I'm back with another Cocteau Twins reaction from their 1983 album Head Over Heels, and this time we listen to the fascinating and characteristic "In the Gold Dust Rush," another song displaying Elizabeth Fraser's beautiful and unique vocals, not to mention some ace drumming and that light/dark tension. This song is very special to me-- it was the first Cocteau Twins song I ever heard. I was 15, a freshman in high school, and became aware of the band's aesthetic through seeing stickers on Trapper Keepers, cassettes peeking out of lockers occupied by the poufy-haired kids whose taste I admired.... and there was an import section in my local record shop, and I had seen these colorful, graphically intricate and just...foreign looking Cocteau Twins album covers. So I marched down to the mall and chose the most mysterious-looking one I could find. I bought it blind. In those days, 4AD made their vinyl albums with an abstract black and white photo label on Side One of the record, and the track listing for both sides on Side Two, but labeled "This Side" and "Over." More delicious obscurity. So I mistakenly thought this track was the first song on the album. I don't know when I figured it out, I got hung up on this side completely at first. I think it was hearing When Mama Was Moth and going, oh ok, this is clearly meant to open the album. That's one thing I have loved from the beginning of Cocteau Twins, every song on an album in its place, a beginning and an end, each album like a tiered jewel box.

The guitars on this song always sounded familiar to me, like it was sampled but it wasn't from what I gather. Love her vocals on this one, they are clear and powerful. I also agree with your take on their music having a slice of light and dark tension. Great reaction Matt!
