It was also in earlier Devil Summoner games (which SH2 is part of), and later also in Digimon games (which are inspired by Devil Summoner series, and earlier Digimon games were developed by sam people who made Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers on Sega Saturn). It was called Demon Loyality System - you gave gifts for Demons for rising their loyality with Devil Summoner, when Loyality meter was maxed out demons never escaped or obeyed own master, and had also bonus to dmg. Demon Haunt system looks like a reworked Demon Loyality system from Devil Summoner series, mixed with Soul Hackers 2 interactions.

They did that from Kyyuaku Megami Tensei on SNES in 1995 (which is Megami Tensei 1&2 in one package with new graphic and QoL improvements). It's old strategy in niche publishers (and Atlus was that kind of publisher before Persona 4 Golden) to milking own, small fanbase as much as possible.

I completely understand when people claim they like persona more because it ultimately comes down to what you look for in these games. I like the darker tone of most SMT games and the fact that the demons are party members and I know other people like that often more lighthearted tone and social elements of persona. And I’ll also agree Smt v had a lackluster story to the point where I dont remember any standout moments compared SMT IV, strange journey and even the persona games.

Alex, great review but there’s nothing to feel sorry for. I have the opposite affliction, Persona 5 (my first) just has not cut it for me while SMTV (also my first) was an obsession when I beat it on hard with its original release (500hrs 3rd cycle). I’m picking up the PS5 version this time around and I have a feeling that getting Persona 5 on the Switch may help me enjoy it since I do like how Golden plays on the Switch. Maybe you should ‘switch’ as well!

Shouldn't skip out on this. I love vanilla V and they've fixed pretty much majority of the issues I've had with it. For instance every demon having their own special ability. Because you basically dont keep them for long it would entice people to keep certain ones for longer. I find that change to be huge and for the better. I could go on, but trust me if you get Vengeance you will not be disappointed.

Different strokes for different folks. I personally prefer the SMT series over Pokémon by a mile. Pokémon benefits from nostalgia factor and is the biggest brand in the world, focusing on a more family-friendly and casual audience. He's doing ok, he uses cheats, and he decided that he doesn't need to "grind". But what really gets me is that he skips the GAME. He's skipping the learning, the difficulties, and the characters by obtaining insta kill items, skipping dialogue, and rarely exploring. At that point its not a game, but a check list. Once hes done one box he goes to the next, without any difficulty or learning curve to struggle with. Actually, this bothers me more than I thought. I never thought about it like this until now. I need to bother this f***** (friend).

I like both series a lot. I would say both have their own unique appeal as monster collectors-both have weakness exploiting based combat, but SMT has more complex system compared to Pokémon’s simplified system. But I’d argue Pokémon’s sense of creature individuality sets it apart from SMT. For Pokémon, there’s a wide range of moves to choose from, battle abilities to take into account, or held items to further boost their combat performance, etc. Ultimately, the actual combat is rather simple, but there is a lot of depth when it comes to team composition for those willing to look into it. SMT’s depth meanwhile can’t be ignored, so it’s centered around constantly switching up your team, but ultimately settling into the same few niches. I love SMT a lot, but I think my one minor complaint compared to other monster collector games is the lack of individual monster identity compared to something like Fossil Fighters or Pokémon, since move pools are limited and fusion can result in the final product having a near identical move set and niche to one of the demons used for said fusion. But I think the introduction of unique skills and demon haunts will bring a ton of individuality to these guys and really make team composition interesting!

@@ThePokemon12149 Yes it's forgivable when it was only on switch as they're far from the first non Nintendo affiliate company (or even some affiliate companies in case of game freak) that seem unable to optimize their game to run smoothly on switch with minimal obvious sacrifice of polish. Probably a mix of system limitation and generally working different from a normal system. That said, as much as I like the switch, with there being multiple releases now, and with the switch version costing the same as the others, there's no reason to get the switch version unless it's your only option or they managed to properly tune it for switch. I'm in the same boat. Was fine with the switch version problems on first run but if I buy the new version it's not on switch.

So basically you have like 5% that are the same in the beginning and a few story and plotpoints so overall 15%-20% that are the same. You get new Bosses Demons so one and so forth, also once you play through a story you get new Demon Fusions (most of the time, the Bosses of said Path) so once you played through one of the Kanon of vengance path endings, you can just replay one of the creation paths (or vice versa) and you've seen most story stuff besides of couse either Paths other endings.

