I think Ring Ding Dong is one of those songs that's difficult to appreciate if you weren't listening to electro-pop in the late 2000s/early 2010s. The same can be said for a lot of kpop that came out around the same time (2nd gen). It all has a distinct sound from that era, which I find nostalgic but can totally see the resistance others have toward it.

my favorite genre of autotuned songs are the ones where it's obviously a stylistic choice cause we know damn well they can SING sing (like EXO's "Lotto") and i love how in Ring Ding Dong there are some parts in the bridge without the effect where you can hear Jonghyun going off

I think a lot of people say, "oh no, not Ring Ding Dong" because they don't care for the autotune nowadays. It doesn't bother me. I thought Minho's hair in RDD looked good though, it suited him. If anyone's hair was questionable it was Taemin's, lol. And that was Onew, not Key. Then you watched Hello, one of my favourite SHINee songs. It's a song that lifts your mood when you hear it. Yes, I guess it has a nostalgic feel, as you said. And the mv is so adorable. So, your next one is Sherlock? - you can look forward to an iconic song with groundbreaking choreo.

"Hello" was released in 2010 -- 2 years after their debut. SHINee's look in their "Hello" MV is totally the boyfriend look. In this MV they are supposed to be dressed like boyfriends.The story is how they are trying to work up the courage to say hello to the girl they like and to ask her to be their girlfriend. :D Jonghyun is sitting on the step waiting for the girl to come home and he has a gift in a box, Key has a ring, Onew has flowers, Taemin -- because he is only 17 in this MV -- has that plushy that he is decorating for the girl he likes and Minho has a giant teddy bear in the passenger seat of his car. LOL It's a pretty simple story about just being brave enough to say hello. Onew was the one you thought was Key. Key is the one in red with the short hair, Onew is the smiley one with the longer hair. Minho is the main rapper of SHINee and he raps in all of SHINee's songs. However, depending on the song, his style of rap can be very different. Sometimes its a smooth rap and sometimes its a hard rap. It all depends on the song, but there is almost always a rap section and Minho is the one who is rapping. Key is a sub-rapper of the group and he often will accompany Minho in the rap section. If you go back and listen to all of Minho's parts in the songs you have reacted to so far, what you are hearing most of the time will be him rapping. And Minho has song writing credits on almost all of SHINee's songs because he writes all his rap sections. Fun fact: We don't need to know who is on the other side of the door because you are supposed to imagine it's you who they are coming to see. Shawols are SHINee's girlfriends and they are trying to work up the courage to say hello to us. LOL So in this MV, Onew and Jonghyun were 20, Key was 19, Minho was 18 and Taemin was 17. Jonghyun with that little girl is so precious. If you want to see more of SHINee and Jonghyun with little kids, if you haven't already, you should check out the reality show SHINee did called "Hello Baby." It was a show where the members of SHINee spent several weeks raising a little 3 year old boy and they were supposed to be his surrogate "Appas" (fathers). It's extremely cute and you can find episodes of the show with English Subs on KZbin. All the members of SHINee are actually really great dad material and they all have a soft spot for little kids -- although little children kind of make Onew nervous sometimes, LOL. You should also see Minho when he spends time with little kids, it will make your heart melt. Ring Ding Dong was the first SHINee mv I ever saw, actually one of the first kpop mvs I watched, so it became a template for me of what a kpop mv "should" look like. The autotune was so on trend at the time but it really didn't age well, it sounds MUCH better live where the vocal effects are toned down. All of their hair was so iconic. It was definitely an earworm, it was banned in schools during exam season! In Hello the one with the long hair you called Key was actually Onew, the second strongest vocalist. Key was the one in the all red outfit and also at 8:49 singing and dancing in the centre. Your face when Taemin first appeared with the hair was too funny! Minho rapped in Love Like Oxygen, Amigo and Juliette before this, it's really just Replay for earlier title tracks where he didn't have a full rap line I think. It's so fun following your SHINee reactions, I'm enjoying the 2 mvs at a time as well!

