I loved Kennits character, she gives you every single reason to feel for him, to feel the pain he went through as a child and then BRUTALLY reminding you that it doesnt erase the sins of the adult. You can understand him but she doesnt let you like him. Great (though monstrous) villain

I love these books. When I hear you guys talking about them, it makes me want to reread them again. There's so many other books out there that it's hard to justify reading one series 4 times. 🙃

Good review. I was concerned this might end like The Farseer trilogy with Assassins Quest being mostly a let down for me, but that was not the case. While I still have some gripes about it, I really enjoyed the entire trilogy and that slow burn does pay off in the end. It also gets you excited for more exploration of this world as there are several things that elude to things coming or paths crossing in later books I feel. I dont know, but excited to see where we go from here.

I lost sleep over the end of this book (or rather the part where Kennit reminds us he is a villain). I've never experienced that over a piece of fiction. I love reading dark stuff, but Hobb is the first writer to really have that effect on me. Not even the Red Wedding made me lose sleep.

Her ability to make me feel the deepest feelings scares me sometimes. I just finished Farseer for the 4th time and still cried and wailed like a baby for Fitz at the end. About to start Ships again and just love this rollercoaster I go on every couple of years 😅

lol I also was "live-shipping" Malta and Reyn hard throughout this one after also wanting to punch Malta for much of books 1 and 2 😅 You did better than me by catching the Kennit/Paragon connection before we got the explicit reveal -- and what an incredible reveal it was!! I'm right with you on Paragon stealing the show in this book, and Kennit being a spectacular layered villain. I'm a bit worried for Tawny Man since like you I did not love AQ and Liveship just blew me completely out of the water, but I'll try to go in with tempered expectations.

Love Realm of the Elderlings so much and in the middle of my 3rd read through. Hobb makes me feel all the feels to such a deep, wounding level. Liveships makes me feel really uneasy. The only other time I’ve been left with that haunted feeling was after reading The Passage by Justin Cronin.

I kind of fell in the same net of one book picking up right where the previous left off. Actually, the only reason I did a time skip with book4 is because writing a nautical book is kind of intimidating -- so i'm definitely gonna check out this series! ^_^

Kennit is such a well written villain, because at times you find yourself forgetting that fact, that he IS a villain. Until, as you say, you can’t. I was physically recoiling from the book the entire time I was reading one particular scene.
@sjholmesbrown2 жыл бұрын
I think Kennit is a perfect example of 'Hurting people hurt people'. The most heartbreaking part of his character arc (and Paragon's) is what they could have been if life hadn't gone the way it did.
@Waldemar-108116 ай бұрын
Wow, just finished this series and it's gone right to the top of my top 10 fantasy series. The character's are amazing (although Kennit crossed an unforgiveable line for me) and the plot was incredible. Usually with a fantasy series you know how it's going to end (the good guys will triumph) but how they get there is the interesting part. With this series it was hard to know how it was going to conclude - who were the good guys etc. The Amber plot line went a bit over my head and seemed to fizzle out without a satisfying conclusion, but I'm probably missing something and I agree that Serilla wasn't great.

I largely agree with your thoughts on the characters arcs, and how Wintrow wasn’t as big of a player in this one. And I’m reading the Rain Wilds now and they’re kind of as not great as people say, unfortunately. Just gotta power through. At least they’re shorter than most of her other works.

O Mike, Mike! I am slightly ahead of you - on second book of Tawny Man. I wish we were in sync and then you could be my book buddy, to check in with you fresh and current what you thought. But I am still be interested to hear your take on Liveships, even if the story's moved on. Hobb is a great author but I sometimes experience a plot hole here and there, do you have the same thought? p.s. Anyone thinking of skipping Liveships, that's going to come back and bite you in book 2 of Tawny Man. Don't do it.

Agreed on Serilla. But Kennitt was alwys the villain and were reminded of this in about very scene he was in. It was just that nobody else saw it. And while I did like many parts of the book, I found most of the endings odd and overall very depressing.

I don't think it is as good as the series you mentioned. Yes the books read very well but there is no epic feeling on stuff that really should make you feel that. A combination of some weird plot choices in the first trilogy, and a lack of depth in the liveship traders threw me off. That being said the consensus is quite opposite to my opinion and you lose nothing in giving the book a chance, just my two cents
