It's often assumed this is about Johnny and either his work with other musicians or his wife but I'm not so sure - being the last song on their last album released when we already knew they had split it seems the likely story. However, it sounds more like someone saying to another I can't give you the time and attention you want from me - my ambitions are what is most important to me right now, things (like relationships) come and go and maybe in the future?. It may well be about his close friend Linder, his graveyard poetry companion in the Cemetry Gates song, whose band Ludus never really took off. Morrissey wrote sleeve notes for an album of theirs that ended with the same lines as this song. Also he was a notoriously fickle friend, dropping people like flies if they said anything about him or spoke of their friendship. It's a bittersweet song, rather melancholy with that lonely harmonica coming in at the end.

Johnny Marr worked a lot at that time with other musicians and this song can be dedicated to him

Reflecting on Electronic, on that playlist I had Peter Hook in Monoco song Happy Jack. You might like it. Very good song about loved and lost.

Aah, the final track on the final record. Such a sweet song, very Smiths. A fine send off. Hope you enjoyed trawling through these albums. Lovely to re hear it through you. Can’t quite believe little 14/15 year old me grew up with these songs. Always made me laugh when people said they were miserable, I always found the humour in the band. But, that music, what a joy.
