The first time I heard Hard and Juice were actually in the SWCVI concert live. It makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE when you see the live performances of them, which is pretty consistent with the SM Performance concept, whether intentional or not. Shinee has always been stage performers first, and the songs really come alive there. I can totally see where Juice and Hard would seem disjointed if youre only watching the MV or listening to the song for the first time. Overall in the album, all of the guys seemed to have stepped up their vocal game if you can believe it. I def see what you mean by Taemin's singing getting more relaxed, and its allowing him to do really interesting things in this album.

I don't think I've seen anyone mention it here yet, but HARD is basically a love letter to 1st gen Kpop, which SHINee would've grown up listening to. It's interesting to see the disparity between international listeners and Koreans when it comes to opinions about the song - Koreans (especially millennials, lol) are clocking it as a homage to Seo Taiji and H.O.T right away, and HARD's doing very well in SK.

Yes, this is such a 1st gen sound. It’s kind of funny in a way - you can immediately tell which fans started listening to kpop in 1st/2nd gen (or at least which ones have listened to the older groups) and those who have only heard late 3rd/4th gen groups.

For me both Hard and Juice are still very Shinee style songs. Hard opening up with a piano as the main instrument is a perfect example of this. Shinee has always been experimental with their style, but the sound is always quintessentially them. I love the album. I'm the one who spoiled on Patreon. Sorry again. The album is basically a love letter to past and future SHINee and their solo stuff. Key also wanted to do this kind of dance (Hard) and he was so happy working with Beyonce's dancer (Kasper also helped choreograph). Taemin's background is HipHop too... he once missed it so much he applied for a tv special that sent 4 dancers to LA to study and they had to make their own HipHop choreo routine by the end. He had a lot of fun experimenting with Advice and he said Hard felt like an extension. They consider Juice to be their hardest choreo and Key's slight critique of Juice is they can't sing it full live but they can Hard. Juice was SM's pick and the original title. SHINee's was Hard and they fought for it. The comeback special coming out Wednesday will have Hard, Juice, and 10X performances. Key picked Identity as his favorite (it's so Key, not a surprise), Minho likes Insomnia (for tone), and Taemin likes Satellite for lyrics but Minho attributed Sweet Misery to Taemin during the concerts. I'll put this here and on Patreon - Gravity's lyrics include Jonghyun songs. The writer posted about how they're a huge fan of SHINee and wanted to incorporate him in some way. It's incredibly touching.

Back then I fell in love with SHINee after listening to songs like Get it, Shout out and Get down. I love that they still drop similar songs, like they did with Trigger and Alive or now Hard. And you can tell this is nothing new to them. It doesn't feel pretentious.
@Sophie-pv4ug

Shinee started off with this kind of genre tho, but since they’re an experimental contemporary group they keep changing genres every comeback. So hiphop/R&B is not somewhat new to them. Who knows maybe they’ll do jazz or heavymetal for the next cb. Then again, we can’t expect people to like each and every one of their songs. It goes back to personal preferences. Try check out other songs in the album . They’re all great.

I just have to say... I grew up listening to this type of hip-hop and I absolutely LOVE Hard. And SHINee has done this genre of music in their early days so it just brings back memories in and out of kpop for me. Of course, it's not everyone's style so it's only natural that some like it more and some less. But actually, opposite of you, I love the change of the beat and their return to the hip hop roots hahaha I think this whole album is something like.... coming from the past to the future lol And I have to add.... Jjong would absolutely slay in this album. And he would love every second of it
@dheu
@dheu Жыл бұрын
I’m gonna disagree with some of what you’ve said. I don’t think it’s about SHINee trying to sound younger but them trying something relatively new (relatively because they have done hiphop before). They’re an experimental group, they’ve always been experimental, so they purposefully don’t stick to what they’ve always done in the past. The fun part is them injecting their SHINee sound into different genres, not them always doing the same kind of vocal-heavy R&B tracks. But I get that you’ve got a preference. Juice is harder for me to get into. Hard I was afraid would be harder too, but it has a very addictive beat and I absolutely love their low soft rapping in the chorus. I like it even more than Don’t Call Me. There are more vocal heavy tracks later in the album that you will probably really love.

@dheu Жыл бұрын
@@Doyoungismyfave Exactly. What IS SHINee anyway? They have done it all from R&B to dubstep to deep house to reggae to hiphop to ballads to rock to everything in between. Generally I've found that when someone says something "doesn't sound like SHINee" what it means is that they haven't heard enough of SHINee's discography to realize that SHINee doesn't have a genre to be pigeonholed into.

