How good it is for me to share this trip with the album "Mr Natural" It brings back such nice memories of my coming out of adolescence. and my musical affinities back then and check today that this album is still valid in my musical taste "Drow a Penny" What a beautiful song, the changes of rhythm, the harmonies, Barry's almost whispering singing in the verses to move on to pure energy, a fabulous chorus, but Robin's voice in that melodic bridge is anthology (For these 'details' I consider Robin Gibb's voice in my Top5 of Rock & Pop music, along with Paul McCartney, Freddy Mercury, and the ladies born in 1950 Karen Carpenter and Agnetha Fältskog) and then that ensemble with the powerful "Down the road" shows me the Bee Gees rocking like The Beatles a level below the previous one, but equally good and example of the search and musical transition that the Bee Gees were experiencing very different from everything that came before, and equally different from the future to come I repeat it now, incredible to me that this album has been so inconsiderate by critics and the public, even Wikipedia has very little information I'll see you on the next track, another one from my Top3 album a big hug to everyone from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷 South America P.S.: thank you very much for the special mention, both in the video and in the description I was lucky that I remembered the detail of the ensemble just in time, so together we can all enjoy the two songs much more and your reaction is more appropriate and enjoyable

Yay!! I was so happy when I saw this one show-up. One of my favorites - love the transition between the two songs. As always, love your analysis and reaction. Mr. Natural is a very under-rated album, it is one of my favorites, right behind Main Course and Size Isn't Everything, which tie for first place. "Ain't no four-leaf clover gonna settle my luck, and I don't care - dooowwwwnnnn the road, down the road"

The structure of Throw a Penny is just amazing. There is already a contrast between the more gentle opening section with a harder edged part, but then there is that section that sounds like a dream right in the middle of it. Then things repeat and the ending sounds more improvised. Just before Matt mentioned that the song seemed to have some religious overtones, I was thinking this sounds like we're going to church. All that is great stuff and then we get Down the Road. This is a pretty rocking tune! I liked how the low brass got going. I love the bassline at the end of the phrase "down the road." And the vocal harmonies just keep getting better as the song goes. It's like a Bee Gees country gospel rock song, so much mixed together! And there is such a difference between the earlier 60s songs and this 70s sound, especially with the electric piano.

'Throw A Penny' is dedicated to childrenbelongings and 'Down The Road' was written by Barry with Steve Mc Queen in mind. Why? Once, that man tried to get nearer to Barry's wife, Linda. So clear, he had no chance at all. But the sentence 'Aint no words describing what that feelin's done to me' is excactly what he felt at that moment.

I love this story! And no, McQueen over Barry? No freaking way! "Chicken on the run." Absolutely love it!

Barry said they spent hours in the studio (at least he, Richardson, and Galuten) faded big Charade, Throw A Penny, and Down the Road into each other. I’ve often wondered if the original plan was to fade the whole album, but when so time consuming, they left it at just those three. Even the use of tambourines on Throw A Penny connect it to the begging hippies. There’s no judgement of the lifestyle. They don’t condemn or condone, but instead artistically capture that moment in time. At a party or something. Steve McQueen offered to take Barry’s wife Linda for a ride on the back of his motorcycle. The resulting lyrics are priceless... again translating his emotions so artistically in music. Their catalogue then becomes a sort of diary of their lives and the world around them, all of which is then given to the public to “read.”

Had to look up the story about Steve McQueen as never heard about it til now. According to the NY Post, Barry said they were at the Record Plant in LA when it occurred....luckily though Steve didn't get away with her!🎶

I’m so glad you finally got the CD! Sorry it took me awhile to get it to you. I knew you would enjoy the brass on Down the Road, it’s used on a couple more songs on the album but I don’t want to spoil anything. Thanks again for another great reaction and analysis. ✌🏼

Hey, Matt, are you an early riser, or a night owl like me? Just getting ready to hit the hay when I saw this video in the middle of the night (west coast US). I think that line in the first song is 'Overground,' not 'olden ground.' The Overground is the railway system in London. I can't make out a lot of the lyrics on "Down the Road." At one point, it sounds like Barry is saying, "Ain't no heavy Mr. Levy's gonna paddle my butt anywhere." But they do a great live version on the "Here at Last...Bee Gees...Live" album released in 1977.

Ah, I live on the West Coast too! And yes, I've been a night-owl since I was a teen (originally I had insomnia, then I started getting better sleep but offset from most people's schedule), and that continues right into the present day. Hahaha, wow, I need to re-listen and catch that paddle-line. And cheers, I'm hoping to react to some live Bee Gees after we go through more of their studio material.
