Excellent tutorial and a pleasure to watch. The radius of the stretch not only makes it look good, because of the tilt of the bricks gravity will always push them together, which makes it all possible. Self-supporting structures are one of the most fantastic things in brickwork IMO.

Plenty of excellent bricklayers in North America. I think what your saying is more of a social commentary about the bar sliding all over the world in almost any facet. I've worked with bricklayers from all over the world...some acceptional, some complete chancers

I would have a slightly more conspiratorial explanation in which I believe this is all being made to happen and there's no difference between the left and right, it's the illusion of choice. The raking out is usually only a temporary thing in Holland and the Dutch part of Belgium .the brick work will be repointed as part of the build in a colour of the owners choice.
