Mancub is doing a flux core welding test that is used a lot in ship building. Instead. of doing the same old test, we decided to step it up and see if Mancub can beat the Arcair automated arc gouger.
We're going to start with welding out 3/8" plate using select 730 gas shielded flux core wire and the ESAB rebel 285. After it's all capped out, we will flip it over and arc gouge the backside. We will do 3 feet by hand ar gouging and 3 feet with automated arc gouging.
Let the best man win!

Flat weld like that in a shipyard... you'd probably be using ceramic backing tape with 100% CO2 shield. No back gouging necessary. Or even a single pass with ceramic tape and subarc.

Love how this channel shows everything. Shows what happens in real life. Mistakes lol and how to fix them. I don't care who you are you makes mistakes. May not like to but we all do it. It may not look like some of us do because we fix them before we let it go out the door. It's good to know that if something gets out of whack when you are fabing or welding that it isn't the end of the world.

at 6:00 in I can see your two plates bowing. I think in a hurry kills us all! I am not the most patient person. See my previous painting jobs and not giving proper drying times. I had the same problem with making my small welding table. 1st time it was pretty bad. I cleaned it up and got my quarter inch steel down after cutting it with a grinder. Even after that in the end one of the pieces bowed just a little. Still worked out anyways. I was pretty impressed that my Hobart Handler 140 was good enough to make 1/4" x 6" x 18" steel actually lift up! I just bought the welder 2 months ago. It was my 2nd project after welding my hollow tubed metal chair back together. Besides safety being number one, fun is a close 2nd! Thanks for the video!

We did something similar on the rail road in tank car repair UTLX. We weren’t allowed any power tools. Chipping hammer and wire brush only. No arc or chipping hammer marks allowed outside weld area. Test was done on 7/8”x 12” test coupons. Gouged first side 75% of metal thickness, weld, flip over and repeat. Over head vertical and horizontal. Then it was sent for X-ray. This was the process we used for tank structural inserts.

Once years ago my friend and I at work had an evil plan. Every morning the buzzer would go off at 6:30 for work to start. Guys would filter out of the break room to their places, clean their glasses, put on their gear, finish coffee..... We decided that at 6:30 we'd turn on the air arc and keep gouging the 3/4" plates that we were on the day before. We were not very popular for a couple of days 😆😆

Interesting you used a single bevel in the 1G position when D1.1 specifically says its not recommended. Definitely important to address the potential for lack of fusion along the square edge. Looks like you did a great job keeping that wire pointed at the square edge and adjusting your work angle slightly to get good fusion. A lot of beginners bust out on this type of test because they under estimate the difficulty of the square edge. Great job!!!!

One of the test at the ship yard I worked “bath iron works” was a double bevel no landing 1/8 inch gap ceramic backing vertical up with 0.45 100s hard wire pulse arc mode. Not allowed to touch what comes out under the root pass on ceramic side. It has to be a perfect weld. But you can grind on your fill passes on the front side but not touch your cover passes. I'm just a hobby welder, using it to fix my machinery and stuff. I use a stick welder with 6013 weld rods. I guessed that ship welding was technical, but that was massively technical. A couple things I want to ask though. I always get metal warping, even if I clamp it and do short runs, then when I finish and take off the clamps bam and it springs out warped, but I notice you tack welded those bridge shape plates on the back, does that stop warping the metal? Second thing is I notice you did long welds without stopping. I always thought you don't do that because it would heat up the metal too much and distort it?
@himynameisjeff
@himynameisjeff 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what the bridge shaped plates counteract. Without those, the weld would cup the two plates toward the weld, and as he mentioned in the video, the material expansion still ended up opening his root opening because it wasnt tacked closely enough. Hope that help
@MrBooojangles
@MrBooojangles 3 жыл бұрын
@@himynameisjeff thanks yes. Can i also ask you, is it easier to weld with a Mig welder then a stick welder and do you get as much warping with Mig welding. It's just I mostly have to weld steel of 2mm to 8mm, but I notice guys using a Mig welder on car bodywork seem to be able to weld that thin stuff with no problem.

Which type of TIG AC/DC welding machine you recommend for TIG beginner welders? I have experience with MIG but wanting to buy TIG for some small project's and Aluminium, SS etc. welding at my mechanic shop? Of course I don't need worst chinese type which will fall apart in a year, also is there any good combo with plasma cutter?

I bought a Hypertherm 45XP. 3 phase 20 amp plug so I run it off the welder on my truck. I'm in Australia and always try to buy the best and this Hypertherm is absolutely unbelievable. Wonderful technology from the USA. It cuts, fine gouges, heavy gouges, engraves and with the Flush Cut Nozzle/tips it bends the plasma arc 45 degrees so you can cut flush. I am SO HAPPY with this machine. Worth every cent.

Maybe I'm just stupid, but I never understood how the air is passed through the electrode to gouge the metal. Could someone explain that to me please? Thank you.
@aaronready8195
@aaronready8195 4 жыл бұрын
The air doesn't pass thru it, it blows behind one side of the rod so that you can control the direction the slag goes to push it out of the grove otherwise it would be an uncontrollable mess

Next time I build an aircraft carrier, you'll be my first hire as an inspector/weldor. If your schedule would permit a year or 4 on the project, of course. (Does anyone else still spell the welding operator "weldor" or an I behind the times?)

Jeffry Blackmon people either don’t know the difference between Welder the Machine and Weldor the person or they don’t care.

Of course a machine will do better on a table with a nice straight weld joint... that occurrence doesnt happen very often though. And if it does, just butt the plates together and sub-arc em. Youve got a good gouging hand though, that takes a lot of practice. I would say i wish i was skilled at gouging but that shit sucks lol

Why carbon arc instead of gouge with the plasma cutter? Is one better than the other?

A lot of places are using more plasma these days. We need to be play around with it a little more.

any talk on the torch welding that once was done? yes ships, 1 of my grandpas talked about doing it, then after a close call, came back to rural area to live. I would guess very early to mid 1920's then I had a welding teacher that was in his 70's in the 1980's & he talked about torch welding ships in his youth, he pushed torch welding hard, plus when I took auto-body, late 1980's, my dinosaur teacher a different teacher than welding teacher, wouldnt allow any welding process but torch & lead to fill gaps, or just metal finish, so even today I prefer torch, but love seeing old torch work. its such a dying art.
