So if I seem harsh toward the end of the track, withhold any scorn temporarily; I react to "Clean" after this and take a wider view on the ending. Cheers.

I need to delve back to your other Depeche reactions, since I’m late to the show. Violator is an incredible album.

A lovely little jewel. The song definitely receives some criticism from fans after Wilder rightly described it as the "weakest" (or least great) song on the album. Not all of the criticism is warranted, as it is a timeless piece of music. The pitch bending "alien" sound heard throughout is a manipulated sound of a falsetto vocal also used in the M8 of "I Want You Now" on the previous album. A pad in the verses is likely using a Synclavier sound repurposed from "Black Celebration"; a kalimba-like sound heard starting from verse two is repurposed from a similar sound used in "Stripped": a plucked sound famously used throughout "Never Let Me Down Again", "Strangelove", the lead melody of the Spanish Taster mix of "To Have and To Hold", etc. is layered with the piano during the chorus sections. A manipulated soft pad likely derived from an Emulator III factory woodwind is used throughout (and was also used for the Pump Mix and live arrangements of "Personal Jesus", "World In My Eyes", etc). The ambience in the outro is a sample derived from the Eraserhead film pitched down and playing both in reverse and forwards. The songs of Violator (and Music for the Masses especially) are perhaps best heard in one sitting from start to finish, as the interludes do add to the music.

I like this but for my money it was only from Violator onward that DM became consistently album worthy for me. There are literally about 6 songs prior to this album that I would actually choose to listen to. I appreciate that others may disagree but I find the albums prior to this overly laden with songs that I find (sonically) too happy and for my tastes very 'of their time' (production wise) and not in a particularly good way.

The Depeche Mode fan in me will thank you for not using the D-word ("dated," obviously). But cheers, always love to hear your opinions, Philip!

@@mattsnider2667 Would never be so rude as to demean your childhood foray into music. 🙂Synth pop by it's very nature is always going to be heavily linked to a time period by the synths, sequencers and samples used. 1978-1981 especially, contains a lot of music (from bands that I enjoy) that I just don't revisit, as it doesn't appeal to me now. The one exception to that for me, is Duran's debut album. I think that the late Colin Thurston did a marvellous job of producing that album in such a way that it hasn't aged as poorly as other work from the same period. That coupled with having both synths and guitar in equal measure has allowed the songs to 'age' more gracefully.
