I've always had this naive concept that Manga artists (or any person good at drawing) would be able to draw anything from the top of their head. After watching this, i realised that they actually keep a ton a reference material and use it as much as possible. The dedication and amount of work that goes into each page is dumbfounding, the fact that people usually read through them in like 10 seconds it's just criminal.
@batataComPolvo6 жыл бұрын
You should check out the berserk chapter wher ethe author talks. He has so much material around himself because he tries to get inspired by what older artists got inspired on. Going to the roots takes a ton of hard work and you need a lot of material expecially when making something that is realistic or makes sense.

There's a documentary somewhere on YT that covers the professional and personal life (or lack there of) of a famous manga artist(mb its even on this channel). To cut a long story short: As per tradition, in a hyper-competitive market the Japanese workers are kinda expected to hyper-achieve at the job, whatever that job may be. So, for literal decades he sacrificed any semblance of a life outside THE WORK. Demonstrating almost inhuman levels of dedication & iron-like discipline, he somehow managed to do THE WORK for as long as he did... until one day he could NO MORE. He came to hate the one thing he ever loved, and was passionate about, his artistic process, his art. Burn-Out - they call it. And as I understand it, it's not a very uncommon occurrence in the Big-Manga-Industry,. p.s. by the end of the film I was left feeling depressed and inspired at the same time, it was weird. 10/10 highly recommended p.p.s. sorry but nope. can't recall the title nor the name of the Artist, i tryed...

From my observations and experiences, there are 3 types of professional artists: 1. An artist who, after coming up with a composition themselves, takes their own photography(or works straight from a live model) and copies in major details from those photos into the final pieces. 2. An artist who literally only *refers* to their references to help them remember the parts or characteristics of whatever they are drawing without copying anything in directly(e.g. pulling up medical images to remember how many ribs there are for their undead skeleton warrior). 3. An artist who studies thoroughly anything they intend to draw, but almost never has reference open while drawing. There is a 4th type, but I consider them more designers than artists per se since the art is not the product for the consumption of the general public, and that is concept artists who photo bash or paint over 3D. This type of work has extremely tight deadlines, and the "art" is only meant to help the rest of the team build the real final product, i.e. video games and films.

More Than a Miracle The queen of Sheba will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here-but you refuse to listen. -Matthew 12:42- Have you ever thought that if you could do a miracle, then your non-Christian friends would believe? If that is what it would take, then God would do it. The religious leaders asked Jesus for a miraculous sign, but He told them, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights” Matthew 12:39-40) At the same time Jesus refused a sign, He promised a sign. He refused the sign they wanted, which would have had no effect on them. But He promised the only sign that could truly impact and change them. Jesus was telling them, “Someone greater than Jonah is here. And I’m offering forgiveness.” While Jonah came preaching God’s judgment, Jesus came preaching God’s mercy and grace. Jonah was disobedient, but Jesus was obedient. Jonah preached to one city, but Jesus came for the entire world. Then Jesus continued, “The queen of Sheba will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here-but you refuse to listen” (verse 42) The queen of Sheba was not Jewish, but she came to Jerusalem seeking the wisdom of the great King Solomon. She made a grueling 1,200-mile journey to hear what he had to say, because she desperately wanted to hear truth. In essence Jesus was saying, “You should know better than to ask for a sign. You should know what is true and what is right.” We can’t help but draw a parallel to our own nation. We should know better. Our country was built on biblical precepts. The first book in our public school system was the Bible. Our laws were based on biblical principles. But today we can’t even post the Ten Commandments in a classroom. As we see anarchy in the streets and violence spreading across our society, people are crying out for a return to family values. But we need more than family values; we need the morality those values are based on. And then we need the spirituality that morality is based on. We can’t have morality without spirituality, because who determines what is moral and immoral? We must have a set of standards, and we find them in the pages of Scripture. Jesus was saying to the religious leaders, “So you want a sign? Here it is. I’m going to die on the cross and rise from the dead. That is your sign.” The sign our unbelieving friends and family need to know about is that Jesus died on the cross for them and rose from the dead. This is what we need to proclaim. It’s the greatest sign of all

I've always had a dream about making my own manga when I was a 16 year old high-school girl. And suddenly before I even start, I gave up. Cause I instantly realized that I wasn't enough. I mean not "good" enough. I was just not enough by myself. I had no cultural experience, drawing experience, any anatomy knowledge or any ability to keep the story moving on. So, I'm now 20 year old college girl and I still want to create that manga that I've dreamt of. Still, I struggle with all the thing I've said before. But now, I'm starting to figure out how to solve them. Basically, by walking right through them. If I can't draw faces from different angles, then I need references. If I can't design a room for my main character, then I need references. Always use references, If you need then copy it! It's always for your improvement. From my eyes and the people from the comment section's eyes, he seems like a person who is fullfilled with everything. He can draw, he can use his imagination and he uses his creativity for his storylines. But he always seeks inspiration and always uses references, maybe less than before. But he still uses them. My Art teacher in college passed away 3 months ago. He was that kind of person who was loved by everyone. Who was respected and his lessons were saving our lives. He always said us to "COPY! DON'T BE ASHAMED OF, COPY UNTIL YOU LEARN IT! IF YOU NEED THOUSAND TIMES TO LEARN IT THEN JUST DO IT FOR THOUSAND TIMES! COPY TILL YOU DON'T NEED." It was his perspective about references. Sakamoto-sensei reminded me of him. I really miss you Faruk Atalayer. You will always be loved and never be forgotten.

