nowonmetube understood. Definitely not for everybody. I just happen to be one of those old-school fans who came into roguelikes not with the original rogue, but with Nethack. I just love how it is getting represented even just on the Switch now. Especially in ways I can’t as easily do with PC. First, on the go and with no effort or setup just play it on TV afterwards. I keep my ear out on the Roguelike community including Roguelike Radio. And Shiren seems to be quite possibly, the most respected console Roguelike franchise mentioned there.

The way Koppa runs is so similar to how Eevee ran in the first games... I really wish the remastered dungeon games didn't use Gamefreak's clunky models but made new ones at least for the playable characters, it would make the games so much better cause when I look at all these pixel sprite animations it looks so nostalgic and great.

@@wintersong2266 That's unfortunate... I'm sick and tired of seeing the same 6 year old XY models at this point. We've seen them in 10 games in total already.. Freaking. 10. And they're not even good models, lifeless and expressionless.. I really miss the sprite arts from the older games and how they were different in every game so it was always interesting to see how this and that looks in the newest.

Well kind of, this is actually the second series using the Mystery Dungeon mechanics the first one that Spike Chunsoft made was Taloon's Great Adventure which was a Dragon Quest spinoff.

Before "roguelike" was a term, before people said "it's the 'Dark Souls' of...", I remember EGM magazine talking about a Shiren the Wanderer game for...folks here keep saying DS but I thought it was GBA. They said something to the tune of, "I died as my arrow killed the enemy. This kind of thing happens all the time in Shiren the Wanderer, and it's awesome."

To be fair, Roguelike was a term for a very long time. The term was created even by the time stuff like Angband, Moria, and Nethack came out. The DS wasn't even in concept, at the time. It just didn't enter the vernacular for console owners, but for computer owners, we were in there.

I mean doesnt help that most of the series never got localized outside of Japan other than the pokemon ones. But I'd still say the series is well known. This game is ten years old now, so you can already see how people liked it! The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games were actually spin-offs from the other spike chunsoft Mystery Dungeon games that predated it, this one actually came to the west on the Vita in 2016 but the majority of the series is Japan only.

the precursor to pokemon mystery dungeon and chocobo mystery dungeon, those amazing series wouldnt have existed without this one and oh man is this one of the harder ones. Def going to get this as well the other 2 were toned down for the more casual audience, this one is the real deal no punches, die and you lose everything a true roguelike game.

No, the original Mystery Dungeon game was a SNES game based around the Dragon Quest IV party member Taloon. He got a couple of games, and they're pretty hardcore.
