn't use the uncompressed soundtrack for a supposed HD remaster.

Def made me rethink buying this. Never played any smt games but people have called this the best jrpg of all time (crazy I know) so I was ready to go in blind at 50$. My question is, is this one of those games that will be sold out immediately and then we won’t be able to get an opportunity to purchase a physical once it is? There’s a couple games on switch where I was waiting for a sale and I now dont own them because they sold out n I now have to pay 100$ just to get it, which I can’t do.

The original PS2 version can easily be gotten online for $20-30 or like the reviewer said if have PS3 get it off PSN for $10 instead the nintendo switch copies no doubt will be upmarked as usual while PS4 copies will drop in price after few months

I definitely enjoyed this review. But one thing that I would like to correct is that: SMT and Persona only have a 4 year age difference. So it is incorrect to say "much longer". Haha.

Just FYI, in SMT Lucifer and Satan are different characters and, if memory serves correctly, Lucifer is the one who turns you into the Demifiend.

I got it on ps3 eshop so will wait for a sale. I do want it eventually once it's cheap enough or I lower my backlog a little. I prefer handheld games whenever I have the choice.

I agree this would be a wait 4 sale but I preordered instead because Atlus games and especially SMT games not only are never on sale but they are very collectible and they tend to ramp up in price pretty quick

For anyone wondering, Persona ever since 4 golden has stopped being an SMT spin-off. Due to how big persona has gotten, with spin-offs of its own.

I don't think so and fyi atlus west only translates the game so it's up to atlus Japan to fix any issues in game

@@timelymirror7826 I did extra research and a patch was released last year that fixed menu lag for the most part, I can’t find info on if they fixed the Matador cutscene though

They did patch majority of lag as I played the Japanese version on the day it released and played after patch.

I’m going on easy and before people rake me over the coals I have a huge backlog and games like monster hunter stories 2 disgaea 6 etc won’t be long to arrive so if I’m gonna do all routes easy is needed
