I spent many a happy day as a child on Platessa as my father was the skipper Freddie Challis until his forced retirement after an accident at sea.I was lucky about 10 years ago when I was allowed to cut from the hull her name plate which was carved in the bow. It now is fixed to the wall in my cabin ( I say cabin as I live on 65ft widebeam only 1000 mtrs from where she lies and aptly named PLATESSA ) a constant reminder of many happy times. I was part of the crew that raised her and beached her where she lays now. Thats me on the deck.All the logs of the raising of the yellowtail I donated to lowestoft Maritime Museum,

Interesting stuff. I grew up and went to school in Lowestoft, during the late 1950s us kids used to go a mess about on the wrecks on the south side of Lake Lothing as the land around there was largely undeveloped. As I came from a pretty poor family I used to gather up winkles from there and we would boil them for tea.

Thank you so much! I lived in Lowie until a year ago (and am longing to return) I walked past these almost every day, taking many photographs, and often wondered what their stories were. I always felt that it was a sad place as so many boats were left to decay but at the same time hauntingly beautiful. I love the briney smell in the area where the salt water meets the fresh. Really great video. Thank you.

Great video and hi def for sure! I’ve been looking at a couple of houses for sale in the south shore near the (Probe) minesweeper! So interesting to get the story . I guess lake Lothing was where the old Herring fleet was layer up/abandoned. It’s the main exit from the Broads . So interesting. Cheers Warren
