Horrible way to ship... Front panel over the front of the speaker should be ½ plywood Immobilize the speaker with pool noodles And then the speaker need to be wrapped with pool noodles as well and then saran wrapped or shrink wrap, w/e is convenient Last step is making sure the speaker after wrapping fits snuggly in the box, do NOT use an oversized box that is hard to handle and allows for large abouts of movement, the speaker is going to be bounced around for hours on end and WILL deflate the peanuts or pop bubble wrap Pool noodles are cheap, tough and found everwhere My background? I collect and ship old school car audio subs that run upwards of 70lbs... they have to packed for war to survive I have lost more old school subs to bubblewrap and big boxes than anything else If the ups guy cant get ahold of the box, its going to get shoved and kicked to move it, plain and simple

My shipping method works fine. Plywood is overkill and unnecessary. Never have lost a speaker using this method and I’ve been doing a lot longer than you have. My background includes shipping multiple Pioneer SX-1250s, Sansui 9090s, JBL L100s, JBL XPL200s and literally thousands of other items over the last fifteen years.

@@chrisw.3077 hahaha ok, lets you send a pair of fosgate power hx2 15s... they will be absolutely destroyed ... You need to learn that ups drivers and fedex dont care like they used to... adapt before you lose something you cant replace

Do yourself a favor. Next time you buy packing material, buy it from uline and purchase their double walled boxes. The boxes themselves are plenty strong. What you are describing above doesn’t even factor in because you can easily stand on the package and it won’t even budge.

The only really noteworthy addition to this would be to have the driver fully wrapped in plastic wrap…I think is just behind protecting the face of the driver with a rigid board, because it protects the cone from anything entering the basket from behind. Like when you have vintage drivers with an attached L-pad or anything else. Also if those peanuts were placed directly on top of the driver, there will definitely be peanuts in between the basket and cone when unpacked. They usually don’t do damage, but you don’t want any foreign objects in there touching cone, or the fine VC wires. Had a speaker arrive from Germany yesterday with peanuts lodged in there, and I had to carefully remove with tweezers.

The last speakers I shipped was a pair of Altec A7-500 VOTT. They needed a jumbo pallet

If you are shipping two matching drivers you can bolt or zip tie the two drivers together face to face. I like to double box the drivers for shipping. This looks like a good approach for relatively light and replaceable drivers. In the case something irreplaceable I would likely try to personally deliver it or have the recipient collect it in person. Take photos of the items before they are packaged so you can prove that they were in hood condition prior to shipping in the event of an insurance claim. Shipping companies are sometimes rough on everything.

Chris, given that the front rubber sits out from the diaphragm of the speaker, aren't you worried that by laying it flat on the cardboard it's putting pressure on that part?

If by diaphragm, you mean cone, then no, I’m not worried. That’s because on JBLs and most speakers you’ll find, there is going to be a metal frame that the cone is glued to. So if you have cardboard against a cork or paper gasket against a paper cone glued to a metal basket, there is little opportunity for damage.