I get that not everyone has the same taste but comments like "this isn't Shinee" or "Shinee just tries to sound younger" annoy me so much because do you all even know Shinee's discography?? People being surprised the contemporary band does exactly what they are described as will never not be funny to me. A group like Shinee doesn't stay relevant for 15 years by playing it safe and sticking to the same stuff over and over again. Just listening to their bsides shows you they tired pretty much everything under the sun even before this comeback. If you don't like certain songs that's fine, just say it and leave it like that but don't act like it is out of pocket when Shinee definitely went there before 🤷‍♀️

But staying it's "not shinee" or them "trying to sound young" is just untrue. They are not "trying" anything. People who know the group already said it sounds like old school Shinee or 2010 Shinee. Actually I’ve listened to all their Korean albums and even ranked them on my other channel and I still stand by comments. Their title tracks have a particular feel Hard does not on first listen and that’s my point. 15 years in, a title track like this is unexpected and “fresher” and I don’t think that’s by mistake and not a bad thing to acknowledge either. Even previous releases like Lucifer, Everybody and Ring ding dong had way more vocal hooks and melodies, song structure than Hard does even though they were quirkier. I don’t want them to play it safe either, that’s what defensive fans are hearing, I just want it to be a bit more cohesive sonically lool.

I do hear newer gen sound but i honestly think it just sounds like Nct/ SM sound not 4th gen sound. The structure of the song reminds me of some nct song(and maybe because nct does a lot of mixed 90s hiphop too) but it also reminded me of a bit of H.O.T songs and some older SHINee songs like Get Down, Shout Out, Get it, etc. Also i get why u want VOCALS(so did i😅) because SHINee are known for that and excell at it, but they dont always need vocals on vocals on vocals, they wanted something new and maybe wanted a title track that was more simple on the vocals since they have MANY title tracks with difficulty vocals 😂, but HARD did take me more than 1 listen to be fully into it, Hope u react/see the live performance, it might change ur mind hehe, the choreo is very HAWT too 🙊, love your reactions 💕💕

I had the same exact reaction to both hard and juice. While there were parts I really liked, overall neither song does it for me (and at this point I've listened to the album 15 times over so they're definitely not gonna grow on me any time soon). In regards to Hard, it really does feel like they're forever trying to add every single changeup they can and not let these songs breathe at all. I usually love these kinds of chaotic songs, but admittedly it doesn't always work. Hard really reminds me of Super M's One(monster+Infinity) in that it sounds like they took 2 completely different songs that didn't have anything in common and frankenstein'd them together, so it just sounds jarring when you get to the second part of the chorus no matter how many times you listen to it. DCM worked because the chorus was catchy and it was cohesive. And then Juice, I have nothing (positive) to say about it lol I was so relieved when 10x came on and every song after it was just as good if not better. I love that SHINee experiments, and I'm glad they're having fun and still finding ways to change things up 15 years into their career, it's just that this particular concept wasn't my cup of tea. Thankfully it wasn't the entire album.

Thank you! I looove how you explained your thoughts here, the songs don’t get a chance to breathe and it’s frustrating. Shinee had experimented in the past and done it super well too but these change ups did not hit for me. Whew Juice is something lool.

To be honest Juice is not fully my taste even if I like hip - hop too, but i fell for songs like Satellite, Identity, Sweet Misery and Insomnia at first listen. Hard is also nice,especially some parts like Key low voice at the end or Taemin smooth voice which is getting better with every year, but I must agree that there is a little bit too much changes is like a few seconds of one part, few second of another part and again some few secons of next part. Overall I must say that is nice to discover diffrent styles from Shinee and i really respect them for that.

Yes Taemin's voice had a restraint or hesitation that prevented his flow of his vocals to go on smoothly. Yes I agree I come to SHINee for vocals. Honestly even if there was no music their voices can carry a song all on their own.

not SuperM tease at the end lmaooo people are saying that the MV storyline is Onew falling into the piano and they went searching for him and it kinda makes sense, there's a cartoon character falling into "oblivion" there, as well. They might continue the story on an album repackage

Omg I was waiting for your reaction !! I was going in thinking you'd either like it, with the anti drop and all, or completely hate it 😅, which would still be fine it's your opinion. But you liked Hard from how you've been vibing to it, right ? I was also confused at first listen but now I'm obsessed !! As for Juice, I get that the beat is kinda Dem Jointz messy but I don't mind it. I think it's quintessential SHINee to be unpredictable from one title to the other, and then gives us everything and more on the bsides. I totally respect the "not my genre" argument bc we all have different taste, but some ppl have been saying it's an "nctfication of SHINee" which I don't think is the drag they think it is, AND not true !! They been experimental with their music since day 1, and it's good that they don't always SANG but still give us great vocals. And of course you would like 10X better 😌. It has that Producer Jonghyun vibe to it, like it could be in 1of1. And I can definitly hear his vocals in this I think it's a great album overall 🩵

Listen, Hard is probably one of my least favorite songs by them but i understand why they put it and Juice as openings for the album, ao it's fine. Thank you for your remarks. But SHINee rapping isn't new. This type of song isn't to 'become younger' they are just revisiting what they used to release as a younger group back in 2010 but with more mature skills. You not liking it is different from disrespecting their choices and insulting producers.