SMT 5 was my first SMT game and it was literally a masterpiece-visuals, gameplay, music, and even the story! I know people said they wanted more human connection, but there wasn’t anything there lacking; the game just doesn’t put focus on the humans as much as persona! Plus I don’t think the story was trying to hyper focus on people(at least as individuals). It was more of an existential crisis sort of deal. Also, I know people talk about the difficulty, but it’s truly not a difficult game. It’s just you can’t stumble through the game combat mindlessly- you have to play to the strengths and weaknesses of your party and the enemy! Sucks Alex wasn’t able to gel with it. But if you enjoyed Pokémon gen 1-5 you’ll love this

While I can't say this with 100% accuracy. If you haven't already started a new game+ in this game. Then I believe you should be able to access the alternate storyline. It seems like no matter if it's your first play through or not. You can choose either storyline to playthrough. Now if you started new game+ and already choose one of the storylines, then yes. I believe you would need to restart you're new game+ save in order to choose the other story path. As once you choose which one you want to play through. I don't believe you can change it without restarting that save from the beginning. But I could be wrong, as this is just my interpretation. Ultimately with it coming out in a day, if you wait to see others videos on it. Maybe someone will play the new storyline on new game+ and that will answer you're question! I wish you luck on finding you're answer!

4:08 Its not that story is barebones, but the whole story is so you can understand what the demons and gods wanted, to being a true god. Which is difficult to connect to some, you need to read a lot of the content and most won't that. With Veangeance this is easier since you can understands human point of view much more easier than gods or demons.

As someone who largely enjoyed base SMTV but felt like it was held back by two glaring issues (story and performance), this rerelease seems to be addressing them (at least if you get it on anything other than Switch, since I’m picking up the PS5 version), which I’m immensely glad for. And rather than just being the same game with added content like P4 Golden or P5 Royal, I’m glad you can start the new route from the start so that returning players like myself can jump into the new content right away. I doubt it’ll capture my attention for long when Shadow of the Erdtree is next week, but with both this, P3 Reload and Metaphor ReFantazio, Atlus definitely has us RPG fans feasting this year.👌🏽

Hmmmm since the original story was so barebones I don't think I'd personally commend the improvement this time around as the bar was set pretty low. I do wish they incorporated this as a DLC for owners of the original game. This Atlus re-release cycle personally is getting exhausting when the re-release on the same console.

I don't understand why they don't offer people who bought the original an upgrade path. If they just charged you $25-$30 for the new version and give you all the DLC with it, it would reward original owners of the game even if it's only for those who bought it prior to the re-release while also making it just as accessible for newcomers. Instead, now we have people *avoid* buying the game within the first 3 years *specifically* to avoid being forced into double dipping. It would be nice for people to be able to pickup the first edition of a new release and feel confident about not being slapped for doing so.

Hey Alex my favourite Atlus franchise in no particular order are shin megami tensai, devil survivor and persona. Atlus did a very amazing job with both 5 vengeance and devil survivor 2 record breaker hands down 😁

This will be my first jump into this series and idk whether to get switch version or PS5. I love the portability of the switch but if it runs like people said the original did I might have to get it on PS5

I played the OG on Switch, and unless it’s your only option it’s definitely better to get it on any other platform.

I played the original release with the true ending and completing all sidequests it was still really good and still playable but yeah it was pretty bad performance wise

I mean the portability aspect definitely makes the switch version compelling still. I'm gonna play it on PC this time around but I really enjoyed the original game on the switch, didn't think it was held back by the performance at all really. But I'm looking forward to the smoother experience for sure. Most of all I'm looking forward to not having to use my joycons again with that horrible drift. Seriously it made the game so much more challenging

People definitely whined about the Switch version wayyy too much I played the whole game. It's turn based and there was only really noticeable slow down in very very rare circumstances.

Everyone needs to stop complaining about this how come Nintendo can remake games like Mario vs dk and Luigi mansion dark moon and sell them for $60 with no new content when atlus just made a whole new game and bundled it with the original game. The gamer community is worthless and ungrateful. If you guys don’t like it don’t buy the game or make some more money so you could afford it. It’s not atlus’s fault you all are broke!!

I think the reason for the hate is that they're releasing them on the same hardware which they can literally just add them as DLC or expansion or something along those lines, instead they just rerelease the game with ambiguous new content for 60 dollars AND on top of that they have their own seperate DLC for whatever reason. It just doesn't feel like a proper rerelease of some old game like when Nintendo releases Mario vs DK on switch which is an ancient game compared to SMT V to Vengeance, of course some of those rereleases of Nintendo are actually terrible like Skyward Sword HD but Atlus is consistently awful with some of their practices.

@@bass2126 well I’m happy atlus did this with smt v because I loved the original and vengeance to me feels like a sequel. Also I would’ve hated dlc as I want a physical copy. If atlus didn’t put the original game in vengeance and just called it smt vengeance no one would be complaining. I hope these complaints don’t affect atlus because I love their games and new content in definitive editions

@@TheRetroCleric324 well Vengeance to me at least doesn't sound like a sequel, it reuses much of the same characters just throws them in a different context I guess, which could be a cool trick & makes this rerelease a lot more bearable, I generally don't like their enhanced rereleases as they play around too much with the original concept & kinda bloat it with unnecessary stuff (looking at you SJ Redux, P3P, P4G). V could've been the one I don't mind them changing stuff up but they included the original game as well in Vengeance which is fine I guess.

