Thank you for doing this and thanks to the ones who suggested the videos. Both "Evil" and "Nightmare" are two of my favorite SHINee performances. This is the thing with me and SHINee, I'm close (as in very) to being 60, so I grew up listening to the likes of Elvis, Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones, Queen and the Beetles to name just a few, is that they never cease to amaze me. That, to me was music. I grew jaded through that music. As I grew older, Western music became less enjoyable, rather it became more predictable and boring. Then my youngest daughter (who I had in my late 30s) introduced me to Kpop through BTS because I would catch her sneaking their MVs when during homeschool time. It was new and different, and I really liked it. I became somewhat of a fan and listened to all their music up through "Persona". However, then she turned me on to Taemin. My mind was BLOWN. He is truly unique. I fell in LOVE with his dancing, voice, and music instantly. I stopped listening to BTS completely. Through Taemin, I discovered SHINee. That was all she wrote. I never looked back. Now, the only Kpop groups/soloists I listen to are SHINee and SuperM (because of Taemin). There is nothing wrong with other groups/artists, it's just that SHINee reminds me of those long-ago days when I was so excited about and addicted to music. However, here's the thing. Learning everything I did about SHINee and how they advanced Kpop through the trends they started, their insane vocal and performance abilities, and the fact they were the first Kpop group ever to play in London, why was it BTS everyone went gaga over? Seriously, I didn't understand (Keep in mind I cite BTS because that's the only other group I knew at the time). SHINee was doing world concerts before BTS ever existed. Then it hit me. #1) The world wide web and younger generations' fascination with it made it easier to access Kpop more easily. #2) BigHit's marketing had the vision to exploit that tool - the INTERNET and aggressively market BTS whereas SM is still stuck in the middle ages when it comes to marketing their artists. #3) When BTS debuted (2013) SHINee had already been on the scene for five years and had an older fan-base. Many of their fans were in college or upper high school and getting ready for college. Other priorities, like life-plans, were in the forefront. They were maturing -- still fans of SHINee -- but less time to fan-girl or fan-boy at every moment. Other than poor marketing on the part of SM, it was no one's fault that SHINee missed the emerging internet opportunities that expanded such a diverse world. I take comfort in the fact that SHINee, through their innovative trends and constant experimentation, transformed Kpop into what it is today. Although there are MANY SHINee trends that propelled that transformation, the two biggest are #1) SHINee started the trend of singing live while performing right from the beginning, something unheard of prior to SHINee, where lip-synching to songs was the norm. Even today, their live performances are 90-95% live vocals while dancing. #2) They are the ones who, through their constant need for perfection and innovation demanded more from their choreographies (thanks in large part to Taemin) and started the trend of more complex, extremely synchronized choreos. Once SHINee debuted, EVERYONE in Kpop started to do these two things just to keep pace. Therefore, I'm a proud SHAWOL and enormously proud of SHINee's standing in the Kpop world. They may not be recognized by the Blue House as the "ambassadors" of S. Korea, but they are certainly recognized by their life-long fans and the industry as the standard (known as the "SHINee Standard") for success in Kpop across company lines. This is also reflected in the fact that SHINee is the most revered and respected group in the industry, are known as the "Princes of Kpop" and kindest group out there, and acknowledged by a plethora of Kpop groups and artists who cite them as their idols and the reason why they got into Kpop in the first place. This is the biggest compliment any group could attain. The crazy part? They are still going strong, both as a group and soloists, still love each other as family, and are still creating new trends and beautiful music. Their legacy will last as long into the future and that's saying something.

Such an interesting comment! And so relatable: like you I grew up with the Stones and the Beatles and Bob Dylan and music was exciting back then, but I'd been mostly bored with music for decades until I tried kpop last year and music came alive again. Taemin was big on my playlist, but it wasn't until I found Jonghyun's solo stuff that I was utterly lost (or found :-)), then quickly learned enough about Shinee and the members to be blown away on all fronts and compelled to become a shawol (I've appreciated many singers and bands, but who Shinee is and what they can do turned me an honest-to-god *fan* of a group for the first time in my life).

