I would be most grateful if the Government of Ghana would clearly define who real foreigners are from who Our family in the Diaspora trying to return home are. I am a bit disturbed when they refer to Diasporans as foreigners when we all understand what happened and why. I am so glad the year of return was launched in Ghana and I think I would be more grateful if diasporans are not seen as foreigners but as one of our very own kind coming back home. I also believe a lot should be done to properly help diasporans integrate smoothly into society.

The constitution of Ghana says once one of your parents is a Ghanaian, you are also Ghanaian whether you were born in Ghana or not. Just apply for a Ghanaian passport

@GEORGE MENSAH-AFFUL Appreciate that... but we are foreigners. Just as a person born here who has schooled abroad may also be considered a foreigner. We talk different, look different, dress different... and prioritize different. That's okay. I hope you sense from these two guys that we are welcome! Even if we are foreign born or raised abroad. They were, as most Ghanaians, most inviting, helpful and supportive! Additionally, there is a part of the government for Diasporian Affairs as well as a part of the Tourism board here in Ghana. They are doing their best to help integrate and support and have ALWAYS treated us as family and welcomed us back home.

This is a very interesting and helpful conversation. You guys were brave to come with only suitcases and carryons. We did ship the things we would not find easily and affordable here in Ghana. We have been planning our move for a long time and shipping door to door via Ghanaian shippers in the U.S. was and is the way to go. In most states just find out where the African market or Ghanaian market is and through them you will find a reliable shipper doing door to door. Shipping a car is really a hustle so yes buy it in Ghana if you can. Tony, have you checked Shoprite or Game to see if you can find grits? Although there is the Ghana version if you ever run out and are desperate. Also if I find grits, I will get some for you. Get a mattress topper through Amazon and if the seller ships internationally it will be delivered to your home address in Tema. We just had a plumbing snake equipment bought on Amazon and shipped through DHL, delivered to our address and it took just about a week. Shipping cost us 60 dollars as the item was not very heavy but it is so worth it since immediate problem solved easily and long term savings is great. You can get many electrical appliances in Ghana but the quality ones are expensive. Have you heard of 220 Volt? Is a company that supplies diplomats and service men country specific voltage items from the U.S. We were blessed they have a brick and mortar store in our state so we bought all are 220 appliances from them. Good brands that you know and trust at more affordable prices. Our shipper even picks up items at their Metro DC location and ship to our home. Check the 220 Volt store out? Please don’t buy used foreign mattress. Also just for your comfort buy a bed and mattress and have it shipped to you. We are enjoying our shipped bed and comfortable mattress. I am enjoying your videos. We got here about 2 weeks after you did. We are settled in and enjoying Ghana even the bumpy roads and go slow traffic. Be careful with business partners. Do your due diligence. When you find a good and right fit partner it works otherwise you will lose your hard earned money in a heartbeat. Enjoy Ghana!

With mattress, I suggest you go direct to the mattress manufacturers. A couple in the Industrial area in Accra - Latex foam and Ashfoam. Speak direct with the General/Sales Managers and they will help you chose the best type of mattress for your body. You can even have it customised to your bed size and even choose the covering you prefer. There are different types of orthopedics. I brought a couple of mattresses from UK when I relocated but the customised ones I bought from Latex foam seem much better for the body attested by friends and family who have visited from overseas.

This is so powerful! I have been on both sides of shipping everything and shipping nothing since we still have two years or so Lord willing my husband is waiting to decide until closer to the time one of the games he is concerned about is the quality items by there in terms of treadmills and he did mention the mattress and possibly the living room furniture lawn equipment and things of that nature. I think I’m kind of in the middle now about shipping maybe ship some stuff and leave some. He definitely wants to ship his TVs which one of them is 70 something inch so he spent a lot of money on it and thanks the quality there would not be as good. So to answer your question I think we’re still undecided but if I have two years I think I will try and see if in that time I make sure I don’t buy anything and as a matter of fact start getting rid of some things that just sit around for no apparent reason. I would love to see a video or several perhaps hey series of videos as you guys buy things for your home and you go shopping for them I would like to see a comparison of the quality of the items available. I did go to ShopRite when I was there and took some pictures and videos of the items you could purchase but that was the only place that I really looked for household items

Y'all better not delete this video EVER though lol.... it's way too important, and imho, one of a can hands on info. Thanks my hometown fam... be blessed.

Uncle you can do a retail but you need to invest 1million USD if you are not a Ghanaian but if you partner with a Ghanaian you need to invest maximum up 25000USD that is why people prefer to partner with Ghanaians so things can be very easy and simple

Such valuable information for prospective investors......always wondered why Africans and Caribbean ppl don’t utilize the sun more for their energy needs......the sun is free!! Hope you find a good mattress :-)

Just to clarify- the 'bigger is better' mentality is more a US one, it's not really here in Europe. Fridges, cars, are smaller here too because we don't need huge fridges as we shop more often and food is fresher (similar to Africa) and fridges are not status symbols here. Cars are also generally smaller too for better fuel efficiency and we care about emissions...and they're better built :P

Yes, retail business is solely reserved for Ghanaian nationals, wholesale, production and manufacturing can be operated by Foreigners without local partnership.

Hey guys see you’re still at it. Spent 3 years in South Africa. It’s not the big things you miss but the small things. Like home style barbecue sauce, never ever saw a TV dinner. No kool aid if you drink it. No mozzarella cheese on the pizza and very light tomato sauce. The key to doing business in Africa is Technology. Don’t look at what they are doing but what they are not doing. Stay away from retail unless you can compete with the Chinese and it infringes on some of the locals way of life. Be a supplier to them if you can plenty of stuff on Amazon to buy and sell minus duty. You’re from Texas when is the last time you had a good brisket? You can cook you a good Texas brisket with some of grandma’s 3 cheese Mac and cheese with some turnip.collards, and mustard greens good luck finding them with some baked beans with brown sugar, cinnamon, a little butter with hamburger and bacon bits or maybe pineapple and mix it with some African dishes and have African soul food American style restaurant.Target the tourists people see what they like.
@ExpatLifeGhana4 жыл бұрын
Great points @Edward Greer and totally agree about the retail space. In other news, we've found decent pizza and TV dinners are homemade (jollof and chicken or peanut stew) are on a tray... so we aren't missing those. AND Tony put his foot in some shrimp creole the other day with the help of our stash of seasoning. I do miss Blue Bell ice cream 😉. Investing in things that target expats and tourists is a great way to go - great advice!

Loving your videos Tony and I o, Keep up the good work I love the fact that you now can literally buy anything in Ghana I was about to suggest that one of your family members do door-to-door and send you a beautiful new mattress. But with the emergence of department stores and furniture stores all across across surely there has to be one where you can buy a new box spring or memory foam mattress? Maybe this could be in an upcoming video where to buy furniture interiors beds mattresses tables lamps LOL et cetera et cetera. I would definitely find a video like that very informative especially as we are hearing that you do not need to ship anything so it would be nice to know where we could go in Accra or temma
@ExpatLifeGhana4 жыл бұрын
@Doreen Ayi - One of our upcoming videos is us buying furniture. We found the big stores prices for bedroom furniture to be pricey and not of good quality so we had our bedroom set hand made for us with real hardwood. We are gonna look into having a mattress made from a local manufacturer and thanks for the comment 😊!

Best to have a Ghanaian work permit and also a Ghanaian citizenship to work in Ghana. To invest or start a business is what the gentleman said, best to have a Ghanaian partnership because most establishments are reserved for the Ghanaian locals or citizens to avoid foreign influx on the market.
