Yep. It's the scariest area in Bloodborne for me, and probably in all their games. It's the music combined with being able to hear the brainsuckers while not being able to see them that freaks me out. I ended up just basically bulldozing my way through the area to clear it as quickly as possible. It took a bit for me to work up the nerve though, because I'm really a coward with scary stuff. I've been putting off doing the Abyssal Woods for much the same reason. I more hate the the Winter Lantern knock-offs don't sing like the Bloodborne ones do, so I know I'm just going to stumble across them even when I'm trying to be careful.

Hypogean Gaol, specifically during the red moon phase, heavily implies some real sinister sh*t. The choir that you hear isn't just ambient sound. It gets louder or softer depending on how close you are to the building. This is what your character is hearing *in-game* The choir is part of the ritual that summons The One Reborn.

Its funny; I think Latria still sticks out to me the most, mainly because its SO different from the rest of the areas in Demon's Souls. Shout out to Vanilla Aldia's Manor, and its spooky Bone Dragon moment lol
@ColesignАй бұрын
There's also how the Tower of Latria dungeon in Demon's Souls had a huge influence on a lot of the spooky areas in future Souls games. Wandering mind-flayer enemies with paralyzing attacks, heaps of corpses amalgamated into spherical horrors, a giant mass of flesh you have to drop into a pit, etc.
@MsKementariАй бұрын
Personally I would add two places: 1) Upper road to Volcano Manor, where military clashes took place. It is depressing, and, I don't know the right adjective in English. "Удручающее место" 2) Finger ruins. Uncanny, "not-earth" place that makes you vomit. Latria on PS5 looks very beautiful, until you don't go on to the foundations of the towers.

@SolaScientiaАй бұрын
Yeah, that's pretty freaky. It's not too bad once you know there aren't any enemies around, but if you don't know that then it's really bad. The light glinting off the Brain of Mensis makes it pretty freaky too. I ended up feeling really bad for it though. Even knowing there's nothing else down there, I was still a bit nervous when I did the gesture to get the rune it drops. Holding it a fully minute is about 45 seconds too long.
@pedimpedimpedimАй бұрын
@ for sure. It’s the whole situation that fills me with dread. Wandering in the dark to find the blob staring at you is spooky, but then it hits that this poor sack will be left alone in the void forever handing out runes to the few who dare to visit… it’s just sad :)

All the instances of rain I've found were in the edges to the eastern side of the map. Do you know of any different ones? Because my theory is that it might be water from the nearby sea, as the Abyssal woods are strangely way under the waterline, which is also a rather unnerving thought.

Same. I noped out of there so fast after I killed those werewolves when they fell on the chandelier (I did laugh my ass off when it happened as I ran to the doorway to cheese them). It was silent except for the music and the noises of the brainsuckers waiting for me behind the walls. I saved and quit out so fast. I knew about the one that breaks through the window, but I didn't remember the timing. I went to the window and was surprised when it didn't ambush me. Then cue me about dying of fright when it leapt through the window after I'd turned my back to walk away. About pissed myself before I wailed on it when the saw cleaver until it was no longer a problem.

When I first got there I was fully freaked out. I took care of the werewolves that fell on chandelier and the one already on the floor when it falls, and I just stood still for a moment. I could hear the brainsuckers making noises from behind the walls where I couldn't see them. Those noises combined with the music absolutely freaked me out so badly that I immediately saved and quit. I popped back in the next day only to save and quit just as quickly. I finally worked up the nerve and just went through the place as quickly as I could. I was sloppy and lost all my insight so the Doll went inactive for me until I took care of the Celestial Emissary. I've never before been so happy to have 1) a shortcut to a lamp/bonfire and 2) such an easy boss after that hell and before Ebrietas. Hypogean Gaol after I got kidnapped was a bit freaky, but I kept dying to the Snatchers so much that I started getting frustrated instead of scared.

@SolaScientiaАй бұрын
I did admittedly laugh when it happened, because it's such a random moment. It's like they were trying to be sneaky, but they screwed up and made the chandelier fall. That said, I was definitely running back to the doorway so I could cheese the 3 of them as I was laughing. No way was I fighting 3 of them fairly. The 4th one down on the floor hiding behind the columns, however, just about made me piss myself because I didn't expect a 4th. Then it was silent except for the music and the brainsuckers making noises where I couldn't see them behind walls. I saved and quit so fast, lol. The music in the Hypogean Gaol isn't as unsettling as the Upper Cathedral Ward music and noises for me.

I noticed a pattern that I'm more spooked when placed into large, mostly empty, open areas. The absence of enemies can be more unnerving than an area filled with monsters.
@SolaScientiaАй бұрын
Yeah, big empty areas get me on edge, because I get worried about what's going to jump out at me. I like the Fishing Hamlet, but I agree about the Untended Graves. It'd be less bad if the run to Champion Gundyr didn't start getting annoying. Those ladies with the dual daggers keep aggro way too long, so I end up stopping to kill the 2 near the bonfire just so they won't chase me all the way to the fog wall.
