Wow if she was sick in this performance I wonder how she would have sounded healthy She dissimulates any illness very well Shirley Verret owned the part of Lady Macbeth during the 1970's and 1980's even there is a film version Some years before this performance in Paris there is the one from La Scala with Claudio Abbado conducting At the end of this aria and cabaletta the ovation was one of the longest in the history of that temple of opera The face of maestro Abbado was asif he was possesed by an incantation Yes she sound a little shrill in this video But the delivery the involvement with the character she is almost as possesed by Lady Macbeth and certainly by Verdi's music Her Lady Macbeth was like an exorcism like a ritual There is also a story that the recording that Kirsten Flagstad did of Alceste she was also sick or not feeling well besides she was quite old already and still sounds so beautiful This kind of artist are very rare now not to say they are an extinct class La Verret once said about her voice when she was asked what type of voice she was soprano contralto etc She said I only know I love to sing if I can sing the role I sing it if not I do not She did not care for classifications she was equal with Aida and Amneris Cassandre and Didon even Salome But for me her reference role is Lady Macbeth Any aspiring singer to sing this role first study la Verret and then think well if you can match this bravisima
