This is a good example of the poppier Depeche Mode. They also do music that is darker and more introspective. Because of this they have a following that isn't always easy to pigeon hole. they can count dance music and rock fans amongst their fans. Never let me Down Again is another famous song of their but with a darker theme of addiction.

The only thing is this song while popular is one of three songs most of the reactions are done on. This, Policy of Truth, and Personal Jesus. Kinda gets old especially when DM is more than just that time in their evolution. Her doing a Shake the Disease or Everything Counts reaction would be even cooler.

One of the sonic innovations of 80s music was "gated reverb" applied to the drums. Basically the sound is heavily compressed while having heavy reverb applied to it resulting in that familiar sharp, but kind of echoey eighties synthpop drum sound.

Depeche Mode consistently has an element of the melancholy - sometimes more, sometimes less, but it is always there. In this song, the words that "can only do harm" aren't just breaking a mood, but a reflection of the many harsh criticisms of the band and its members - many (if not most) unjustified. Like a number of bands from the late 80s on, they derive a good part of their inspiration from their pain: some express hope beyond the pain (like Freddy Mercury), some express edge-of-the-knife rawness and anger at the cause of the pain, a few take pleasure in the pain (NIN's "Closer"), some just search for catharsis (The Cranberries "Zombie" or Steven Wilson's "Routine" - *highly* recommended with the video - literally brings me to tears every time!) - and some, like Depeche Mode, with a kind of fatalism that feels like it has cried itself out, but stops short of apathy. I highly recommend their underrated second album "A Broken Frame" - it is a bit darker than this, and a bit less orchestral in its electronic instrumentation: opinions will always differ, of course - and I won't invalidate anyone else's - but I find it their creative peak! Prior to Depeche Mode, though, came a German band called Kraftwerk ("Power Station") - they were one of the pioneers of electronic pop music (there had been neoclassical works earlier) - on their first few electronic albums they had to build much of their equipment themselves! From your classical background - the song "Autobahn" might be a good place to start: it is long, at almost 23 minutes, but is a wonderful musical painting of a journey down the autobahn! For a more normal-length song, "Die Mensch-Maschine" (or the English version, "The Man-Machine") or ""Die Roboter" (English version retitled "The Robots") are fun explorations of the relationship between mankind and the technology we create to imitate ourselves!

It's a tribute to their popularity, or ability to write hits, that while many people did dance to this music, just as many listened to it by themselves, on headphones. It has a driving beat but it's also very atmospheric. Beyond that, they, and many others making music like this, paid a lot of attention to their lyrics. People in dance clubs weren't generally concerned with the words. Depeche Mode is very much in the tradition of the English New Wave. As this is from the early 90s it's both the height of the development of that sound and also near the end of that sound. Hair Metal was on the way out around this time and New Wave followed it, both supplanted in the pop charts by grunge, rap and then, later in the 90s, pop punk. For that reason, in our collective memory, this is 80s music. It gets lumped in with Tears for Fears, New Order, Duran Duran, and so on.

One of the best pop songs of all time. Ear worms are infinite with this piece from the guitar riff to the synth lines and his bass-baritone vocals. Classic from 1990. I was 15 when this came out and was a refreshing song for a kid sick of 80's sugary pop and then grunge broke and everything changed. The Dave grew his hair, covered himself in ink, found heroin and rocked it out with SOFAD. Another great album.

I have always found that Depeche Mode’s music was good to listen to while working alone. The sound has a repetitive rhythmic flow that helps relieve stress and does not compete with ones thoughts. It’s like a soundtrack in the background that helps keep productivity on an even pace. I also have listened to Tangerine Dream while working. This genre of music is not just good for dancing too.

It is a song that was covered by other artists very often, so it's easy to hear how it sounds in different styles. I'd recommend the version done by Tori Amos, a beautiful and haunting interpretation of the song, quiet and minimalistic with only voice, piano and some background synth pads and vocals.

DM has been my favorite band since I was 15, and I can say that most of their music requires more than one listen to fully appreciate - heck, I'm STILL noticing elements and re-interpretations of lyrics after hearing the songs hundreds (or thousands) of times! They are so unique - live, they've become a rock show, their crowds jumping, dancing, and singing their introspective and often melancholy lyrics - such a strange, beautiful balance! Though very popular, I wouldn't have started Amy with ETS. I wouldn't imagine a classical musician would see too much to appreciate here. I would go with STRIPPED (1986) next, as it is NOT dance music, but builds and builds... uses lots of samples and found sounds. Conveys emotion so well with a strong message that is still in the same lyrical vein as ETS (getting away from society's influence, just focus on the relationship without pretext).

Synthesizers are fantastic at creating atmospheric elements, creating fast tempos, without sounds becoming cluttered and crashing together. Depeche Mode are famed for using synths, drum machines and vocals in a very distinctively dissonance way. Queen loved layering instrumentation and vocals in a very flamboyant manner, much like perhaps Elton John or Suoertramp.

