On October 2nd, 2016, Shlomo Mintz was awarded the Cremona Music Award 2016. He received the prize for his outstanding performances throughout his career. During the award ceremony at the Cremona Mondomusica fair, Shlomo Mintz was asked to play for the audience on the Stradivari "Vesuvius", built in 1727. In this video you get a backstage glimpse of how the Maestro adjust the instrument to his taste and preferences in less than one hour! After the prize ceremony, M° Mintz played the allegro from BACH Violin Sonata No.2 in A minor, BWV 1003, on this most precious violin from the collection of the Museo del Violino, which was brought to him especially for this occasion. www.ciceronema.com/shlomo-mintz

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet, but he's choking the hell out of those violins! I'm in awe of him as a violinist, but I've noticed that he presses more and more as he gets older.

actually it's probably because of 2 things. First, the mic is too close to the violin so you can hear the noise. Second the room has really poor accoustics

I can't believe he moved the bridge.... whatever Luthier set that up is furious if they're watching. You never move the bridge. Shocking. It immediately lost its clarity. You change its relationship to the sound post and its geometry on the violin.

It does sound a bit gritty, but that's how a violin sounds from real close. This sound's actually sweet and clear once you're far on a hall! The difficulty lies in knowing this when you study. If you try to sound good and sweet to your own ear, you won't project and people from afar won't enjoy that sweetness.

His own instrument sounds better. The Vesuvius has projection, but the sound is thin, rather tinny. I'm not a fan of his own instrument, but it has a more full range of tonality - more depth than the V. You can also hear the stops better. I've heard better modern violins. Many things can improve sound - strings, internal things like bass bars, position of the post (finding sweet spots), humidity, regular playing, etc. Anyone understand the Italian?

Anyone knows the violin he plays?Guadagnini?Stradivari school? Some say Stradivari school meaning what? that was made at the atelier of Stradivarius but not by him himself? Personally for my taste I think that Vesuvius sounds better, he uses great pressure on the right hand and the Vesuvius takes it like a champ, more clean sound, but when he picks his own the sound seems cheap and scratchier. Shlomo Mintz is a legend but could play in a better violin.

The Vesivius really sounded dull, its tone is very low. Like the tone of an electric guitar with 0 tone level adjusted. Maybe the string has to do with it?

More likely the quality of the microphone, digital compression and playback through your computer speakers. Also, very close mic'ed in a small room with nodes cancelling out frequencies, etc.

Since the Vesuvius obviously is a Museum exhibit and rarely played it must sound dull and dead even in the hands of such a master and possibly with the best of strings and best of bows. Maybe the same is true of the beautiful Messiah Strad (presumably crafted by J.B. Vuilleaume) in the Oxford Museum that never was played in public. Probably a disappointment.
@FiddlerSteve
@FiddlerSteve 7 жыл бұрын
I understand the Museo del Violino has a curator who plays the instruments regularly so assume the Vesuvius probably gets some exercise, unlike the Messiah. Wouldn't be the same as having a virtuoso concertize with it though.

The vesuvius sounds better, clearer, more focus and pop. But, unbelievably, he moved the bridge!! Only a luthier should ever move a bridge or sound post. It immediately lost its clarity after he moved it.
