SHINee was the first kpop group I got into and Replay was the song that got me into them. And I was just watching Taemin’s live performance of “Sexuality”, so it’s just so funny to watch him in Replay as a 15 yr old nugget.

I'm glad you guys remembered I said this was from 2008 even though it said 2011 on it 😀 And Ambitious Ace correctly identified Taemin (not sure if you just remembered what I said he was wearing or if you just recognized him.) Around this time (2008) SM did try to penetrate the American market with their top female artist BoA with her English song "Eat You Up". Unfortunately it wasn't a success but the U.S. really slept on this joint..I think it's fire (reminds me of 80s Janet Jackson but also modern) Check it out sometime. Now in her early 30s she's one of the pillars at SM (she debuted there in 2000 at the age of 13!) and while still recording music (she recently came out with "Woman") she's also a creative director there.

I couldn't stop crying, it's been a year since Jonghyun passed away, the first one to sing in the video. This is my favorite Shinee song and I'm so glad you reacted to this. Yeah, sometimes folks act like if you show old kpop to new reactors their heads will explode because it looks and sounds different from the stuff coming out today. But Dame Diddy and Ambitious Ace are in their 30s and have experienced a lot of different music throughout their lives. And I like Dame Diddy referencing American music that came out then to put it into context.

Danielle I was just starting to get into SHINee about 2 months before Jonghyun's passing, but I was listening to quite a bit of their stuff, and I felt like I could still hear him (in Story vol1). It was a bittersweet experience.

Danielle I wonder if they seem ‘less appreciated’ because of present-day greater focus on Kpop in general and 3rd Gen groups in particular? I’m not complaining, I’m quite happy for the overall attention. But the down side is that they’re just old enough that they’re not promoting with the same intensity as others. Then there is the set-back from the tragedy, needing to mourn and essentially catch their breath. They probably have an eye on pending military service, so that slows things down. I guess it adds up to needing Presence in places like this, to bring them into the sphere. And then some patience. I think SHINee is the type of group that is kind of like a grapevine hidden in a forest. It takes more effort to encounter them, but the vine is well established and the fruit is sweeter. So finding it is extra worth it.

I still love this video. Jonghyun, the first vocalist, is the one who yanked me into the Kpop Nation...and it happened with this video. I haven't been the same since discovering Kpop 10 years ago. Yup, this was their debut!!! And this regularly lands extremely high on people's lists of best kpop debuts. If you watch DareDB's kpop channel he's been doing poll videos every three years (2012, 2015, 2018) of the best kpop debuts and "Replay" has landed the #1 spot every.single.time. Pretty incredible as these lists tend to shift as new kpop fans come in & some songs & groups fade from memory. But "Replay" has always had incredible staying power.

I am a hip hop head and also a 100% confirmed Shawol (shinee fan) I’ve even traveled to different continents to see them specifically and the reason this song may sound familiar is it’s often compared to the song “Dance Tonight”by Lucy Pearl in terms of structure and melody (I think it definitely inspired it and that’s why it resonated so hard with me when I first heard it). I’m biased so I’d say react to all their back catalogue but for me I think the ones that give a flavour of their progression over the last 10 years plus would be: 1) Ring Ding Dong or Lucifer (solid kpop songs with iconic choreography) 2) Sherlock (my first shinee song and totally an MJ tribute including choreography by Tony Testa who worked with MJ too) 3) Symptoms or one minute back (these showcase their RnB credentials and also get to check them out live) 4) View (amazing house vibes) 5) 1of1 ( New Jack Swing tribute -imagine if New Edition or Today did a Kpop song in 1991, this would be it!) 6) Good Evening (after the heartbreak of losing Jonghyun this song and whole comeback in 2018 was so moving and extra props if you recognise the 00s RnB sample in the song!) I could go on some of the deep album cuts are straight up fire and their live performances are legendary too, they are my ultimate Kpop group for so many reasons and I’m excited to see you discover them too.

I have always run hot and cold with Shinee - absolutely love some of their stuff and hate others. But that is to be expected for a band that has been around as long as them with such a vast discography and constant reinvention of their sound.
