Well done! You should seriously consider putting some analog gauges on the engines as a backup. Even in aircraft, a glass cockpit has essential gauges as backup. Love your channel.
@meofnz23208 ай бұрын
As a counterpoint to those suggesting keeping analogue gauges on the engines as a back up… Why? You don’t really need gauges at all in a get you home situation. You still have separate sensors and alarms for oil pressure and temperature. And you don’t usually have backups for analogue gauges, which aren’t immune to failure.
@buffplums8 ай бұрын
I do like digital but the only thing that would worry about is if there was an electronic failure say power supply, then you lose the lot. As an electronics engineer, I have always found that simple is often best with analogue gauges, you have so much more robustness and reliability … highly integrated electronics are so much more vulnerable to voltage transients and static. From my own experience, I have seen something as simple as a voltage regulator that overheats and fails, Next you have 24v down a 12V supply rail and any microprocessors, ram etc usually die, especially now as most processors run on 3v3 and you have multiple regulators stepping down from say 24v … that’s a big power drop so we use switching regulators which are much more efficient but even so, I, always am a bit wary about digital. As a compromise, what you could still do is keep all your old instruments and make maybe just an essential analogue panel but wire an extension cable to a multi pin connector and have a hidden breakout connect under the main dash and keep your analogue panel on board stored somewhere and if the worst happens you can hook up your old instruments again. Would hate to think of you being stuck out at sea and without any means of seeing your data. Anyway, just my thoughts, I do love what you have done but just my honest thoughts as an electronics engineer of some 40 plus years lol 😂
@andyb91273 күн бұрын
Interesting point but were the gauges being replaced truly analogue? During the dismantling of these gauges, it's clear they are being controlled by an electrical wire, not a mechanical cable. Therefore the pre-existing system was also electricity dependant and wouldn't an electrical fault also had caused the loss of readouts on the old gauges? Honest question, I really don't know the answer.

Really Pretty! But as an aircraft guy, I'd mount a couple of oil pressure gauges right on the engines in case of electrical failure.
@AndrewJackson-mf5qp8 ай бұрын
The new dash looks awesome guys. I would be inclined to still use the analog for redundancy for engine monitoring. Im old and electronics are not reliable enough for me.
@Vara1698 ай бұрын
Oil pressure coolant temperature and depth are critical, and there should be fail safe systems for those. Engine shutdown, and warning for depth. Have experienced all 3 in my 40ft launch, each one saved me.
@davidswain56878 ай бұрын
Brilliant dashboard but I have to agree, I think you'd do well to have a couple of analogue guages as backups to your amazing digital setup. Great video, keep them coming, please. Cheers Dave Swain and family xx😊

Hi Guy's. What would look nice would be to have some decretive rope work whipping TDC on your wheel. It would also give you a visual reference point if the sun's obscuring your screens...
@jamesa75068 ай бұрын
It does look fancy and well done on the workmanship but you should consider having a few mechanical gages on the engines also. An additional, and comparatively inexpensive, level of insurance.
@johnwynne21798 ай бұрын
Brilliant job, dash looks clean and modern, would of kept analogue as a back up, but that's just my personal opinion.

If you are wise, when you install a video camera in your engine room, use one with infra-red capability. A quick scan of the screen can tell you if any component is overheating.
@DuncanBeaird8 ай бұрын
I agree with 2thehook 773 1000%. Since you have the analog gauges now redundant, make them redundant, in the engine compartment. You should have some nice pieces of left over aluminum sheet you can even use. Or, just use pieces of the chunks you cut out of the old IP. Good work, though, it looks great!!!
@hamshackleton8 ай бұрын
Quick safety question - as you have changed all the metalwork around it - have you 'swung' your magnetic compass to see if it still reads something like correct - just in case all the electrics quit, and you have to navigate home the old-fashioned way?

"Crackin" upgrade I would say. Today's electronics are so cool compared to the ole days. Great call on the Carbon Fibre wrap material and for sure the lower portion really brought it all together. 😊 enjoy the boating season with the family ....

Nice set up if you believe digital over analogical in damp / wet conditions is the way to go, but pretty brilliant what can be done. Years ago in Nav classes and sea training the first thing your told when not just coast hopping is never depend on anything off of a battery. Things move on where instrumentation is concerned, but will they really stand the test of time for what they cost, in the condition their in such as a open boat. However Simon very clean, tidy set up being all handmade..

it would be really good if the screen for the readings of rpm oil etc was bigger like the ray marine then i think perfect but they seem to have small icons on the display with a larger screen you can put more things being monitored and see them better from a distance cause they will be bigger. the analogue was good i.e. the tachos but size wise as they were easy to have a look at.

@raycarlson13428 ай бұрын
Excellent job it looks really professional. Just one thing I would be concerned about. Is that a magnetic compass mounted on top of the dashboard? if so you could get some unwanted magnetic effect from the instrument electrics. I bet you have already thought of that though 🙂 RayC

I love what you have done to the boat. Both in terms of repairs and upgrades. However, I love even more that you have made boating something that anyone can do and that it is not only a playground for the rich and famous. Of course, those that are familiar with boating already know that, but for many of us, this false perception of it being something beyond our reach or capabilities, the message that you are sending out is just fantastic.

What's wrong with whiting? Tossed in a frypan with butter they are delicious.
@jaygee56938 ай бұрын
I agree, they are good eating, and I like them crumbed, fried in butter, or foil wrapped and baked. I think that some people consider them "common" because they're so numerous and sometimes all you can catch. The flesh is flaky, so unless they are very freshly caught it can be tricky to cut whole fillets, but then they are beautiful in fish cakes.

I wonder is there a seal between the new screens and the dashboard? So no water ( spilled tea) can get into the back of the screens. Other suggestion is a independent bilge switch to a alarm. So if the main bilge system fails ( they often do) you still have a alarm that you have problems below😮 Cheers