I finished this game 3 times in max difficulty, witnessed all endings, captured all demons... I can't skip this. I played on Switch and found no problems.

I have so many mixed feelings over SMTV. I played the original, and since it was my first SMT game, I didn't feel as critical over it? I also didn't try comparing it to the Persona games. But reflecting back on SMT V...I don't really know what I saw in it? It's easy for me to get into this sense of "tunnel vision" when it comes to jrpgs. Without really noticing the negatives. Looking back on it, SMTV is incredibly tedious gameplay wise. I had to do so much grinding to collect all the demons in order to do fusions. And unless you play it on super easy mode, you have to do even more grinding to level up, just to not get wiped out by bosses or even just regular enemies. I remember pouring so many extra hours for this one collectable...and I can't even remember why now. I think you'd exchange the collectables for upgrades or items in this special shop. It's nice they tried to add those fast travel transports in the over world. The huge sandbox over worlds could be infuriating to transverse through. I would waste so much damn time trying to get to different levels/heights of the over world. It was very poorly designed. And then there's the story. People aren't exaggerating when they talk about how bare bones and mediocre it is. Maybe this new route as a better story, somehow? But eh. Even if I can get this game on sale for dirt cheap, I don't think it's worth a re-play at all. For those who have never played it at all? wait until it's $30. Not worth full price in the slightest.

It should've been DLC, not a full re-release. I checked the video to see if the main story changed but nope, it doesn't look like it and it's definitely not worth paying twice to get another incomplete story arc.

The other reasons one might not like this game is because the world creation aspect is very dreary. There's like 4 maps and each one is basically destroyed city with filter slapped on it. After a while you feel maybe disinterested, maybe a little depressed even. I remember feeling like I wasn't interested in exploring the world and was trying to get to the end asap. I think this was a weakness to the original games, maybe it is less so in Vengeance. On the plus side this game feels very japanese-y which I like a lot. The monster creation is another draw. Though you might have a monster in your party that you like eventually it will become comparatively too weak to justify keeping in your party, which sucks.

After beating the canon when you start a new game with Vengeance what happens??? You all don't speak about that. & all you guys reviews are the same Switch lol it up. The way ppl 1st reviewed this game & after playing 4 (which I didn't like) I was like nah I'll buy Bravely Default full price & saw it was on sale so I picked it up & said let me try it & damn I was blown away (Like it more than BD2) any enemy that's to hard trust me there is a way to beat them all hint Big Bang is a start with sum added buffs & debuffs on enemies. So looking forward to vengeance later on.

Very excited to play this game. I played the original and loved the gameplay and music, but the story was mediorce. Hearing the new story route changes a lot is very interesting and I will not be playing the Switch version because of the performance.

I don't know if this would be enough for me. I was so excited to play SMTV as a longtime Persona fan and...I disliked it. I hated the utter lack of QoL features. I hated traversal and having to constantly backtrack with a confusing map. I knew going in that they would be gone, but I still missed social links and how they impacted gameplay. I've played and enjoyed many more traditional JRPGs, but I couldn't shake the thought that I was just playing Persona but worse

Is the performance that bad? Like unplayable "bad"? I see a lot of negativity for the switch version so I'm wondering how bad it actually is. I play games like atelier on my switch and wonder if it's at least as decent as them performance wise?

It's completely fine, the loading is super fast, almost too fast cuz the game lags a bit just when you finish fast travel, other than that it's a very consistent 30 fps with some minor dips, & it's a turn based game it's not like you'll need a consistent 60 fps so it's perfect for the switch.

I played through the entire game when it first released on the Switch years ago. It was alright, but I do agree with you Alex, something is just off about it. The battle mechanics are great, but the story is very bland and boring. Also, I didn't like the music. I know it's a dystopian world, but for turn-based RPGs, I want catchy battle music, something that's more upbeat and enjoyable because I'll be listening to it very often. The wild battle music in SMT V is awful, and the environmental music while running around is dull and depressing. On top of that, if the performance is just as bad as the original with constant frame rate drops and slowness while running through the overworld, then it's not worth it. Maybe SMT VI will be better.

atlus continue outright telling people not to buy their games on release (which is when their sales matter most!!), like thats just an objectively insane move. i bought the original when gamestop closed down so uh i guess im going to just wait til this version goes at least 50% off lmao. it just sucks that they keep pulling this shit instead of embracing dlc. i just cant see this release model being sustainable when hardware improvements have slowed to a crawl and the ultimate editions are launching on the same systems as the originals (it made sense with persona 3/fes since dlc just wasnt possible back then. p4/g and p5/r were updated ports for different systems. smtv/v is just... the same game. on the same platforms. that all have online stores and dlc capabilites. ugh)

Loved the original game.. Mostly. Some of the bosses were needlessly brutal. There's a fine line between challenge and frustration, usually this game gets it but there's a few times they missed the mark