As an aspiring comic artist around that age, I feel that. I too gave up before I even started for years because of those same insecurities. I'd mask them with the delusion that drawing is really just a hobby to me, just a way to kill time every now then. That's why I don't have to try, that's why it shouldn't hurt when the things I make don't measure up to my standards. At some point I had to realize that there's nothing that scares me more than art, because there's nothing I love more than art. I put it away during some of the worst times of my life and I only ever got out of them once I picked up my pencils and brushes again. I dropped out of college last year to pursue my art (in whichever ways it manifests) and while I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, I don't regret it for a second. I'm no longer worried for my art itself so much, I've still got long ways to go but ever since I took it seriously and found my learning style, I'm confident in my ability to improve. The one lingering insecurity is that of lacking life experience for which I feel like there's only so much I can do so quickly. But to keep this short and sweet, I've concluded that no matter how grand and intricate some of the stories I want to tell are, it's best to start off small and focused in order to do them justice. For example, there are two of my projects that I can see myself realistically starting off with; one is a little comic with short chapters intimately focused on two characters and their psychology/interactions. My hope is that it will familiarize me with the creative process in a beginner-friendly, easily-manageable small scale; writing characters- keeping track of their motivations and dynamics- and the technical aspects of it- its visual direction, panel layout etc. Once I start with that and feel a little more confident in myself, I plan to write a short series, hoping it will be thematically simple, yet effective. I have very limited experience in pretty much everything, so in order to write something with emotional honesty behind it I decided to begin by writing about something that concerns me personally. I've been thinking a lot about being an adult and growing up and while I don't have all the answers yet, I'd like to explore that through a surrealistic coming of age story with otherworldly visuals. And move from there to telling increasingly more complex and ambitious stories in terms of character, plot, themes etc. Point is, hold onto that manga you want to create but probably work your way up to it one step at the time. It's the one thing I can come up with to combat my fear that I will irrevocably screw over my stories with poor execution due to my lack of experience, even though I think they are great in concept. I'm a firm believer that there's no any one correct way of creating though, so this is just a suggestion should you find any value in it. Best of luck!

I know that referencing is important when I first learned the basic "rules" in drawing, but till this day I'm scared to copy because I feel bad that I can't make something originally and when I see an Art of somebody else (and knowing where the reference that came from), I thought "that's cheating..." I'm so insecure deep inside that I can't be like them who can just copy stuff and learn from it. I can't. That's why I'm thankful to you because you're the only one who made me feel at ease about using references. I've seen Hirohiko Araki and Miura Kentaro do this and yet I still feel conflicted about copying something and making it on your own. It never felt right for me... so thank you very much, you've eased my soul about "copying". I guess i'm really slow to adapt and needs an emotional impact to get it through my anxiety. You've changed me, I'll go back to drawing and this time- to improve, like really move forward in art. Thank you for sharing your story about being a mangaka ( ◜‿◝ )♡ I finally broke the chains that's holding me down... my anxiety lessened a whole lot after knowing you ^^

Anyway I wish all kinds of art creators once would make more cheerful stuff because we know that we're all gonna die and life on this planet becomes more tough each year so it's not necessary to always remind the humanity about its mortality... we just need more happy memories.

I rarely ever see a manga through to the end, but Sakamoto's words at the end had me wondering which stories I've remembered... which truly stayed with me even after they were finished, or perhaps I remembered the events of previous chapters for ongoing weekly series. And I notice that is narrow. But there's something about manga with outlandishly beautiful art that draws me in... stories like I Am A Hero and One Punch Man keep my face glued to the page, allowing me to appreciate the art and feel chills with every page turn. I may have to check out Sakamoto's works now, his philosophy on his manga sounds like my style. Beautiful video.

WOOOW! Already one of my favorite episodes by far!! Sakamoto-sensei is an AMAZING mangaka and you can really feel his passion and devotion toward his work, which makes me admire him even more. His linework is so flawless and precise, as well as his approach on his pieces. The way he carefully thinks about the development of the history and his respect for it is so mind blowing. Thank you so much for this, Archipel - as always delivering such great content, beatifully filmed. Definitely one of the best channels on youtube, in my opinion. Greeting from Brazil ^^

Kokou no Hito is one of the best stories I've read. It's interesting that he took over the writing after volume 3 was released, and if you compare the manga before the previous writer left, there's a huge difference in quality. I think he's likely the best mangaka in terms of art AND storytelling.

The climber literally changed my life and my standards for mangas. I now find imposdible to read any other manga after being exposed to such a luxurious beauty and deepness such as the climber and real. Those two mangas keep circulating in my mind for both their stories, art but mostly cause of their deepness. From now on will be impossible enjoying other mangas, after have read those it will really be impossible appreciate others manga like I used to do before, now they don't seem "enough" to me anymore.. The climber and real really bewitched me. The climber made me realize how strong is my desire to create such powerful illustrations that can suck up the viewers the same way those in that manga sucked me up several times during my reading. Thank you for have created such a wonderful philosophical work of art, really really thank you.

I’ve always admired his work, I love his passion and his art style, it’s relatively similar to mine, because I too love realism and western renaissance/rococo/ Victorian styles of clothings, many times I used his shading styles for reference, it was really tough, because his style is very delicate, in order to achieve that delicate effect you have to work on the piece for hours and sometimes perhaps a few days just to complete a page.He is one of my most respected mangakas, truly a master.

Art is such a beautiful thing, simply because it only expresses what goes on through our heads, so it is a personal way of understanding what someone is truly thinking and what someone can feel. I feel so blessed and honored to have been able to watch this intimate evaluation of an incredible Manga artist, as most interviews only scratch what's on the surface instead of observing the grand symphony behind it. I'm an artist myself, and eachday I find my heart to be more in love with what this world has to offer than yesterday. It's these mysterious complexities, and contrasting interpretations that make our existence one of a kind. Thank you for sharing his story, so that common people like me can see, how extraordinary our time here on Earth is. And these tender gifts are what transcends many lifetimes unimaginable.