What I like about your SHINee journey, is that you do this "timetravel"- not many reactors do so. In 2009 Taemin was 15 (!!), Minho and Key was about 18, and JH 19, and Onew 20 (he is the leader of the group). I saw a clip on youtube where they talked to some young students advicing them NOT to play Ring Ding Dong during exam periode because it was too addicting and would be disturbing on their focus...LOL! It was a fact that some primary schools in this time was disturbed by students playing Ring Ding Dong all the time!! LOL! (Sorry I couldnt find that video again!) BUT I'll give you a treat insted from 2009 (NOTE; the year is the same, but as you see it is uploaded on YT much later)- It is an AMAZING performance of SHINee covers LADY GAGA "Just Dance", and Key doing a solo and NAILING his cover of "Hair" and "Judas". i do not know any Kpop who dared to cover her songs, let alone other singers globaly (!)- What struck me more, is that they are so young, yet extremely talented. Key is simply awesome in covering songs in english!- ENJOY! How I interpret the story in SHINee's "Ring Ding Dong" is, the song is about a sort of love at first sight and thoughts of that person keep ringing through your head, so much so that you start to become obsessed with them. It's more than just protecting the girl or your love, but it's about wanting to have her all to yourself and not allowing anyone else to come between you, etc. (As the English part of the lyrics says, "Fantastic, elastic ..." because thoughts of that person are constantly bouncing around in your head.) In the story in the MV: If you notice, at one point, you see all the members dressed in white and they are standing in an all white room looking into the mirror. However, the image they see in the mirror is not their reflection, but what seems to be their alter ego or inner self because you see their mirror images with brooding expressions and they have wings. But their wings are not white like an angel who is pure and good, they are grey like angels of darkness. So, maybe this is showing how their thoughts are not a pure and innocent love, but one of passion and possession, etc. You see them in the white room with the white clothes because I see that as showing how they are hiding their true selves -- on the outside people think they look innocent and pure, but once you get to know them they have far less pure intentions. When in their black and red outfits this is more their true selves. The only explanation I can see as to why they are shown lighting the candles without even touching them is a way to make it clear that they are different then what they seem and they may have "magical powers" that can be used to attract the girl and make her theirs, etc. I interpret the butterfly they talk about in the lyrics, and the one you see them with in the MV, to represent the girl and how she is beautiful, and fragel and flits around in their life attracting them and distracting them, etc and they want to capture her and make her theirs. Fun fact: It is now thought that SM may use the butterfly in "Ring Ding Dong" to connect SHINee to EXO's storyline drawing connections between the butterfly we see in EXO's "Mama" MV; and it might be connected to NingNing's butterfly concept in aespa's storyline as well. Beyond that, I don't really have an explanation of anything else that is happening in the MV. Most of it I interpret as just part of the aesthetic of what was the new cool think and what they were doing with MVs in 2009. Taemin had just turn 16 about 2 months before when "Ring Ding Dong" was released. The boys' hair and clothing styles and the aesthetic of the MV was supposed to give them more of a bad boy image, to sort of contrast the fact that when they debuted with "Replay" they had a boy next door image and they were given the title as the nation's younger boyfriends -- people had a pure and wholesome image of them -- so they wanted to show that as SM's experimental boy group, people should never expect them to stay the same. SHINee will forever be changing up their image to show many different sides of themselves and all different styles of music and dance. "Ring Ding Dong" was showing a new side of SHINee. This was only SHINee's second comeback after debut, so it established their role as the ever changing and evolving group that was expected to keep setting trends and coming up with new concepts, styles and sounds. Everything SHINee does is tendsetting and slightly ahead of its time because of their experimental concept. They are the ones that set the trends when it comes to the next music style and dance trend and they are known for their numerous fashion and style trends. With everything SHINee does they are expected to be the first and to show the industry the next direction to take. Fashion designers have always coveted a chance to work with SHINee as a group, or even the individual members, because they know that if SHINee wears it then it will become the next big fashion trend. That is how much influence SHINee has in all aspects of the entertainment and fashion industry. Fun Fact: Minho's long hair and Jonghyun's "Lion" hairstyle in "Ring Ding Dong" is such an iconic look. But Minho always hated this hairstyle, LOL. He has never liked having long hair. He begged SM to allow him to cut his hair and it took a few weeks before they would let him do it. They made him wait until they were done promoting for this album because their hairstyles were part of the album's concept. And therefore, Minho has refused to ever grow his hair out again. ;P Also, almost all of SM's boy groups had similar hairstyles during this time period. :D Take a look at Super Junior or TVXQ in 2009. Their hair looked like this too. hehehe. This was just sort of the look for Korean entertainers back in the day. SHINee were setting tends even with their hair. As you discovered, "Ring Ding Dong," is one of SHINee's most popular songs. This is totally the look and sound that was just becoming the new it thing back then. As others may have mentioned, "Ring Ding Dong" is such an iconic song and it's so catchy that it has been said that in Korea this song is banned from being played anywhere or listened to during college entrance exam time. When it first came out students complained that the song would get stuck in their heads and they couldn't concentrate on their studies or on the test. :D This is also one of SHINee's iconic choreographies and it is one of the dances that every rookie group in the industry, both boy groups and girl groups, are required to learn and know, and most have covered the song and dance at least once in their career even still today. If you want to hear the song without the auto tune then you need to hear them perform it live in concert. Try their live MBC music festival performance of "Ring Ding Dong" in 2016, kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZ28pqWlmLGjn5o. SHINee's songs are always way different performed live. You will see how SHINee has grown. This song is part of the era when auto tune was brand new and it was the new cool thing that everyone was using in their new songs. SHINee was ahead of their time when this song came out and it blew people away for its sound and style, which many had never heard before. :D

