I study Toyama Ryu, which is my understanding Shinkendo is based off of. The katas that Sensei Obata teaches are the ones that we learn. I live in the United States and would love to go to one of his seminars.

I hope they actually spar. Otherwise, all the development they mention is theoretical.

We do sometimes. But the amount of sparring changes dojo to dojo. There are places where they don't spar at all. In some places there is light sparting without protective gear, this means full spead, but you cannot finnish the attack if you see it will land. And it is restricted in the number of exchanges. Occasionally we use light gear and padded weapons. We only aren't allowed to thrust to the throat or face. Usually they don't tell you right away if they do spar or not, becouse beginners aren't allowed to do it anyway. So it depends on the dojo.
