Ahhh, SHINee and ballads is like a separate chapter really. I have a playlist consisting only of their ballads and whenever I listen to it (and I do a lot) it takes me to the most peaceful and romantic places... Their voices are just so incredibly beautiful and soothing, I can’t find this quality in any other group...

Funny that you say Onew sounds like he has an Opera voice. One of his most iconic solo covers is of the Italian opera song, "Nessun Dorma." CDnee since debut. Even other idols are amazed of how they sounds like their recordings sometimes even better in their lives. In all SHINee songs, thier ballads are always my favorite compared to the upbeat because of the emotions they bring with their harmonies and the feelings they convey through their voices. Onew sings opera too perfect for a musical actor that he is. He's rendition of Nessun Dorma on their Tokyo Dome concert is amazing. Thanks for the reaction. 😍😍😍

I really relate to the comment you made about how differently EXO and SHINee affect your emotions. Exo has always been one of my go to groups for a mood lifting, exciting song: Even there slower songs keep me happy but calm. SHINee on the other hand are the group I listen to to calm down and be at peace. Sometimes I can just be sad with their beautiful ballads. Its always interesting to see how music can affect a person in different ways.

Onew is one of the best vocals in Korea, check his solo in Blue or nessum dorma or check Rainy blue, do you know he has the record for holding a note the longest for 45 seconds, yes, he held a note for 45 seconds every time he sang MY Friend... this song written by Tesung Kim / David Kater / Young H Kim, I love this song so much, their vocals and sound is lovely, Onew is a tenor, but he can do some low notes too and he has a high range too, I thought he was a baritone, but no, he is a tenor, his range is just amazing... SHINee Harmonies are always magical.. seriously I can listen to them sing all day. I love their jam/dance songs but I also super love their BALLADS & slower jam songs coz I can hear their voices and harmonies clearer w/o the loud background music. When you were asking about who’s doing those harmonies or where are the backup singers when there’s only 3 members, for fun fact KEY has a major role on singing harmonies even though he looks like he barely singing in that song but actually he’s the most member harmonize behind the members in almost every SHINee song. He’s one of the reasons why every song of SHINee sounds harmoniousand and perfectly connected in all aspects.

You're so right. My boy Key always had the talent but he was still young and less confident way back then. But he's done nothing but improve throughout the years, he is his own powerhouse now. His 6 musicals really helped. I've seen every musical he's done and I can tell you he improved drastically with every single one. Personally, Key is my favorite vocal in SHINee :) I just looove the tone of his voice, I can't get enough.

LOL, be careful, you have to remember that this was back in 2008 when Onew and Jonghyun were just 18 years old and Key was only 16. ;D Although the original version of "In My Room" is with only Onew, Jonghyun and Key. Over the years they have actually performed the song with all 5 members several times. If you think the song is beautiful now with only 3 members, just wait until you hear it with Taemin and Minho included. The 5 part harmony makes the song even better. And it's already pretty great with just the 3 of them. You should see a performance all 5 of them did of the song in 2013. Ughhh the best. I still love that you're going through the entire album because it's throwback after throwback for me. This album and their old R&B stuff hits me in the feels. I love everything they do, but this album remained my personal favorite for the majority of their career. It still blows my mind that they were only like 16~18 here??? It's wild. Even Key sounds amazing and he was meant to be a rapper lol. SM has the best vocal coaches in the industry, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. In any SM group, every member can hold their own. But not every group can harmonize like SHINee can. SHINee takes after TVXQ in that way. TVXQ were the kings of acapella back in the day, and SHINee's acapella is right up there for sure.

Love this reaction! SHINee's ballads always make me sad and warm inside at the same time. Other comments mentioned this but YES Onew has covered some opera songs in the past. He did release his solo album Voice in 2018 before joining the military and it is all ballads! I think you would really like his title song Blue, a super strong ballad that showcases Onew's vocals beautifully. SHINee just has so many beautiful songs together and individually its really exciting to get to see you discover them!

monks. Two months after jonghyuns passing shinee performed a song called from now on at there first concert without him. They left jonghyun voice in the song. Four boys with 5 microphones tears and struggles. This was one of the most passionate and emotional songs I have ever seen. The boys really were hurting and had a hard time doing this. That same night they performed diamond in the sky while playing a video of jonghyun. During this performance mingo screamed out jonghyun name and cried. This is very emotional for everyone but it allows your journey with shinee to see the good and the sad and what this group has had to go through. You may appreciate there music and performance even deeper. Thank you so much for your great reaction and allowing us to be apart of your monq squad. This song is pure nostalgia for me. When I became their fan in '09, this performance was fairly new. They hypnotized me with harmonies and vulnerability. If you're planning to do more Jonghyun reactions, I highly recommend his live version of Nothing Better (first vid that comes up is the best version). Aurora is my fav of his solo work. Shinee will always have a special place in my heart, as well as TVXQ and Super Junior. New groups just don't cut it for me. Thank you for this series. Subscribed.

