On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Over 800 sailors were stranded on the open sea, facing devastating conditions and hungry sharks. Only 316 sailors were rescued. The final resting place of the ship was a mystery - until 70 years later, in this episode of History’s Greatest Mysteries: Solved, a new History digital original series. #HistorysGreatestMysteriesSolved

I know a navy man who survived this wreck. He just passed away in 2018 or 19. His name was Al Pawlek. I didn't know this until I lost touch with him. I wish I had known, so I could retell his story. He was an amazing man, husband, Father and friend ❤

I became close with my 95 year old neighbor. He told me his first posting was in Berlin. He was a pilot of one of the aircraft. They took thousands of pounds of candy and make sure all the kids had pieces of candy. These guys are part of the angels that took good care of children who really needed it. It's never mentioned the guys also took large loads of blankets, personal hygiene products and thousands of pairs of pants and jackets as well as child sizes, thousands of shirts, socks , hats and very important hats In my mind all nurses are gods sent by God himself to look over his children. My dad would have been 100 this this year. He served on pt boats. He was in the same group of that was run over by a much larger boats ships. He actually knew who Kennedy . run over their their. Good God I miss him

So two friends and I just spent a decent portion of 8th grade making a clearly student made documentary on this ship just thinking it was cool our state had a well known ship in WW2. We had no idea the magnitude of it. Thanks to the project though, I am now decently well versed on this infamous ship/topic

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side it was comin' back from the island of Tinian, just delivered the bomb. 1100 men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger, 13 footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know...was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light the sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups and the idea was, the shark comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces. Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland, baseball player. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. He'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day a Lockheed Ventura saw us and come in low and 3 hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, 1100 men went in the water, 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway....we delivered the bomb.

Supposedly that ROV (7:50) that went to the bottom of the Marianas Trench ended up in the scrap yard in Vancouver

Trieste was not an ROV, it was manned by a naval crew. It was not scrapped, but retired.

@@patrickmccrann991 Your right I was wrong in my my use of words and I apologize for calling it an ROV but I am not wrong with it being found in a scrap yard by James Delgado and I believe that it was found in Vancouver BC and I am not 100% sure but I believe that he rescued it but I heard the words from his mouth about finding it. Cheers

wow all the battleship footage is the Bismarck or tirpitz at the 3:02 mark etc, still the most saddest story's i have herd of lost at sea tragedies and god bless Capital Mcvay and all those who lost their lives those 5 days at sea after she went down? To think he still commanded his men and made sure that they could stay alive as much as his words could say ,plus the dr as well who saved two men by swimming out to them when they were trying to swim away due to suffering hallucinations due to drinking salt water?

It's always the bloody same. Who refused the Indionaplis's escort that Captain McVeigh requested?? Captain McVeigh was a damned good Captain, but they needed a scapegoat & so the higharkey used him. None of the higher command were held to task, WHY NOT!!!

@@robertyoung3992 Robert thank you for the correction, I was spelling it the Irish way, but the spelling of surnames change down the years, all depending on who is writing the name. Like hundreds of years ago when illiteracy was quite normal If you joined the army your name may have been spelt differently than your birth register, or on your marriage license or than your religious minister spelt it. My own name has had about 10 derivatives which I found whilst doing my ancestry. But hey I will not make that mistake again, so again thank you Robert

it's a shame that Captain McVay is blamed for the sinking of his vessel even tho he requested support for the destroyer escort that could have saved the vessel was denied.
