Shinedown Interview On New Album ‘ATTENTION ATTENTION’ & Depression, Drug & Alcohol Abuse

One of the things that has always attracted me to Shinedown's music is it's inherent "realness" in a world where it so often feels like everything we are fed media wise is engineered and calculated and plastic. I can't say how many times "Sound of Madness" gave me the carthic release I needed but could not achieve, or how many times "I'll Follow You Down" actually gave me hope after I was sure hope was an emotion I would never feel again. Every song on this album is moving in it's own way... but I have say this, out loud, somewhere: When I heard "Monsters", I almost had a complete emotional breakdown. I could take every line of that song, apply it to my own life, and write a mini-autobiography as to why it... fits. Over the years, as a poet and an artist, I have wrangled and snuggled and dealt with my own monsters in as honest a way as I could... but this single song managed to capture the anguish, the determination, the pain, and the fight in a way that I have yet never managed. Because man... every. single. DAY. is a fight that Im not always sure I can win. I wrote a line once, when I was trying to scratch my way up from rock bottom. "Forevers a tempting escape, from the emptiness, pain, and the ache"... and that single line, in one of my hundreds of poems has always stuck with me because I choose *not* to escape, and kept fighting. It was the singular hardest moment I have ever committed to words. This is an entire album of *THAT*... a collection of moments that these men didn't have to share but did, despite it being things most people won't even discuss in their closest circles. Im sitting here right now, tears running freely, my old scars ripped open cause I never actually let them heal right... but just knowing Im not alone makes dealing with *me* a little bit softer.

They’ve been my absolute favorite band since I was 12, and this entire interview is exactly why. All of their songs sound different and individual, but still sound like Shinedown, and every song is so personal and meaningful. I always tell people that I don’t like pop music because it generally is only written for money and doesn’t mean anything, but Shinedown always avoids that. They wouldn’t write something just for fame, they write because it’s important to them and is emotional for them, and that makes me beyond happy ❤️

May 4th can take it’s time getting here but man I am so waiting for this album. When it comes to being positive reminded me of when we were at the Cleveland Clinic my granddaughter who was1-2 gave a lady hug out of the blue and she admitted she needed that. She was a school teacher and the compassion she showed brightened her day

Hard to pick just one. But if I really had to, "SPECIAL" would be the one. Too many of us are so self involved that we don't notice what's actually going on around us. And honestly, nothing it's more important than our fellow man bc we were all created the same and will all die the same. Why can't people realize that none of us are better than the other and deserve to be treated with the same respect we crave? Thank you for the album and thank you for the interview. Looking forward to seeing the band for a third time in Aug 2018!!! Congrats guys!!