NLMDA could be good, but I would offer Stripped instead... as I think it would be good for Amy to be introduced to the "found sound" (sampling) side of electronic music, and how these elements and synthetic sounds can still build real emotion and musical tension. I think she demonstrated some bias here in this first listen to ETS for "real musicians", as though electronic music can only be for the dance floor. Exactly the same bias as DM's early era critics had!

Got to love these definitions. Depeche Mode: "Electronic music band" like: Mozart: "A composer for things made of wood", ufff... But seriously, DM is a very fine band, whether it shows in "Enjoy The Silence" at first listening or no. By nature, this sampling of all bands is difficult for Amy and I certainly sympathize with her a lot. Brushing over King Crimson, Yes, Genesis (early) or Radiohead did hurt but I can understand. Keep listening Amy! Our hearts are with you.

There were earlier exponents of synthesisers: Tangerine Dream take you on a journey rather than invite you to dance; Kraftwerk (essential - some of their tunes are long format but you could pick something like The Model) also take you on a journey sometimes; Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangellis also long-form. I presume you are aware of 'Switched on Bach' by Wendy Carlos, one of the earliest Moog pioneers. Then for disco beats there is the fabulous contribution by Georgio Moroder to Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love' (1976). Contemporary with Depech Mode are New Order: their 'Blue Monday' is outstanding. More spacey and dystopian is the classic by Tubeway Army (Gary Numan) 'Are Friends Electric', which has been sampled by more recent acts. 🙂

If we're going into this genre, New Order must be on the list soon.

This reminds me of an old SNL skit where the news covers the assassination of Buckwheat. The anchorman calls for a moment of silence during which you hear “this moment of silence is brought to you by liberty life insurance” 😏

Completely essential to this journey would be "I Feel Love" Donna Summer. And "Giorgio by Moroder" Daft Punk, to tell the story.

Many thanks for reviewing this song. I think it's not only good for dancing, but for sitting with a friend and just enjoying the silence together, which is a special experience that can't be shared with most people... Congratulations for the reviews and keep going ❤ BTW, not sure whether you reviewed Personal Jesus from the same band. I think it has different meanings, not only the religious obvious one 😉

This is a classic heroin song - that's the substance behind the lyrics. "All I ever wanted, all I ever needed, is here in my arms". The silence they're enjoying is the void on the nod.

I think that any other band will miss the unique feeling that Depeche Mode have, with their music. Unique musical approach, made them one of the most interesting artists of the 80’s and 90’s era. Their career is one of the most interesting, and their live performances are one of best, I personally had chance to watch them twice live, and it is amazing how electronic band can be so good in performing live music. Their frontman and singer Dave Gahan had very hard time for all this years, and I am not talking only about his struggle with his inner demons and drug addictions, I am talking about position of someone who manages to bring in live performances such a unique spectrum of feelings and to holds the attention of audience all the time, with background music many people consider too artificial, considering that many people do not have emotional attachment towards electronic music that sounds like something created for dance floors or elevators. But when you left yourself in to that perfect blend of his singing expression and music, with help of second vocal by Gore Martin a main author and multi instrumentalist, you just dive in and stopped doubting, you let yourself in journey like no other. You just enjoy with no words to spoil it, like they call in this song to just enjoy the silence sometimes. You are on the beginning of wonderful musical journey with Depeche Mode, Amy, enjoy it!

The Violator album is probably considered their greatest. Lots of great songs. Other good songs of theirs that is not that dancy is Stripped, waiting for the Night (on this same album) and Question of Lust (sung by Martin Gore).

Been waiting for you to tackle a song from this iconic electronic band. Glad you did. Enjoy the silence belongs to the more commercial and dance-friendly produced by this group. Another side of their music is significantly darker and deeper - and does not fit on the radio or dance floor. Although Enjoy the silence is danceable, I would not place this group as an electronic dance band, but rather as a gothic synthpop rock band. This band was often called the world's greatest band not played on the radio. This song too was first composed as a rather dark ballad by the group's primary songwriter, Martin L Gore. But the low-key ballad on the demo was transformed in the studio work into a more danceable pop song. Martin was initially not happy with how his rather gloomy ballad was transformed into an uptempo song, but he eventually relented, and the song became a commercial hit.

As an electronic music maker I absolutely love this song, however I never thought of this as electronic. It is though, just not the same instruments I'm thinking of.

I love DM and first saw them live in 1988 Music for the Masses tour and have seen them live twice since then. That being said, Enjoy the Silence would not even make my top 20 list of my favorite DM songs.

Thinking about who I would want to hear cover this song, and all I can think is Placebo. Sounds so perfect, I wonder if they already did. . .
