Kind of a trauma dump at the end so if its not your thing don't read or delete it My 8th grade science teacher got fired for teaching us about evolution despite it being on a curriculum in a public school. I know the stick in the mud kid's parent that made the complaint, whackjob family who was a grade below mine. They said it infringed on their rights to freedom of religion to have to take a test on evolution, and since its deep south this actually gets a good science teacher fired. Teacher actually had us doing science stuff like learning about structure integrity of buildings with architecture test with houses made of spaghetti to hold up books, had us mixing chemicals(that couldn't harm us), etc. This was about 2014 and there's currently a law being reviewed in the supreme court about Alabama having a law requiring to show the ten commandments on a wall in public school so clearly stuff hasn't changed. On a hunting trip after LSU won a rivalry game against old miss, my uncle and dad got sloshed more than Irish sailors. Well my cousin was 9 and I was 13 and I cut my finger on a hunting knife while cleaning it to the point of needing stitches. They were too drunk to take me to a hospital and literally said the clay line "You gotta be more careful son!" I poured rubbing alcohol on it then kept putting bandaids on repeatedly despite it bleeding through the bandaid almost immediately. Somehow after 30ish minutes the adhesiveness from the bandaid/blood from my body finally worked together to clot it. For reasons beyond my comprehension to this day, my teen brain decided that not showing my sober dad the next morning the cut was a good idea and instead i climbed a 25 foot stand where the cut reopened on the way up/down but didn't bleed no where near as severely. Mom saw it when i got home where she sent me to the army vet doctors at the end of the street, the mom gave my dad the biggest dressing down of his life. To my dad/uncle's credit, they actually learned from the mistake and made sure there was a sober adult on every trip since. To clarify, they never drank in the field, it all occurred when we got back to the RV and we had already cleaned any deer we killed/got the generator going, unloaded the guns, etc. Its not as bad as Orel's hunting trip but it'd be hard to top that. The part where Orel's parents freak out about debtors and Christine's parents freak out about trespassers is so accurate. You have people who clown on 7 day Adventist for thinking literally the same stuff as them but they believe the sabbath is on Saturday instead of Sunday. You have people who freak out that one group has 3 stalls instead of 4 in their bathroom church. You have people who freak out about people taking the flesh(the bread) of the lord but not the blood(the wine[its not alcoholic, but taste bad.]) One of the best jokes ever told about Christianity is by George Carlin "We have a place we gather on Sundays to compare clothing." Have actually seen poor people looked at for not wearing the best clothes to church, and the only times I/my parents ironed a shirt for my entire childhood was to go to church and my dad had a 100k+ a year job. The episode with the figurelli's getting separate but equal? We never had anything outrageous like that happen, but during high school in 2018 we had 3 racial incidents within a month at the middle/high school. The first one was a kid airdropping a picture of a klan member as a meme. Airdropping meme's was very popular in the cafeteria/pep rallies but they got bent out of shape about this one but this did not stop the flood of the very same meme in the cafeteria the next school day. In my opinion this wasn't even that bad but I am also comparing it to the time a girls nudes getting airdropped so the klan airdrop has very steep competition. The second involved a teacher saying "I'm going to beat you to death with a brick you n(fill in the word.) At least this was the incident that broke the camels back. I had his class btw, FFA teacher who was a whacko who screamed at kids to get off the grass/onto the sidewalk during pickup, One time he just snuck up right and put his face like half a inch from my ear when playing cod zombies on the iphone.The third involved a picture of a student wearing a confederate flag shirt in a cotton field with a shotgun making it into the yearbook. The teacher who monitors the yearbook was out for medical leave that year and the students who did the yearbook for reasons beyond anyone's comprehension thought that was fine to put into the yearbook. The teacher who monitored the yearbook hated it and wouldn't talk about it next year which really sucked because she was so sweet. She got voted most popular teacher so many times she pulled a full Bill Elliot and request her name off the ballot so other teachers could win. Sucks she wasn't there to stop it but its moreso on the incompetence of the school board/principle for not putting someone else in to monitor the yearbook team. At least the teacher didn't have her reputation tarnished at all by this incident because the year after(my senior year) despite her name being off the ballet, she still won the most popular teacher by write ins. One final story which can't be proven but I want to include it. The previously year to everything listed above, I went to a private school(only went for 3/4's a year and this was the worst moments in my life for reasons outside/inside the private school, but more to that later). The history teacher showed us civil war movie but didn't get a censored part of it so she just warned kids they might hear the hard r, but actually said the hard r during the warning. She was a good teacher but just a incredibly bad lapse in judgement. One that should of been obvious. The thing that happens a lot in the show is the hypocrisy that happens with these supposedly good christian characters acting like utter degenerates. The most common trope I've seen living here is the mentality of "I asked god for x so I didn't do y but then realized that's not how religion works so I did y anyway, then I asked for forgiveness so its ok." Not everyone here is a terrible human, and the ones that are usually don't reach the loonie tunes levels in the show, but a few do. Reverend putty is probably the most accurate character shown. He's has his bad moments but he does change/has good moments, he actually tries despite how much he fumbles and won't change on some issues(like the racism). People like orels parent's never bothered to try. The last two stories are going to involve stuff relating to the episode alone so heads up My grandma(really my mom's aunt) was a nun. She was a nun for about 20 years before deciding to leave the church. During her time as a nun, she had developed a ovary problem they had caught early where they could of treated it normally, but the doctors decided "Well she's a nun, she doesn't need em, lets just remove em instead!" Perfect mentality to have with a patient am I right? Well when she left the church, she left with a pastor and got married(the irony isn't lost on me) and he wanted kids but she could no longer have them. One day she woke up, and he'd skipped town never to be seen again. Who knows if this was the reason why. Obviously she didn't get it as bad as Ms. Censordoll but it still shows the mindset the doctors had at the time to just take the easy route of "remove them" instead of doing it the proper way when they had the option of doing it the proper way since they caught it early. The parts in alone with nurse bendy are frightening accurate to similar stuff I did after I got groomed/SA'd. The words/phrases she used in the prayer are very similar to prayer's I had said during the brief stint I was at a private school and still had faith. I'd say prayers during the bible time(every Wednesday from 12-1) instead of listening to whatever sermon the pastor or roaming speaker was giving and would pray for outs/healing/to stop being bullied at the school/stop fighting with parents and it never got answered. The part where she also retreats into a fantasy world is also accurate because people want to go into it to be in a world where whatever is giving them a problem either isn't there or they can deal with it in whatever way they wish there. The worst problem down here is no one teaches you effective coping strategies that aren't related to religion. Everyone down here just tells you to hand your baggage off to Jesus and he will carry it, but there's bags you get from life events that effect your development through life. Stuff like death of a family/friend, life crippling injury/long term care injury you can recover from, SA, fighting in a war, divorce, traumatic event like car accident, crippled family members, a very big break/opportunity stolen from you, etc are all bags that are life events you get stuck with and can't just hand off. So you ask people what to do and they say the same thing of "just hand it to Jesus" while you're telling them the straps are made of glue, you can't unhand it. So when it fails, you have to figure it out by trial and error which is usually 90% error, 10% "that worked"
