I'm in tears, I had to give away my first service dog prospect because he wasn't able to get over certain behaviors no matter what me and my trainers did. It broke my heart. I have never cried harder when I realized Dillon wasn't going to be happy as a service dog (A local organization helps people like me train their own dogs. We screened Dillon before getting him and he was great for the first six months). I swear on my life Dillon started crying, too. He laid on the bed next to me and started making a huffing and gasping sound-- I made myself stop crying so I could comfort him. Long story short, I had to rehome him. This was 4.5 years ago, I've had my current service dog for 4 years now. I still miss Dillon. I still dream about him. I understand the connection you can make with a dog, especially one so highly trained, intelligent, and in-tune with you as all working dogs are. I am so happy you have Mr. Maple!

As someone who owner trained their service dog, getting a program dog seems like such a wonderful and unique experience. I'm literally tearing up when I think about how much Mr. Maple has brought to your life. Are you getting back to those 45-hour walks now?
@kutanra Жыл бұрын
I've got an owner trained dog as well and honestly I'm not sure how I would feel about getting an organisation dog. Like, on the one hand I guess there's that "guarantee" so to speak when it comes to supporting access, and obviously for someone who does not have the time/money/mobility etc to train a dog from scratch this is a great option. But I have very specific ways of communicating with my dog and having to try and adapt to someone else's commands and procedures would be a bigger learning curve for either myself or the dog.
@bugbean550010 ай бұрын
@@kutanraI'm getting a program service dog and he's already been with me about a month in the past six months, split up in 3 visits. Except basic commands you can customize everything. You could even change those when he's moving in which will be in February for me. I had similar thoughts before like the ones you've mentioned, but especially communication with the dog is something you just figure out together as a team whilst building your bond. There may be stricter programs, I only know this one, but all the everyday stuff is up to me and he's smart enough to just adapt. I know two blind women and their guide dogs are both from the same program trained exactly the same. They can change them out and do routes and it works out. With other service dogs it's much more individual what they need to be trained for depending on what the handler specifically needs because of the disability.

Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem that includes the lines: “Brothers and sisters I bid you beware/ Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.” He was a dog lover, I hasten to add, and knew the pain of losing a dog. I can imagine that, given the additional circumstance of the actual support with finding your independence, that giving up the dog must have been seriously painful. Thank goodness we know the happy ending that is Mr Maple.

Due to my not-exactly-great sense of direction, finding my way around a new place is scary enough as a sighted person. If I were blind and depressed as well, I’d definitely stay home most of the time. One thing I suspect Paul will understand better than most people, or at least better than most sighted people, is how knowing how to get to a place doesn’t automatically mean I know how to get back from the place to wherever I went there from. Things look different depending on which direction I’m looking from, and obstacles and “markers” are different on each side of the road.

This will be a long post, sorry. As a wheelchair user I understand your frustrations with scooter's. They are a nightmare. I have been hit soo many times going through crossings because the scooter hasn't obeyed the rules of the road. Once a guy who was on a stand alone scooter(no handles, it's like a step either side of a wheel) hit me and went flying over my wheelchair. He hit a car that had stopped at the lights, opposite from me and this guy, could have seriously injured himself but her proceeded to verbally attack me for me "taking him out", thankfully people in their cars got out to assist him and I and verbally told him off for what he did. What we both didn't see was a cop car a few cars back who had seen what happened. The officer got out, came to me first and asked me to not say anything. He asked the scooter driver to stand on the pavement and any drivers who wanted to speak to the officer to park beyond the junction so that we wouldn't be stopping traffic. Anyway, the officer spoke with the scooter driver who proceeded to say I didn't wait for the crossing and he had the right of way. The officer was so patient with him and kind of pretended to be on his side. He then went to the witnesses that stayed and took their statements, came to me and asked me to still not say anything but to look at him and pretend I was looking worried(which I didn't have to pretend) as he had seen what happened and the witnesses had backed up what had happened. He then asked the scooter driver to come over and he asked, if "you" want to press charges or get a fine for breaking the rules of the road. The scooter driver, with a smirk on his face said he wanted both and the officer just looked at him and said he was talking to me, which pissed him off and made him go absolutely nuts. He was told to calm down or he would be in handcuffs and possibly arrested for threatening behaviour. He calmed down but was told both the he and the witnesses had seen what happened and all fault was on him and not I. He was charged and fined but continued to argue that I could have killed him to which I responded. He could have been killed, he was right about that but he went through a red light not me. Complete entitlement. A separate incident though no one thankfully got hit but I was at a junction, waiting for the light for me to cross when this guy on a standard scooter went flying through the junction, he had a young boy (son I presume) standing in front of him on the scooter, holding the handlebars and another child roughly a year old on a carrier on his back. Not a helmet on any of them. When I was crossing the junction I looked left and saw he had been pulled by a police car and I hope to god he got a massive telling off for child endangerment and a fine. There are more entitled scooter drivers than those who obey the rules

Some European cities start banning them, I hope either everyone will follow or they will find a way to ensure people are being more obedient to the rules and respectful. Even as a fully sighted person sometimes it is difficult not to trip or injure yourself with the scooters, broken glass etc.

When you went out and showed us your 'route' and you stopped for coffee, is then Mr maple not working or is he always working when you're out. Also when you had your coffees could he not get a drink too. Just curious. As a dog lover I can't pass a dog without saying hello but I know I can't with a guide dog when they're working, but is he still classed as working when you stop for a break. It would be helpful for a lot of us who aren't sure of the rules. Love from the uk x