RDD song is memorable for me because when I watched Key performance of this on a festival musical show that was streaming live back in the day in 2011 I was like that's it. He is my bias. Everyday learning more and more about him and appreciating his vocal, dancing skills, and acting skills made him my ultimate bias and is til this day!

Watch out, RDD will sneak up on you. At first you'll think wtf, then soon you'll find yourself returning to it because it's just a weird, crazy, fun song. And NO ONE had a similar sound. Others explained that it was banned during school exams because the students couldn't concentrate. I agree about Taem's hair - didn't like the color. Yeah, that was Onew not Key. But Key did sing immediately before Onew. Key always looks like a sassy boy ready to pull a prank; Onew always looks squishy huggable. Minho has rapped since debut, seems like he got more parts non singles, this was actually one of the handful of times he got decent singing lines, which he gets more often now. 'Get Down' off the album 2009 Year of Us (same album as ring ding dong) is actually an all rap Key/Minho song if you're interested.

From day one he did the rap, only in Replay his rap is very smooth but he did it, in Juliette he wrote his own rap lines he actually started on the SHINee World album (Love's Way, Love Like Oxygen, One for Me, Graze, Best Place) as you see he was the first to write on SHINee, but just his rap lines Jonghyun was the first to make a complete song, I think Minho is very underrated in so many ways, it's true that Jonghyun wrote a lot of full songs and some he composed also but Minho is very talented in writing too, I think only in Area he wrote more than rap lines

many of us worry about someone reacting to rdd is because of the autotune. while the song itself is fine, the autotune is out of trend and many ppl who are new to kpop & weren't into electro-pop music in the early 2000's/2010's get put off by rdd sometimes and kinda get the wrong impression about them as a group (they think they can't sing & stuff like that); hope this explains why the reaction is that why....... yes the song was played too much and very popular to the point it is banned from being played during exams period because it gets stuck in the head and won't make students focus lol

Shawols’ issue for RDD (MV at least) was more on the autotune.. but that’s a thing in 2009 so definitely of the times. And I personally have no issues with RDD. But SHINee LIVE def. if superior.. and they don’t do the autotune during lives so SHINee’s voices are clearer. 😅

There's just about universal disapproval of the use of autotune in RDD and a lot of people can't see past it. Otherwise it's a great pop song and the choreo is very strong.

