Shin Saimdang, a Joseon Female Artist and Writer [History of Korea]

Shin Saimdang 신사임당 (1504-1551) was a Korean artist, writer, poet and calligraphist born in the Joseon dynasty 조선시대 (1392-1897). She was born in Gangneung 강릉 in Gangwon province. Her birth home, Ojukheon 오죽헌, is well-preserved to this day. It was the home of her maternal grandparents. She was the mother of the Korean Confucian scholar Yi I 이이 (1536-1584). Her nickname was Eojin Eomeoni - “Wise Mother” 어진 어머니. Shin Saimdang was her pen name. Her real name is unknown.
Saimdang's mother had a great knowledge of Neo-Confucianism, history and literature as well as calligraphy, embroidery and painting. Saimdang had 4 sisters. This might explain why her parents educated her and her sisters like if they were boys. Her background also explains how she educated her own children later in her life.
During Joseon, women were expected to be obedient to their husbands but Saimdang was not easily persuaded by her husband, Yi Wonsu 이원수. Her husband was in love with a courtesan named Kwon. Her husband decided to live with Kwon and of course Saimdang disapproved of it. During Joseon this was not seen as a problem… life was different back then to say the least.

I am truly enjoying the drama. What an amazing person in so many level. I love reading about the Joseon period. Like any culture, women were considered as second class citizens. We have come a long way with equal rights for women in the world. Korean history is so rich with wonderful culture, literature, art and education. Love this video. Thank you so much.
