There's a spring loaded copper plate that the starter solenoid armature forces onto copper mushrooms on the back of the connection bolts. Yours have welded itself together, separate and clean and jobs done. It's Common problem.

It sounds to me like the solenoid is not pushing the pinion gear into position.
@wildcoyote342 жыл бұрын
@@Dave5843-d9m that's what you are hearing ,, the starter motor is running but the solenoid has not pulled the bendix into contact with the engine flywheel ,, this is caused by the switch part of the solenoid getting stuck ,,there is a spring in there that is supposed to release the switch and that's probably the culprit

hello, you don't have to buy a new starter motor, which is very expensive, they repair very well and have a guarantee of years after repair. Notice, you should also check the alternators of the two motors, they have to give between 13 and 14 volts, good job

Oh yeah, a new chartplotter! So easy once you get used to them. I hope, but also know you will, plan on scouting the area around Sarinda. Just getting Sarinda out of that mud hole and into deep water is one thing, getting her back in that nest she has built over all these years, will be the real trick of the day.

Looking back at the engine room, the one thing every ship is in need of is a certified paint chipper tool. I would believe that that compartment should have a complete chipping session first, including all the mechanicals. Take it all down to the bare metals and repaint with the appropriate color schemes for fuel, air, and water lines. What I see now is probably 20 people having had a go over the years with various cans and sprays that cover up those beautiful Cats. Remember the beautiful photographs taken on the other WW-2 boat? Yours should have no less.

I can't believe that as well as working on your boat restoration, you also fit in day jobs, children, housework and RYA Day Skipper training! Blimey, you can only do all that over a period of time with a very solid family relationship. When I heard you announce your intention to save this lovely boat on national radio some while back, I subscribed immediately. However, there have been a few times since, when I've wondered whether the amount of work could eventually overwhelm you. Which just goes to show that judging others (by my standards) is wholly unfair to them! Congratulations on the project and good luck for the future.
@philyew36172 жыл бұрын
The starter motor solenoid contacts are probably stuck and/or welded together, quite possibly due to lack of use. It just needs a thorough strip and clean up, and lubricate the moving parts. I don't think your auxiliary power system is at fault (but I'm happy to be wrong). If you can't manage the starter repair yourself, don't go to the expense of a new one, first thing would be to find a local specialist. I googled "Commercial Starter Motor Repairs, Liverpool". The first two on the search list both have 5 start reputations for repair and rebuilding starters. However it should be a simple job. One thing to watch out for... When you take the starter motor off the engine it will be deceptively heavy so watch your fingers and don't drop it. Hope this helps.

Hi Gemma and Simon, A suggestion incase someone else hasn't mentioned for Bat ship crazy, you mentioned a windscreen for the monitor I would also add some kind of fold out sunscreen cause when out on the water you might have the sun reflecting on the screen that could make it hard to read not to mention blind you from the suns reflection. Cheers from Canada

For my little 35' wooden sloop, I placed the square read-outs on a teak board that hinged so that they could be seen from inside or hinged out to see them from the cockpit. That might be a good way to fit your VHF on the small boat so that you have access to the controls when hailing and changing channels.

Hey you two, Love the idea of using the small boat to practice Nav work etc. Also you can get the family doing some line and fender training so you are a team when the time comes. I spent several winter evenings charting a course up the East coast from The Medway to The Humber, when I took my boat home to the yard at Castleford Yorkshire. Used paper charts and then bought a plotter at the London Boat show and transferred the info across, even attended the Goole Waterways Museum open day and met a bunch of Dunkirk vets, had an interview with the Yorkshire Prost. This you can look forward to and good luck.

Bendix gear on the starter? Worn teeth ? Could be sticking such that it doesn’t engage or disengage … they use inertia to fly up into the teeth of the flywheel ring gear. Have seen this in car engines and the bendix gear sticks due to dried up,grease… dunno just a suggestion mate

Using your little boat to map out a channel is a great idea. However, the river and the tides will move the silt around so your private chart will be out of date by the time you move Sarinda. Do your hydrography just before you move Sarindra out of her mud berth.
@fonhollohan29082 жыл бұрын
maybe the starter might need to be taken apart and put some new grease in it so the bendex is able to move more freely if she's been sitting for so long..maybe that might help the situation? what are your thoughts on that one. Mostlikely its not an issue but just a thought.

I notice the boat is in a sunk in mud hole so when you do leave that area your propellers might drag into the mud but it should get out and if you are concerned about the mud you might want to lighten the boat some to make it more buoyant if possible or dig away some of the mud at low tide. I can't wait to see it leave under its own power.

If you are checking tide levels and keeping a record of your data, barometric pressure is another variable. Tables are at 1013hPa and each hPa is 1cm. The lower the pressure the higher the tide. An anticyclone might make leaving more difficult.

Excellent as usual. Such fun. I believe you cant just put a horn of any size on a boat. Its a vehicle and by law the horn has to be a certain pitch based on the size of your boat. Bigger boats have deeper pitches and smaller boats have higher pitches etc. Example would be in foggy conditions, two boats approaching each other but cant see each other so they use horns to determine size and who gives way. It might be wise to look up the rules on this before too long. Your coast guard might cite you for an incorrect horn pitch if its wrong.

Hey guys. Great film that. Loving the new tech stuff. I got thinking about the location of the chart plotter and it mount. Water way where sarinda is now charts. Lay out some cardboard with X's on them 10 meters apart in a square pattern. . Send the drone up for a straight down image. To print. Do this at low tide. Go back and with a t shaped pipe you can measure the depths of some of the channels. You can merge the info and print it on large format paper. 11x17 or 13x19 and have a decent chart. Get gps readings of where you put the cardboard squares.

If it was me I would run the engines every fortnite or month at least 20 mins, check for leaks, make sure they have cooling and check the filters, no engine like being stood for long periods, we have all seen someone pull a vehicle out from some barn or the woods and put a battery on it and proclaim its up and running fine, but it's not. I would run the props at higher water to push the mud out and keep the bearings and seals moving, but it's not my boat, I know the list of jobs grows every time you look at anything on the boat.

These transducer mounts are notorious for water damage to the transom. Suggestion… get ya a 1” block of starboard and size it a little larger than your mount. Then get a 3/4” forsner bit and cut a few holes about 1/8” deep on the back. Mask off the area around where the block will go (over them screw holes ya just put in the transom) and sand prep the area. Mix up some thickened epoxy and glue ya starboard block on. Then mount ya transducer to that.

When you do leave and it’s your first time behind the wheel, just remember one thing, don’t ever be throttle heavy, it’s not like a small boat, you need to be very slow and careful, never heavy handed, a 70ft boat does not stop and is not as easy to manoeuvre as a small boat, in a marina you can do a lot of damage with a board that you are not aware of.