Hey Monq! I had no idea until I watched your review that only Onew, Jonghyun and Key sang this song! I thought Minho and Taemin sung it too! It sounded like all 5 of them sung it! That just goes to show how very talented SHINee as a group and how gifted each member is individually. This song reminds me of a Babyface joint too. The rhythmic flow of it is soothing yet sensual and seductive and their voices are perfectly pitched throughout the song. They should have a disclaimer on it saying “this is baby-making music; listen at your own risk” 😂. I’m from old-school r&b and if I didn’t know it was SHINee and it was being sung in English, I would be like Babyface has another smooth joint hit. Onew, Jonghyun and Key did a very good job here. And how their harmonizing made it sound like it was all 5 of them singing astounds me. Thanks, Monq, for reviewing this song. They were awesome 😎

At start, Minho and Taemin wasn’t singing much yet.. they all grew so much over years. Each of the SHINee Members’ timbres.. voice colors are beautiful. Each distinct to the other. Other than their skills, techniques.. it’s their distinctly beautiful voice colors w/c gives their songs that intricate SHINee touch, those beautiful harmonies.

You should check out Shinee's "Romantic" its also an r&b track from them & its one of my favorite songs :) I think this is one of their underrated songs cuz I dont hear a lot of people talk about this song anymore (or maybe I'm just not looking enough lol) and also you should check out TVXQ, an older boy group from the early 2000s & they came from the same company as EXO, NCT, Shinee & Super Junior. They've got REALLY good vocalists & their harmonies are so great. Some songs i would recommend are "The Way U Are", "Spellbound", "Tonight", "My Little Princess", "Hey Girl", "Million Men", & "Before U Go''

Oh, but this song destroys me every single time I hear it. The harmonies their voices create and their ad libs are what I love in SHINee music and what makes this discography the best imho. And to think they were at the beginning of their career when they sang this song! I’m not much for ballads and slow songs, they often bore me especially when they’re written in major scale, but with SHINee? I’m completely in love with their ballads, both Korean and Japanese. About Tokyo Dome performances, they’re amazing, someone gave you good advice to watch them. I’ve reacted to quite a few of TD clips and didn’t have any major problems, so it should be ok for you to react to them, especially if you tweak video a little using filters. Try also SBS Inkigayo for older songs, they’re mostly safe to react to as well.

Thank you so much for your reaction to songs that normally aren't covered by reactors. Ballad SHINee is, like all of their songs, on another level. Don't sleep on Key - he has a stunning voice. Check out One of Those Nights! And just a little note on pronunciation (no shade, I totally used to say the same way): 'o' on Korean is pure o, rather than the English 'ah'. English has slide-y vowels, Korean does not. So Onew, instead of Ah-new, is pronounced Oh-new - as if you were sounding out the alphabet. Same with Jonghyun. Speaking of alphabets, Hangul only takes an hour to learn...you won't understand the words, but you'll be able to read them! ♥ (I still get mixed up all the time, I'm just a beginner XD Also bless King Sejong forever for creating Hangul)

I feel like I need to defend Taemin & Minho on this track. They ARE there. But you have to know where. Minho and Taemin are layered on top for different lines of the chorus. 6:56 = Minho (nae bange itneun modeun geotdeuli, neol geuriweohanabwa) & 7:03 = Taemin (neol wihae chatda jichyeoseo, neol jamshi ijeodo). Those two lines for all the choruses are Minho & Taemin's respective parts on the recording. They get layered with Jonghyun a lot but those are their lines. Also Jonghyun didn't write "In My Room". It was David Kater, Kim Tae-sung, & Kim Young-hoo. You can find that kind of info on Wikipedia on the individual album pages. Shawols are serious about updating those credits regularly. :) And Onew HAS sung opera before in a SHINee concert! You should hear his version of "Nessun Dorma"!

@@MONQTV For the album recordings, there's always a lot of layering. They'll do a lot of takes of Jonghyun's voice and overlap it a few times. Generally that's how SHINee's tracks are. For the live video... I'm pretty confident they sang over a backing track because I can hear Jonghyun's voice in the chorus backup vocals when he's clearly singing a different line. And that's pretty common in k-pop. It's very rare for a performance to be 100% live - which makes the times they are 100% really special. There's usually a backing track to assist with some extra harmonies during live performances like that performance of "In My Room". Personally I don't mind because I like that it has that fuller sound.

Funny fact: SHINee sings live because they can't lip sync. They tried early on in career, but it was too obvious. Early SHINee, Onew, Key, and Jonghyun did majority of lines. Minho did mostly rapping. Taemin had very little lines.

Also Taemin and Minho had lines but it was little and it was layered with Jonghyun; the thing is minho and taemin vocals weren’t that much developed when they debuted so they didn’t have much lines at the start and when they did it was either layered with another member vocals or just in background or so little; they both developed vocally so much through the years and got more lines as years come. You mentioned opera when it comes to Onew’s vocals and he really does have that type of voice. Fun fact; while Onew never trained opera or anything close to that he likes opera songs and covered nessun dorma at their concerts before; though the first time he covered that song early days while it was good he sang it in a way that ended up hurting his vocals a bit but later on when he covered it again at 2016 he did it with better vocal techniques and just overall had better control over it, it was amazing.

MONQ TV no he didn’t write the song at all. it was one of their first songs, albums, first year as a group and usually most idols don’t have self written songs in those albums unless it’s rap-hiphop based group. He debuted as a writer when he wrote the korean lyrics for Juliette and later on he co-wrote lyrics in later album. His first song he wrote entirely for shinee is called obsession for ‘lucifer’ album with Minho writing the rap parts himself. This too leads to another fact that many seem to not mention it but minho wrote his parts in big number of shinee songs

Oh no Like I was saying in the love I did, that I don't feel right doing that and some people are too young to be able to pay so my wife created a website SPECIFICALLY for that.