Most people can't stand the autotune, which is why the live version is preferred, but I still like both lol. I'm glad you liked Hello, I have many favorites but this was my first favorite SHINee song that hit different so for me its a specific kind of special. Whenever I wasn't happy or was feeling down, I would listen to this song around when it came out. The only song to get close to replacing it as my #1 was Code. More of a then and now sort of contrast, personally. The songs keep getting better. 🖤

I think the reason Shawols are talking about RDD is because there's a lot of electro synthesizer and some people didn't like kkk because was used a lot and SHINee members didn't need it that kind of tune in their voices , actually most of us prefer this song on live show because they don't use it much The members apart from Minho were tired ​​because this song was playing everywhere kkk actually Minho and Key danced in the military more than 10 years after kkkk and we were waiting for Onew because we all know if one does something everyone will do kkk Key doesn't really like RDD but he dances anyway kkk On the same album, they have JoJo that they promoted together, but because RDD is such a catchy song, people don't talk a lot about it and I really love it more than RDD, but it's true, this song after listening to it sticks in my head all day if not all week hahaha

I don't know if you're aware, but "kkk" (with 3 Ks) is a letter combo with a VERY bad history and reputation (in the U.S.A). I wanted to let you know so you don't have people attack you for it, especially since I don't think you meant anything bad by it here. ♥ Edit to add: If you were to get attacked for it, it still wouldn't be your fault. Just that people can be very cruel online.

To me it brings me back to waking up at 4 am to wait for the new Shinee song and my mom yelling at me for getting up late for school. For me no more school and lost my mom, so this brings me back to that.

You are having trouble telling Key and Onew apart, which i did initially as well cuz they are both doll-faced (meant well) the, uh, key is in their vocals. Key is nasal (in the best possible way, a SHARP voice) and Onew is open, he even sings opera -- seek out Onew singing the Puccini aria "Nessun Dorma" freaking amazing. Key, however, remains my ultimate bias, chic, sassy, smart and smirky as hell. Plus Key and Taemin's vocals have evolved to the point where they can hold their heads high next to Onew. Onew, however, can still hold a note much longer than either of them

You watched RDD just before Hello where minho rapped and forgot about it! Haha. Might be because the song is a lot slower and the rap part is more prominent as compared to a rap in a fast-paced song.

I love Ring Ding Dong, even though the auto-tune is over the top and the English lyrics are absurd (what does "fantastic elastic" even mean?). And I love their hairstyles here, even though I am in the minority :) But the song was so ridiculously popular, that even the members of SHINee started to grow sick of it, especially Key, who said that he wasn't a big fan of it from the start, since it didn't suit his musical taste. And then he had to sing it multiple times plus he heard it wherever he went. On the other hand they were well aware of the fact that this song, along with Lucifer, brought them massive popularity, because even older people on the street started recognizing them.

The first person who sang RING DING DONG was JONGHYUN a great singer and dancer but sadly he passed away 3 years ago it will be 4 years by December 18 😭😭😭😭 He was my bias all of a suddenly he died 😭

I think the thing that bothers most people, at least it's that way for me despite still enjoying the song, is the heavy use of autotune in it. Like they really overused it in that one. But that's not surprising since it was the time kpop discovered autotune for their music 😂 The song slaps when they perform it live tho imo 👏

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. I am so excited to start watching ur Shinee content. I recently got to watch a reaction with all the MVs. So i am halfway caught up i think. But now its relisten time. Plus, I love to hear what u think of each song. Taemin bias here and OT5. Ring Ding Dong is a no for me. Sigh. That hook needs to be cut from the song and maybe it would sound better. Wince. Taemin's hair is not great here. Minho's hair is fine to me. Water choreo is cool. Yep heard it was way overplayed that the HS's banned it because ppl could not get it out of their heads. Facepalm. I did notice the Bigbang reference in the lyrics. Hello is so cute.
