This strotam is written by Ravana( a demon king of lanka) and a devotee of Lord Shiva Once Ravana tried to lift the mount Kailash (Abode of Lord Shiva) and take it all the way to Lanka. He had got arrogance of being greatest devotee of Lord Shiva so he wanted the Lord to be always near him. He was able to lift the mountain a little when Lord Shiva sitting on the top pressed the mountain with his foot. Ravana had his hands smashed under the mountain and he screamed in pain, thus breaking Ravana's arrogance. Ravana than sang this which came to be known as SHIV TANDAV STROTAM

Where it says “destroyer of the God of love”, the story is about Kaam Dev (cupid). So Kaam Dev is sent by the Gods to wake Shivji from his deep millennium old meditation and make him fall in love with mother Shakti, so that the material world could continue to evolve. But as soon as he wakes up Shivji from his ages long deep meditation, Shivji’s profound radiance suddenly multiplies infinitely and Kaam Dev is burned to death becoz of it. The story is symbolic and it teaches not to give up in our principles and do simething just becoz yr boss or seniors are telling u to do it, don’t get into anything unless u know what u are getting yrself into and u have a plan B ready in yr hands.

RAVANABRAMHA also known as RAVANASURA aka RAVANA, was the greatest Brahmin born on the face of earth ever. Sura and Asura are two divisions where Sura means one with Natural powers and Asura means the ones without. Humans and demons were asuras where gods were suras. Hence came forth the conjunction in name RAVANA + Asura = Ravanasura. He wasn't a demon or a semi-human Semi-demon. He was a clear human who got filled with ego and other aspects and performed some evil deeds. Rama - Ayodhya rama (incarnation of Lord vishnu) himself respected Ravana the most for his worldly deeds and achievements and how great a human and king he was. The misfortune that befalls Ravana in Ramayan is because of the greed he shows when he impresses lord shiva and recieves his boons. The first time he asks for athma lingam which is the lord Shiva's soul itself and Lord Shiva gives it. But to protect the world Lord Ganesha interrupts the Ravan's journey to lanka and makes Puts down the linga ( Read Bhookailash grandham for reference) Then he request lord shiva to give parvathi (lord shiva's wife) that's when lord shiva gives her and he himself gets her back, by seeing his bad intentions of owning someone's wife , Maata Parvathi bestowes the sin upon Ravana that he shall die in a dispute of owning someone's wife at the hands of The greatest incarnation of lord vishnu. Thus the story of Ramayana happens. Do not mistake Asura for a demon, humans and demons together come under asuras. RAVANA was a great Brahmin, a great human and a great King. Every human do have sins , so did he. But, to make the world know how not to become a sinister and how to protect Dharma came the Legends like Ramanyana and Mahabharatha

Strangely this Shiva Tandav stotram was composed by Dashanan(Ravana) when he was in absolute pain when his hands were getting crushed under the weight of Mount Kailash which was because of Shiva's thumb pressing down Mount Kailash when Ravana tried to lift it, and Ravana composed the Shiv Tandav Stotram to please Lord Shiva and asking him for forgivness to liberate him from the pain and suffering. This was composed more than 12,000 years old because Ravana is assumed to have lived in the Treta yuga.
