When you get to it, LNG is going to be very important in 2025 (I think). While Russia can hide oil in its parallel or shadow fleet, gas is much harder to hide due to the newer and more specialised vessels. With Ukraine's decision to not renew a gas deal with Russia (why would it) ship-carried gas (as LNG) will be increasingly important and many countries are also increasingly reliant on gas for heating and as an alternative to coal for electricity generation. There also seems to be a shift to LNG in shipping rather than through pipes. What do you think?

1) Ship Systems: What big ship systems are (drive train?, generators?) how the systems work together. Like a Haynes manual for a ship would be cool. 2) How the crew works and the different jobs on ships and ports etc. 3) Nautical terminology explained. Why is the bridge called a bridge? What is keel hauling actually? Will California allow CalPoly Maritime to keep such a mascot?

I would love to learn how they coordinated trade over long distance before the advent of telecommunications. Because until then, word spread at the same pace as the goods.

@stco2426 follow-up to LNG would be hydrogen. How much more complicated is it, can it become economic?

It's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" from the late Edo Period in Japan (very appropriate given the gunboat diplomacy that ended the Edo Period and forced Japan into globalised seaborne trade). It's one of the most famous, and most reproduced, pieces of art.

Sal This video series is a great innovation. During these times of de-globalization the impacts of shipping on world affairs and vice versa are tremendous. As someone from a non maritime background I find your videos to be a window into a hither to unknown world at a time where this knowledge is essential. Thanks.

It’s brilliant that you’re doing a 101 series! Shipping is such an important (and increasingly contentious) part of what we humans do, and unless you work in the field it can be a total mystery. You make it fun to learn about the people, ships, and conventions we all depend on, and it’s especially cool when you dive into the history behind events in the news. Thanks 🙏 🚢🐋

Love the show Sal, can't wait for more of this series. I'm into shipping and merchant trade due to my Grandpa, he was a WW2 Merchant navy man and continued to sail the waters up until the late 70's. Remember growing up in the early 90's and he had a massive radio setup with a giant antenna wrapped around the property boundary to get max range. We were in Hobart Australia but he would listen in on merchant radio traffic and he would pick up all sorts of signals bouncing of the ionosphere. Good times and keen to learn the lil extra things I never knew I don't know!