When you talked about "cute gore", you were so right. While promoting his latest solo comeback with Gasoline, Key, one of the SHINee members, used a slogan "How to be scary and cute" in his teasers etc. His mood sampler also had this campy, fun, old horror vibe, as the Married to the Music MV. Onew's Dice MV also had many similarities with MTTM. They like coming back to this aesthetic :)

Thanks so much for reacting to SHINee! They’re my ult group and Taemin is my ult of ults. Part of the reason I fell in love with all of the boys because they seem like genuinely amazing humans with beautiful relationships with each other, so I think a guide would be great! And, as you’ve seen, their talent is out of this world. Since they’ve got such a huge discography, they’ve got something for everyone! I think a lot of people write them off because they’re 2nd gen and not still relevant, so it’s always great to see reactors diving in and discovering all their facets!

What you just experienced with SHINee's "Evil" performance is why they are referred to as CDnee or CD-eaters because SHINee live is 300 times better than their studio recordings. SHINee live is on a whole other level. This performance at SHINee's SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul in 2014, just proves why they are legends. And this was only the opening set of songs, just imagine what the whole concert was like. Right before "Evil" they perform their song "Spoiler" and then after this, without even pausing, as you saw, they perform "Nightmare," "Juliette" and then "Lucifer." And when they interact with the audience immediately after they don't even sound out of breath. They are icons for a reason and they have been doing it to that high of standard since debut. Even when SHINee were rookies, senior artists would stop what they were doing to watch SHINee rehearse on music programs because no one was singing live and pulling off extremely complex choreography flawlessly the way SHINee was doing it. SHINee sets the standard every time they step on stage and other artists are just trying to keep up. They are Idols' Idols and legends among legends. If you ask almost anyone in the industry today why they wanted to become a singer or dancer or what groups or artists they look up to, they will probably put SHINee in their top 3 or higher. Fun fact: SHINee were actually blind during that part of their "Evil" performance. I saw some behind the scenes footage once from a documentary of one of SHINee's concerts where a backup dancer or staff member actually took the blindfold and held it up to a light in front of the camera to show us that you can't see through it. SHINee are just that good, that they make it look like being blindfolded and dancing in sync is easy. :D You should really check out this full concert sometime. You will be even more floored when you see a full concert from beginning to end. Individual performances are impressive, but once you see the amount of energy they put into a whole concert you will be amazed, kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKPZaa2eqLerd7s. They only get more impressive as the concert goes on. Their vocal quality never wavers and they maintain this same energy and stamina from beginning to end.

Yay! I've been waiting for this Shinee binge. I knew you'd love the Married to the music MV. It's so weird and unexpected! The live performances truly blow me away and their always singing live does really put them on a higher level. They're all equally talented. Onew may not be an operatic singer but, as an Italian, I can say his pronunciation was perfect and his performance so respectful of the Nessun dorma aria. I'm a recent listener but they impress me more and more each time I watch

