@ParkerCS2Ай бұрын
Yes. Exactly. Also Kai had some reason to why he was doing what he was doing. He felt betrayed by his best friend and also hated that his prior glory as warrior and hero of China was wiped from record due to his selfish action towards getting addicted to chi to the point of harming innocent life, that he sought to destroy everything oogway built as payback. Definitely not sympathetic, but he wasn’t just a generic bad guy unlike the chameleon. I compare Kai to someone like Jack Horner or Pitch Black. Someone who has reasons for doing bad things but isn’t sympathetic at all and is still pure evil.

Shen would have outright won if he didn't release the Soothsayer, who healed Po. Shen was giving Po a good fight in the end, with speed over strength, but his real power was psychological manipulation. Kai was just a juggernaut, though. The whole movie has a great tension that Kai is coming, and that Po needs to grow into his role as teacher to stand a chance.
@scipion3679Ай бұрын
In defense to Kai, apparently Oogway was also a conquering warlord and his brother-in-arms. It's less that Kai turned evil and more Oogway that turned good when discovering Chi, "betraying" Kai in the process. With that said, I agree that Kai would have benefited from more development on his backstory to be as compelling as the legends that are Shen and Tai Lung.
@ParkerCS2Ай бұрын
Also Kai’s reputation as a warrior and hero for China was erased from history due to his selfish actions towards sentient life stealing chi from life, thus was trying to destroy everything oogway built as revenge. He wasn’t necessarily a generic villain. He had layers, but he just wasn’t given enough fleshing out.

@snowball2280Ай бұрын
Additionally, since Kai and Oogway were blood brothers (as in brothers forged through bloodshed on the battlefield; blood is thicker than water and all that), and Oogway was nearly killed on the battlefield, from Kai's prospective it was his lack of power that led to the possibility of danger arising and not that he was unable to build up anything and only could destroy. When he saw Oogway become more passive, he saw him become weaker, since to him not being aggressive is weakness (cause on a battlefield, striking first is almost always best) and saw him endangering himself. He couldn't understand how his friend had been so poisoned other than the panda's being the cause, so no pandas Oogway will be back to normal right? no obv, but that's not the mindset of a warlord who rules with overwhelming power But yeah, there was no screen time for any of this, and no real substantial development

There's a small layer to Kai's motivation I feel like he doesn't outright say, but does heavily imply with his dialogue that may infer to what he really wanted originally. In almost every encounter Kai has, he seems to be increasingly frustrated that nobody knows who he is. It's been a long time since he's been alive and, while Oogway has statues and is generally loved, Kai, who was his "brother" for most of their lives has been completely forgotten. Kai has been buried by the flow of time and I believe what Kai ultimately wanted (whether he knew it or not) was to leave his mark on history... that he would be remembered... and that never happened. It's why when Po actually acknowledges Kai's history that his anger subsides even for a moment and he seems actually happy. While not being as obvious as the other villains, Kai's real issue was a feeling of insecurity and that he wanted people to know of him. He wanted to be a legend. He did not want to be a forgotten memory.
@norsehorse84Ай бұрын
On top of this, Kai's intention mirrors what Po wants in KFP3. To leave a legacy. He perfectly fits the theme of this particular movie. I still stand by Kai being a far better villain thematically than most people give him credit for.
@addictedtofauna3838Ай бұрын
@@norsehorse84 Not to mention his backstory does the same, him not changing with Oogway from the warlord days after seeing the pandas and instead resenting Oogway for attacking him and painting himself as a monk parallels Po’s other conflict of not wanting anything to change, he wanted his identity to stay the same but Po eventually realises that you can simply find your identity through your natural actions rather than just forcing it to be a certain way and that’s all that matters.

There’s much more stark artworks in his lighting as he actually throws the entire jade palace down the mountain. @@apenasmaisumdiogo.7115 I like your idea that Po appointed Zhen now, but that she won't take on the role of dragon warrior until much later. According to the first film, it usually takes *YEARS* of training to become a kung fu master. So, it makes sense that it is tradition to begin training a younger person while still in your prime: by the time they are ready to step up, you'd be ready to step down.

I really liked the use of Trigress in this movie too. It was really satisfying to see how her and Po’s relationship had developed through all 3 movies. You get to see how they both come to respect each other’s differences that they’d initially found to be strange. They also don’t have a forced relationship unlike how most movies believe that “male and female characters must be romantic partners and can’t just be friends.”

2:34 when the valley comes under attack and Po is going off to fight Kai’s jombies, the lighting on Li turns blood red. It shows the lingering PTSD that Li has from Shen’s attack that massacred his people, definitely killed his wife, and seemingly killed his son all in one fell swoop when he “lost everything”. Very brief, quiet moment but effective.

Something that still bothers me about 4 that could have at least made the ending a little better is Poe's choice of new dragon warrior. He chose Awkwafina Fox when Tigress would have been a way better option. The deal in the first movie is that everyone expected Tigress to be the dragon warrior even when it was given to Poe. It would have been such an amazing tie-in to the first movie if she finally got the title she had trained for her entire life.
@TheGame-hl1ewАй бұрын
I 100% agree. Tigress has this powerful character arc as she grows from struggling to reconcile with not being selected as the dragon warrior. I, too, find myself greatly frustrated at the 4th film's audacity to not only throw aside her development for a less compelling character, but to not even INCLUDE HER at all. As Schaff mentioned during this video, KFP3, despite some of the goofier moments, respects the previous films. Somehow, the 4th movie fails at achieving both the emotional maturity of the first two films and staying true to the characters and their arcs. Suddenly, the conclusion brings the movie down to something like a 4/10 for me.
@WisenedMan19 күн бұрын
I disagree. One major component of Tigress' character is her learning that being the DW is not her destiny and she has gradually come to terms with this. While she definitely respects the title and what it represents it isn't what she truly needed. Besides, her primary motivation for wanting the DW title in the first place was to finally make Shifu proud of her. She didn't really care about the title itself. Same thing with her getting into Kung Fu and following the warrior's path was again due to Shifu and her desire to be close to him and have him genuinely acknowledge her and love her enough. Tigress was deprived of love all of her life so this sense. She received all of the love and validation she needed in her life from Po later anyway.
@maxmeidl4909Ай бұрын
It might be hard for the villain to live up to the standards of someone who single-handily escaped a maximum security prison using only a feather, and Gary Oldman as an evil peacock, but I do have to give Kai props for not only still posing as a decent threat (and for arguably being more powerful than both Tai Lung and Shen COMBINED), and for also getting the yellow m&m himself to provide the voice.

Something else I'll add - this is the one theater experience I've had where seeing it in 3D actually benefitted the film. I usually avoid 3D, but I saw this as part of a three-movie day and the only showing that fit the schedule was in 3D. It turns out the stuff in the spirit world was excellent in 3D, and conveyed the scale of the space and the objects floating (and being flung around) in it VERY well.

The third act misunderstanding being reversed in 5 minutes is very refreshing, especially having Po's adoptive father helping with it too. Instead I think KFP 4 should have been about Shifu wanting The Furious Five to disperse across China to spread his teachings while Po stays. Have THAT be the change that Po and the rest have to deal with and then they have some conversations on how each of them feels different about that during their final mission together to take down the Chameleon (who hopefully has a much better motivation in this version) Oh and Zhen is nowhere to be found.
