That's a great plan. They grow so vertical you'll have plenty of opportunity to make them look like a single tree.

These are a solid option for us out here in AZ. Their biggest advantage is the dense foliage that helps the fruit get through the summer heat and sun.

I always found all pear trees are kind of an upright narrow tree. My parents had a regular pear tree that was 20 years old and it was about 15 feet but only about 4-5 feet across.

Garry, we're finding the same thing with our 3 pear varieties. These 2 asian pears and also a seckel pear that hasn't produced yet. Very narrow/tall trees. How well did your parents tree produce?

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm niceeee God to hear, 🍒 are hard to grow here cause if the clay soil, after 2 faul set of trees i plant them in a mound and put logs to hold the dirt and they finally made it 2 years old now, heavy rain un the spring for days, but this trick work. Nei need another Asian 🍐 😆

I have a Shinseiki and 20th Century but since the Shinseiki is currently having powdery mildew (with flowers), I was thinking of only planting the 20th Century since it’s supposed to be a self pollinating tree. Do you think that’s a good idea or should I continue to spray the copper fungi spray?

The 20th Century is a consistent producer for us and we're not fans of having to spray trees, so I would lean towards focusing on the 20th Century.

I don't really care for the asian pear I bought 2 pear tree's a few year's ago thinking I had just regular pears but 1 was mismarked obviously and after eating the asian I just was disappointed! I guess it's because they aren't like a Bartlett but it's here and I'll make the best of it. Thanks for showing, you always have great information.

Hey Cathie. I can see why you would be disappointed. They definitely do not have a typical pear flavor. We actually use these for juicing in place of apples and they do just fine. Then again, its mixed with other juices, so we're really not tasting it either!

I'm not familiar with Babugosa pear, but our trees here survive 120 (F) degree summers and 20 (F) degree winters quite well.

I'm guessing it's a lack of solid chill hours. This year we had fruit set on all of our pear trees, but none the last 2 with far fewer chill hours.

I live in Central Florida zone 9B. is it possible for these pear tree to bear fruit in a zone with such low chill hours? what zone are you in?

Great question Binh. We're in the same zone (9B) as you are, so you should be fine. We're a bit outside of the city where chill hours are a bit higher, but these are grown in the city as well and they only get a couple hundred chill hours max.

I'm living in MN ( zone 4 B ). I got some Asian pear trees. I watched a lot of clips about pruning . I'm confusing about that. What's different between summer pruning and winter pruning ? which one for more fruit and which one for shape. I have some Asian pear. Central leader or vase which shape is the best for them ?

These are really good questions Duc. For pruning, you'll want to mainly winter prune these trees for production as they use fruiting spurs to fruit. Cutting back top growth to encourage fruiting is typically done in the winter, but you can do some size control pruning in the summer as needed depending on how aggressively they grow. We have used open center shape for these and have seen good success, but they can be grown either way. On the new farm we're going to use Central Leader as we have issues with too much summer sun, but that shouldn't be an issue for you up in MN!

Is asian pear is frost resistance? How can someone prune pear tree specially if he want tall tree for space saving and more tree ? Because tree like mango and guava -- if you pruned it will be more vigorous but dwarf ..

Hey there Avijit. Pear trees will naturally grow very vertical, so it would simply be a matter of either leaving it to grow with a central leader (tall and thinner), or topping the tree when it's very young and growing it more like a large bush. Asian pears need chill hours (below 45 degrees F) in order to produce fruit, so they do well with chilly winters.

Yes, we have 2 of them and they grow just fine and set fruit. The challenge with them is the same for all Fall ripening fruit. They have yet to survive a summer. Now, our trees are only 4 years in the ground, so we're hopeful that changes as they continue to mature.

@@keningram2781 as with pretty much all of the fruit trees, they go "semi-dormant" during the heat of summer and the fruit tends to suffer from that. The main issue is bird pressure, so you would need to protect the fruit for several months. We've tried organza bags, but over that much time the birds figure it out and get through them. They are self fruitful, so no need to have a cross.

Yes, all of our fruit trees (including Asian Pears) are in full sun and we're just outside of the Phoenix area with similar temps.

We fertilize 3X/year. In February, May and September with either composted pig manure or chicken manure.

@@hungrybilly1955 We've been able to produce enough of our own to keep it "In house" for the last couple of years. We did a video on fertilizing where we discussed different options and in my opinion you can really choose any fertilizer that fits your budget. We prefer organic, but as long as you're sticking to a schedule you should be fine. We've used BioFlora Crumbles and even Arizona's Best conventional with good success in the past. Summer Winds carries the BioFlora and Arizona's Best is available just about everywhere.