Wow, yes, you're correct. In SHINee's "Married to the Music" MV the girl in the wedding dress was collecting the best body parts from each of the members to create her ideal man. She burned Minho's head because what she wanted was his body. She used fire because Minho's nickname is "Flaming Charisma" because of his passion for life and sports and his need to always win. Minho has the best body of the group so, she took Minho's body, Key's head, Onew's nose, Taemin's eyes and Jonghyun's lips (for obvious reasons. LOL). Then at the end she spliced them all together and formed her perfect guy. If you notice, in the end credits you see a person that has been created from all of the members' body parts, which is supposed to be the guy the girl created. In other words, music is a very fickle girl and she controls your life by picking and choosing the best parts and mashes them together to create the perfect song. LOL. In SHINee's iconic SM museum archives you can even see the rubber eyes, nose and lips, etc. that were created from molds of the members actual body parts and used as props in this MV. We now know where Key gets his sassy personality from because we discover he is full of lemons. And when she takes Onew's nose we see Onew's blood is orange like nacho cheese because he is known for his cheesy jokes, as the "old man" of the group, etc. LOL. Their outfits and hair are supposed to look like they are dressed for a retro Halloween party. There isn't a dance practice for this song, but if you want to see the choreography better you should watch the performance version MV and/or a live comeback stage. There is a lot more to this dance than what you see in the MV. And if you check out their comeback stages you will see their bow ties look like bats and some of their hats have witches fingers, etc. (Everytime they performed this song on music shows their outfits are different, so it's worth checking out more than one performance to see just how fun their outfits and stages were.) Everything's supposed to have that fun, campy horror/comedy look and feel. You should see the behind the scenes footage of them filming the MV, kzbin.info/www/bejne/i53clIWfh8mDrcU. This will give you an even better look at just how much detail and work went into everything to do with "Married to the Music" and why it's such an iconic song. SHINee's "Married to the Music" was released in 2015 and it's supposed to be fun and upbeat, because they are "Married to the Music." The MV has a very "Rocky Horror Picture Show" vibe, and it's just about as iconic of a cult classic as that movie as well. "Married to the Music" is considered a Halloween must watch within the fandom and most of us make this MV part of our Halloween tradition every year. However, this song and MV came out in August, nowhere near Halloween. Halloween isn't really a big deal in Korea and it has only been in the last few years that Koreans have started to celebrate Halloween by holding costume parties. Halloween in Korea is pretty much a western culture transplant. But, the middle of summer is horror season in Korea. Koreans say they like to watch scary movies and shows in the summer because it gives them chills which cools them down when it is hot. So, that's probably why they came up with this concept for "Married to the Music" as an August comeback theme. SHINee really are one of the most iconic and influential groups. They are always setting trends, never following them. SHINee were designed to be SM Entertainment's experimental boy group, so everything they do is meant to be the first and they are expected to come up with a style and sound that has never been done before. And yet it still always ends up feeling and sounding like SHINee. SHINee has started the trend with almost everything, there is almost nothing that can't be attributed to something SHINee has been involved in. With every new song SHINee produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will NEVER hear the same style or sound from them in any of their songs, even on the same album. The industry looks to SHINee to show them what the next song style and dance trend will be. And it is said that within 3 months of SHINee releasing their new song and choreography, you will see that same sound and style being duplicated across the industry with every comeback to follow from both boy groups and girl groups. When SHINee does something the industry takes note and follows suit. Case in point, SHINee is known as one of the very first groups to ever dress up in full costume for Halloween. They first did it for a fan meeting in 2013 and then they decided to show up to SM's annual company dinner in costume. Which is what gave Lee SooMan (the founder of SM) the idea to hold a costume party. Now SM is known for holding one of the largest costume parties every year. (The event is like the Met Gala of Halloween parties, and is usually attended by some of the biggest name celebrities in Korea.) As part of the party there is a costume contest and, in the past, the person with the best costume has won an all expenses paid vacation trip. (SM Entertainment members are known for being some of the most competitive. They are the ones who go all out when it comes to dressing up -- always trying to outdo each other. So it's a pretty steep competition among the top contenders every year. And each year they have to come up with something better than what anyone did the year before.) Key is very competitive when it comes to fashion, costumes included, and the last time he attended the Halloween party in 2018 he won. He came as Voldemort from Harry Potter. He hired a team of famous TV and movie makeup artists to make him look like the real character. Check out kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIbWea2OiJtpd9k to see just how amazing his costume really was. And in 2021 -- which was the first year the SHINee members were able to attend since the pandemic cancelled the event the previous year, and this was the first year since Onew, Key and Minho were discharged -- Onew kept the tradition going. Onew dressed up as The Penguin from Batman for SM's Halloween House Party, and he received the award for best dressed. You have to see how spoton his costume was as well, kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKqvoniieJinZrM. SHINee are the reason why Kpop groups and artists now dress up in costume and film special dance practice videos or do special things, etc. for Halloween. SHINee are such influencers that, one year when Key dressed up like Ronald McDonald from McDonald's and Onew was Colonel Sanders from Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), they created such a buzz and went viral worldwide that Key says McDonald's sent him a giant stack of coupons for free meals as a thank you for the advertising.

In the Married to the music MV, the girl is taking parts of each one of their bodies to build "the perfect man" you can actually see the guy she built at the end during the credits. I believe the lemon inside Key's head is probably where his sass comes from? 😁

I've seen it before and i learned a lot. BTS seemed to have taken a lot of cues from Shinee. They also do live vocals, and dance practices. BTS also inspired the younger generation to become idols. I think it's sweet. BTS created holiday dance practices. They showed how cool it was to have a lot of backup dancers on every stage. So that became a trend. They learned a lot from Shinee and did their own thing too. I love that. =0)
