Frederica mentioned it beforehand in episode 15 but Kiri was part of the Nouzen Clan. A distant cousin to Shin, which is why he knows that that’s the Nouzen symbol. Also the reason as to why No Face didn’t want Kiri to kill Shin is because he’s a high value target for them to turn into a Legion, hence the name they’ve given him: Báleygr.

Additonal note: Baleygr is another name for the Norse god Odin and can be translated to mean "the one with the flaming eye" (although Odin only has one flaming eye)

They're on a one way trip. Frederica knows that Shin is planning to die. Unlike the others, she could even see Shin in the middle of his charge against Kiri. You might think she's a hindrance that doesn't know what she's doing, but you're only seeing her as a child and not an intelligent child with power. She knows exactly what she's doing. Her being there prevents Shin from thinking he can just defeat the Morpho and die. Instead, they are now forced to defeat the Morpho and come home, otherwise she will be killed. None of them are so awful as to want that. That's why she says "I'm a hostage". Not to keep them from doing their job, but to keep them from ignoring the part where they are expected to make it home alive. She's making their lives a bit harder, sure, but you even said it yourself how weird it is that Shin gave her the gun with what it implies. The 86 aren't you or me, WE think about survival. That's why you are assuming they are trying to survive by default. Perhaps the others are, but Shin is absolutely not concerned with living. Frederica already knows this about him, and is forcing him to be concerned with it because she simply can't convince him.

Shin gave his gun to Frederica so she can kill herself and not be turned into a Legion unit. Remember they can use human brains, and since Kiri voluntarily gave himself to the Legion (most likely his entire head), he has more sentience than other "Black" sheep.

He was never a black sheep, he’s a Shepard like No Face and Rei. Get your own terms right before explaining to others :P All Shepard have higher levels of personality but the legion can still force control them all

@@TheRoleplayer40k I know he's a shepherd. I didn't say that Kiri is a Black sheep. I said "he has more sentience than other "Black" sheep"... meaning he has more sentience than Black sheep.

Baleygr is indeed Shin, and the Legion's reasons for not wanting to kill him off completely are explained later in the story (later volumes of the light novels, specifically vol.4)

high level legions like the Morpho/Kiri are more or less sentient, in a way the more intact the brain, the better, i think

also yes, the Nouzen clan have the headless knight as a symbol Kiri here recognising it as such made us, the viewers, understand that it's not just a "oh, cute, Rei got it from that kids book, and Shin decided to use it too" situation

can I just say, you have the cutest dimples!! love seeing you smile! another great episode pale rider is Kiri and no face is the original AI, the legion still want shins brain, Kiri is special he wanted to be part of the legion, I do enjoy the "yapping" too

headles skeleton knight was originally nouzen clan mark, the skull knight book shin read when he is kid is sended by his grandfather who was a nouzen patriarch, telling them that they were nouzen.
