She was certainly ahead of her time talking about manifesting in the 80's. And ending with "I deserve this" was brilliant. Yes she did.

Oh grow up you. Manifesting is a LIE, PR bubble of nothingness, big wordsalad that is sold at industrial scale to naive fools like you. People don't manifest illness, war, misery, abuse, starvation... You wanna think you're in control, go ahead. Wait till life suprises you. Look around, and think how much of this is ''manifested'', did I manifest lifelong illness, tell me? Do you not realize how callous this ridiculous belief is?

@@grandmalovesmebest Shirley MacLaine's big problem Is that in her heyday she was completely overshadowed by superstars like Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn who were payed more and were way more popular, however this late Oscar maybe is One of the reasons of her incredibile career longevity, she is still working on a regular basis while Audrey virtually retired in 1967 and Sophia has been appearing on the screen occasionally from the end of the 70's up to a few years ago. Shirley MacLaine's character in "Terms of Endearment" was eccentric, with any number of unpredictable characteristics and foibles that had to be played convincingly. Her role as Aurora was much more of a challenge than Debra Winger's role as Emma. Years from now Shirley MacLaine's performance as Aurora Greenway in Terms of Endearment should be used as an example of truly great screen acting. Her saturation went down to the bone. Because of her efforts, we understood this character as well as Shirley did, passing through the stages of life along with her. A woman capable of love but with a closeness which had to be forced and somehow at the cost of her basic fairness to humankind. Hopelessly imperious and so fearful of growing old she expects her grandchildren to call her "Mrs. Greenway." Extremely funny in spite of a set of characteristics which can only be viewed as pitiful. Brava Shirley. The Oscar was a long time coming but could not have been more deserved.

+laxus 94 Bullshit. I love Debra, but she just cant be compared to MacLaine, who was not only by far the best part of that underrated film, but she stole every scene she was in as Mrs. Greenway. Debra was a shadow in comparison.

I loved the sequel to "Terms of Endearment" called " The Evening Star. " Not many people know about it as everyone I've asked say they've never heard of it. Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson are both in it. It shows you afterwards when the Grandchildren have grown up. Juliet Lewis plays the teenage Granddaughter. The full movie is on KZbin. Definitely worth a watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/eX3ciGp-i8t6oac

When she hugs Debra you see there’s Love between those two actresses. They wanted to pin them against each other.

@@vastolive8 Probably; but this year's Oscars didn't see a lot of standing ovations.

We don't see standing ovations (or very rarely) in Oscar ceremonies prior to the mid to late 80s. It's a shame especially in cases like this where one would have been extremely appropriate.

Lol,…I have a dear friend who was Shirley’s rehearsal pianist for years. I remember he said after seeing this, “She deserves the award for portraying a nice person.” Love that.
