"So i took advantage of the fact that I'm a star. Shook my hair and took a casual stroll up to the bar." Love this lyric! It's my attitude at any party LOL. Of course, I'm bald so the hair shake is metaphorical...but still 😉

"Super Trouper" - ABBA's "Emo Pop" album is a fan-favourite - the beginning of the end for ABBA as a group. Top 5 album in at least 10 countries - #1 in 7 of those. Hit in the UK (#1), Germany (#1), Canada (#4), New Zealand (#5), Australia (#5), and Japan (#8) - peaked at #17 in the US. Finished the best-selling albums of the year - UK (#1), Germany (#2), Austria (#4), and Netherlands (#5). The album was released on November 3 1980 and still became the biggest-selling album of 1980 in the UK. ✌

I LOVE this one. It's a necessary change of tone from the previous emotional drama. You're right, there is more of a synth sound of this album and it's very welcome. The lyrics are so tongue-in-cheek - "So I took advantage of the fact that I'm a star" "I said I was not exactly waiting for the bus" - the reply to all the questions asked in the song is "keep on rockin' baby 'til the night is gone - in other words, just chill and stop worrying, have a good time. It's just a great, flirty, fun pop song.

I like the crunch disco/ rock of this song and the high society lyric. It deserved to do better as a single in the USA.

I like this one, it probably should've been a single. There's definitely new-wave influences on Super Trouper and The Visitors. Aside from the synths, the vocals have some kind of treatment to make them sound more robotic.

ABBA, the kings and queens of catchy music! Very 80’s sounding. There’s a longer version with an extra verse of this song.

The Super Trouper album is like a prediction of what the 80‘s will be like, experimenting with new sounds. It’s a fun song, witty lyrics, pop rock, new wave, an intriguing mix. And you are right, the ABBA fanbase is something else and will be very supportive. Btw, looking forward to your next few Ace of Base reactions, not comparable to ABBA, but they are loved and still being played in so many countries . They have a huge worldwide fanbase, it’s just a matter of them discovering you. 🙃😉

Haha, for sure! I'm loving that deep-dive, and "Wheel of Fortune" was one of my favorites so far (though maybe still a half-step behind "Happy Nation"). But cheers for the reminder, I'll try to get an Ace of Base in during the next couple reactions batches. Cheers, Pascal!

Benny and Bjorn are huge Beach boys fans and made this song as a tribute to them. Later on one of The Beach Boys recorded it as a thank you. They cut out a verse which is found as a bonus track on its entire .

I enjoy hearing your comments during the ABBA reactions I’ve seen you do. You usually point something out about the song structure or elemental influences you are picking up on which even though I’ve been listening to ABBA all my life, I hadn’t heard in the same way. “On And On And On” has always been a strangely peculiar song for me. On the one hand it’s an example of the technical prowess of Bjorn and particularly Benny who at this particular point in the ABBA timeline, was very keen on incorporating synths and more advanced technical innovations in the studio. ABBA and Polar Studios were definitely pioneers in embracing digital advancements in recording. I think this song showcases that while retaining the ABBA-ness. The only thing I feel about this song which probably is why I don’t gravitate towards it when I am listening to ABBA is because it doesn’t really speak to me like it were a real life situation that I could buy into or that I believe could have actually occurred with either Agnetha or Frida. With most of ABBA’s songs, be it Agnetha or Frida singing, I feel like they are singing from a place of at least felt emotion within the context of the story or situation they are singing about. It’s still a banger of a song though and when I do listen to it I usually end up wondering why I don’t listen to it more LOL. Bizarre, I know. What I enjoyed about your observations were the way your ear zoomed in on the background vocals and mentioning how they had an angelic sound in contrast to the vocals up front in the mix. You also mentioned you hear a gospel influence and you have actually said that in previous ABBA reactions and that’s not something I’ve never picked up on. But, after you said it I could actually get where you were hearing that. And the biggest surprise, considering I am a product of and grew up on 80’s New Romantic, New Wave, Synth Pop music mainly UK artists, but, also other European and American artists as well. So, I had never heard this song as a pseudo forerunner of the sound which would come to dominate music in the early to mid 80s, but, you hit the nail on the head with that observation. I think it also has given me a new found respect for this track when I consider it in those terms. It will be interesting to hear what you notice on further ABBA songs as you continue in order. I know I’m jumping the gun here, but, I am really looking forward to hear what you have to say when you get to the title track of ABBA’s next album “The Visitors”. But, will enjoy hearing your observations on the rest of the tracks on the Super Trouper album and I’ll be paying close attention to 3 songs in particular, one of which I think you will be very, very interested in given you previous DJ experience.

I love this track, one of the highlights on this album and the perfect B side to Lay All Your Love On Me (when they were kinda forced to release that as a single because of bootlegging). I wonder whether they took a little inspiration from Squeeze's 'Cool for Cats'. Anyway, some welcome light relief from the heaviness of the previous track. The next is a beautiful song with Frida in impeccable lead - Andante (slow tempo).