I don’t think I agree with the older you get - not singing bit.. cuz Juice sounds like 1st gen kpop so rather they’re going full retro, rather than trying to sound more 4th gen 🤷🏻‍♀️ And they debuted with Replay so it doesn’t really add up for SHINee

@@Koko3op I see your point but most of 2nd gen group (10+ years) songs that have come out recently haven’t been that harder sonically. Take Bigbang, Suju, Kara or 2pm for example. I do agree Hard matches with DCM with the hiatus leading to explosive title track, but they’ve done that many times (2 yr break from releasing Korean music and coming back with Dream Girl + Everybody)

SHINee are my faves and I'm okay with them doing some more rap on this, but I've had the thought as well of hmm are they doing it while they feel they can still get away with the concept, kind of like they're doing hard choreography while it's still reasonable? 10x had me sooo happy, it barely started and I was like IS ANDREAS ÖBERG FINALLY DOING A SHINEE SONG AGAIN?? And he sure did, I'd know his songs anywhere.

In fact this album is not an attempt to sound younger, it's actually a way for shinee to make us rediscover their entire discography! They basically wanted for their fans to celebrate their 15 years together with something that showed every aspect of their discography/identity... That's why from 10X to Gravity you could imagine Jonghyun sing to it! But Juice and Hard are a reference to their early albums' rap :) I understand why you don't like it but i personally loooove it !!!!
@Koko3op
@Koko3op Жыл бұрын
I don’t think the album is an attempt to sound younger but rather the two “title tracks”. Juice which SM had chosen and Hard which they chose. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that those two start the album and the vibes are “more Shinee” from 10X onwards. Labels always want their artists to appeal to the younger base and pointing that out isn’t a bad thing.

I personally liked hard a lot. The chorus is catchy and i love the whispering parts. The bridge comes a bit abruptly to be honest but still enjoy it a lot because of the vocal moment but i like this shinee more hip-hop style. It's something that taemin wanted to explore more and I'm glad they are doing it. Except for the abrupt change in the bridge the song doesn't feel not cohesive to be honest. At least to me. And as for juice...i actually like it a lot hahahahahahaah i find the song interesting. I honestly don't think "wanting to be younger than they are" is the reason behind this more hiphop sound. They are a contemporary group and they have been in the game for 15 years. They have to evolve and i feel like they are trying things they didn't have the possibility to try much before. Taemin has shown interest in rapping a bit also in his solos with advice for example. The chorus of hard really reminded me of advice in a way hahahaha I still have to finish listening to the album but there are a lot of songs that could fit more your taste in it as far as i listened. For now my favourites are like it and satellite but i enjoy basically every song of the album

If you want a group that make the same type of song over and over then go listen to another group and I’m not trying to be mean here, I once replied to you on different platform about the same thing but clearly nothing changed so I just don’t understand why do you insist on trying to box them group and the members into limited sound and genres when since their debut and it never happened and won’t happen in future either I know you are exol and exo have most of their songs they play it safe and they know their sound which is mainly straight direct rnb and stick with it but wishing shinee to do the exact same is very weird because they were never that It’s actually pretty fine that you bias Taemin and it’s his idea for having a 90’s hiphop inspired songs and a homage to 1st gen groups like seotaji which is what happening here plus hiphop isn’t new to the group they have multiple hiphop inspired songs like this in their earlier albums so this outrage and hate is pretty weird I do know that you listened to their discography before and hated like 60 percent of their songs because you only like when they do specific genres but again it’s their music and they can do what they want with it Call me harsh or whatever but just you are honest I’m honest with my opinion as well

I can totally agree with your sentiment on Jonghyun. I love shinee so much but haven’t been able to vibe as much with their last 2 releases. The songs are good but there’s a missing element there and it’s the heart and soul that he brought to their tracks. I agree with your comments on the the production melodically but i didnt really mind the 90's hiphop inspired 2nd part chorus. It felt fresh to me, something Shinee hasnt really done. The production in some parts sounds a little overplayed and old, especially for SM songs. I really liked the the harmonic part after the digitally altered "HARD" but found the "HARD" to be a bit jarring. We also have to consider their circumstances... As Shawol know, they had a hard time with Key saying "It wasn't easy making this album". All the love, thanks for the reaction. 💛💛💛

I am not fond of the rap chorous at all I think taem being into hiphop and Kibum with strong songs are the reasons we ended up with heavy rapping on the album compared to their previous albums(think about advice and gasoline) Circle and chase were more melodious and emotion heavy albums They are vocally gifted singers and rap is not their strongest forte. I hope this is a phase and we'll get to jazzy or acoustic phases in the future too
