Shirgaon Fort ( शिरगांव किल्ला ),also known as Shirgao or Shirgaon Bandar, is a coastal fort located in the Shirgaon village, Palghar district, Maharashtra. Let me share some interesting details about this historical fort:
History: The fort was built during the Yadava of Devgiri in 1225 A.D. It has seen various rulers over time, including the Gujarati Musalman rulers, the Bahamani Dynasty, and the Ahmednagar Sultanate. The Portuguese captured it in the early 16th century, and later, the Marathas successfully recaptured it in 1739 after a siege. The British took control of the fort in 18181.
Architecture: Shirgaon Fort is in excellent condition. Its outer walls, steps, parapets, and bastions are made of solid masonry. The fort is rectangular in shape, with five bastions. Four of these bastions at the corners are octagonal, while the fifth one near the entrance gate is circular. The vestibules for guards near the entrance gate are also well-preserved. It takes about an hour to walk around the parapet wall and explore all the areas of the fort1.
