Shipoopi was my favorite number in the original film: brilliantly choreographed, danced at a nearly maniac pace and delightful. This is good too, but….

I don't like the new lyrics either too preachy. I've always seen, or maybe interpreted the original as celebrating level headed women who don't rush into things.

2 biggest issues for me is they changed the lyrics which ive spent so long memorizing it really threw me out of it and in the original they had someone who isn't a great singer, it feels weird to hear someone try and sing it nicely. I mean nothing against the guy he's a great singer just bad casting i guess.

Because the old lyrics are "offensive" to some, so they hired people to rewrite the lyrics in Shipoopi, Ya Got Trouble, and The Sadder-But-Wiser Girl.

It's ridiculous to change the lyrics. Extract the entire number if you're worried about offending some idiot. Most people who would go to this liked the show the way it was intended.

Absolutely despised the new lyrics. Took me out of this number which was unfortunate because the choreography is spectacular and I was too taken aback to appreciate it

Interesting, I didn’t mind the new lyrics. Of course, I was more taken aback by the old lyrics, which do not send the right message to the young people in the company or those in the audience.

The old lyrics are hugely problematic, as they promote misogyny, sexism and objectification of women, whereas the updated lyrics send a far more positive message of respect.

Agreed. If the lyrics were an issue, then eliminate the vocal portion and retain it as an instrumental dance number.

I completely agree. A conman/conman's assistant singing in 1912 would not be "shy and fretful." These changes along with others (Sadder But Wiser Girl) sand down WIlson's original gleaming edge lyrics. This show has always been a saterical love letter to both the willfully ignorant small town mindset as well as the overly synical conman. Remove those edges and you are left with less of a show.

I love that they decided the old lyrics were problematic, but not the fact that Harold Hill is a remorseless con-man who has made a fat living swindling working class people in several states for years. And if you are a woman whose boyfriend or husband spends a thousand dollars for two tickets to see Hugh Jackman dancing and then gets handsy afterward, you probably have bigger problems than the lyrics to Shipoopi.

Shipoopi usually has a lot of energy and the audience gets really into it,this is a disappointment on many levels.

Orchestrations sound thin. That's most unfortunate. Golden Age shows have a particular lush sound. If the producers aren't willing to invest in that, they're missing the point of a good revival. It matters. Anything less sounds like a workshop or a reading.

No chemistry between the two leads at all. Sutton Foster communicates to the audience that she's working really hard to do this dance.

Did you see it? I have to disagree. In this actual scene, they aren’t supposed to have chemistry. She doesn’t like him at this point in the show. I saw it live five times and all everyone could talk about was their chemistry!! They were fantastic!

You clearly didn’t see the show, the relationship between Sutton and Hugh was one of the absolute highlights of the production!
